There are\u00a0new Ultimes on the way<\/strong>\u00a0for Sodebo, Macif and Banque Populaire,\u00a0Vend\u00e9e Globe projects<\/a>\u00a0are multiplying like rabbits (there are 48 active projects according to SAEM Vend\u00e9e), there is\u00a0 the ongoing success of the\u00a0Class40<\/a>\u00a0plus the bourgeoning enthusiasm for the\u00a0Mini circuit<\/a>. The success for French ocean racing is gratifying and well deserved, bringing employment and investment but right now\u00a0there are logistics and space issues<\/strong>, especially in Southern Brittany – Lorient, La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer, Port-la-For\u00eat and Concarneau. Tip & Shaft takes a tour round to evaluate the extent of the problem that so many sailing regions would love to have…<\/em><\/p>\n

“You could all it\u00a0a housing crisis<\/strong>….” says Brieuc Morin the Director of\u00a0Sellor<\/a>, the company that manages the marinas of the\u00a0Lorient Agglomeration<\/a>. He is juggling with a shortage of space at the Lorient la Base hub which specializes in top end ocean racing race boats. There are\u00a0three Ultime teams there<\/strong>\u00a0– Banque Populaire, Gitana Team and now Sodebo, whose giant hangar is rising fast from the foundations as we write.\u00a0There are\u00a0a dozen Imocas<\/strong>\u00a0destined for the next\u00a0Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/a>(J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou, Sam Davies, Isabelle Joschke, Thomas Ruyant , Maxime Sorel, Giancarlo Pedote, St\u00e9phane Le Diraison, Kojiro Shiraishi, Pip Hare), probably\u00a0forty Figaros<\/strong>\u00a0(2 and 3),\u00a020 to 30 Class40s<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0a raft of Minis<\/strong>\u00a0which are all preparing for the\u00a02019 Mini-Transat<\/a>. All are based on the docks and pontoons of Lorient and the management of space and berths is becoming increasingly complicated.<\/p>\n

An established skipper but a newcomer to the Imoca class,\u00a0Maxime Sorel\u00a0says he is even worried about finding a space in Lorient for his IMOCA 60-footer V & B which is currently in build at Kairos, in Concarneau, “With all the Vendee \/ Volvo projects\u00a0we were not even really sure of having a place at La Base<\/strong>\u00a0(Lorient). I hope that having been in Lorient for a few years now and being part of the\u00a0Lorient Grand Large<\/a>\u00a0training group will count for a lot. Surely they will make sure we can stay. ”\u00a0 But when it comes to who gets what, one of the main influencing factors is economic: “The priority is employment<\/strong>, the economic impact of projects.” Brieuc Morin advises, “We know for example that\u00a0a Ultime needs at least 20 people and benefits skilled local people<\/strong>. But we also try to help people who have been here for a long time. For example I can’t see us telling someone like\u00a0Thomas Ruyant<\/a>, who has been here for years, that he has to leave to make way for new incoming teams.”<\/p>\n

It seems like Ruyant should be OK to hold a place on the pontoon but as for a hangar and for offices,\u00a0he has had to turn to the private sector<\/strong>\u00a0and rent from the Ocean Development company of Franck David. Team manager of Ruyant’s project,\u00a0Marcus Hutchinson<\/a>\u00a0explains “There was no more room anywhere, so we had no other choice.” “The pressure is everywhere<\/strong>.” affirms Morin,\u00a0Director of Marinas Group Sellor, “Right now it is very difficult to guarantee an IMOCA project a place afloat and a place on the land as well. It is 100% full. I think there are just two developments coming on line, the hangars currently being built by Tara and Lyophilis\u00e9.fr and they will rent out part of them. ”<\/p>\n

One part of these hangars is to be taken by a big sailmaker – rumoured to be\u00a0Incidences Sails<\/a>\u00a0– who have just announced their\u00a0own race trainning team initiative and a Superyacht facility<\/a>\u00a0in Lorient to be on stream in Lorient before the end of 2019. Meantime\u00a0North Sails<\/a>\u00a0had planned to set up their research and development centre in the of Groupama Team France building before\u00a0it was destroyed in a fire in June<\/strong>. And\u00a0many suppliers<\/a>\u00a0(electronics, deck hardware, software) are wanting space as per the original intention to have La Base as a centre of excellence for such top end companies, but now they are struggling to find space.<\/p>\n

A tenant since 2006,\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou<\/a>\u00a0explains: “When I settled here way back at the time of (his 2008 IMOCA) Delta Dore, we were tossing up between Port-la-For\u00eat and Lorient. We chose Lorient because we already sensed what would become of\u00a0La Base as a whole. We had the opportunity to own our building. And of course\u00a0the body of water here is also perfect<\/strong>: you can go sailing almost all the time, with the opportunity to sail inshore in flat water protected by Groix Island or go offshore easily to find swell “.<\/p>\n

The Agglomeration of Lorient launched in January\u00a0an extension project<\/strong>\u00a0to serve the growing demand,\u00a0showing that Lorient fully intends to assert itself as the leading centre for ocean racing in Brittany.\u00a0However, it is not alone<\/strong>:\u00a0La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer<\/a>\u00a0is home to three Ultimes – Spindrift 2, Idec Sport and Actual –\u00a0which, when they are all there, take up a lot of space in the Lo\u00efc Caradec dock leaving little room in particular for Imocas, which are limited to two or three places due to their draught. “From 2020, we\u2019ll be setting up a committee to allot places, because\u00a0we are unable to receive as many boats as would like to come<\/strong>\u00a0and the port cannot be extended,\u201d said the Director, Marc de Ghellinck. Present in La Trinit\u00e9 for more than twenty years,\u00a0Marc Guillemot<\/strong>, who now has two Figaro 3s there, adds: “Before, you just had to turn up to get a berth, but today,\u00a0it\u2019s true that is rather worrying for the years ahead<\/strong>, as professional racing is a sector that is continuing to develop.”<\/p>\n

Further north,\u00a0Port-la-For\u00eat<\/a>, which according to Marcus Hutchinson, has a drawback for the Imocas “due to its lack of water,”\u00a0is also close to being full<\/strong>, with depending on the time of year, one or two places for the Ultimes and six to eight for the Imocas, which today are practically all reserved for Jean Le Cam, Romain Attanasio, S\u00e9bastien Simon, Kevin Escoffier and Charlie Dalin. The latter with his 60-foot Apivia, just like the Macif trimaran, will be crossing the bay in a year from now, as MerConcept,\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Gabart\u2019s company is moving in the spring of 2020 to a single base in Concarneau<\/strong>. What was the reason for that? “We wanted to bring all our people and boats together\u00a0in one place. We chose Concarneau, as there is room to handle boats with harbour-sides that are suitable and there was an area available for us. Fran\u00e7ois wanted to remain close to Port-la-For\u00eat and the Finist\u00e8re Course Au Large training centre\u201d explains\u00a0Thomas Normand<\/a>, managing director of MerConcept.<\/p>\n

Concarneau is also home to\u00a0Roland Jourdain<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Kairos company<\/a>. He says: “I often say that we\u2019re in Switzerland here: with Port-la-For\u00eat and Lorient, we can do things quite discreetly and all sorts of things are possible. There is fishing, boat-building, all the suppliers, us and soon, Macif.\u00a0It\u2019s not just one culture\u00a0<\/strong>and I believe that we shouldn\u2019t copy what the others do.” Will the arrival of MerConcept attract others? “Space remains limited<\/strong>. Several racers came to see me and we\u2019re studying the possibilities, but we\u2019re not doing any special advertising, because we don\u2019t want to give false hopes to any ocean racing teams”, concludes\u00a0” according to Xavier Rasseneur.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
