{"id":20596,"date":"2019-01-25T16:40:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-25T15:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tipandshaft.com\/?p=20596"},"modified":"2019-03-19T16:42:31","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T15:42:31","slug":"how-banque-populaire-decides-to-continue-its-sailing-sponsorship-until-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sailorz.com\/en\/figaro-en\/how-banque-populaire-decides-to-continue-its-sailing-sponsorship-until-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"How Banque Populaire decides to continue its sailing sponsorship until 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>From the fateful day, November 6th<sup>,\u00a0<\/sup>when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routedurhum.com\/en\/news\/527\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their Ultime Banque Populaire IX capsized<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routedurhum.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe<\/a>\u00a0it took just over one month, until December 12th\u00a0before the green light was given for an ambitious new three cornered project.\u00a0Such is the success story which links sailing and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voile.banquepopulaire.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Banque Populaire<\/a>\u00a0and which now sees the seemingly unwavering relationship extend past the 30 year anniversary\u00a0<strong>now into 2024<\/strong>. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voile.banquepopulaire.fr\/news\/banque-populaire-reaffirme-son-engagement-dans-la-voile-jusquen-2024-avec-un-programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new triple pronged programme<\/a>\u00a0encompasses the\u00a0<strong>building of a new Ultime for Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h<\/strong>, a commitment to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vendeeglobe.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/a>\u00a0with dynamic young female\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ClarisseSurLAtlantique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer<\/a>\u00a0on the former SMA, and two seasons on the\u00a0<strong>Figaro circuit for Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h<\/strong>\u00a0as the longstanding sailing Banking and Insurance giants commit to continue at least until 2024.\u00a0Tip &amp; Shaft takes a look at their decision to carry on\u2026<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A capsize in April off the Moroccan coast and then a second, during the early stages of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe when the starboard float was badly damaged meant\u00a0<strong>2018 was a very testing, black year for Banque Populaire<\/strong>. The eleventh edition of the four yearly solo Transatlantic classic from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe was a key event for the sponsor, and for the skipper Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h.\u00a0<strong>The Ultime trimaran was recovered but was in too poor a state to rebuild<\/strong>\u00a0or reinstate her.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the loss, reckoned to cost about \u20ac10m,\u00a0<strong>there was no question that Banque Populaire\u2019s sailing sponsorship would end<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>\u2018not even for half a second\u2019\u00a0<\/em>according to Christine Fabresse, general manager of local banking and the BPCE insurance division. \u201c<strong>There was an immediate mood of solidarity and support for Armel.<\/strong>\u201d she recalls, \u201cIt may sound amazing but that is the simple truth. We would not be turning our back on 30 years of such a partnership because if this. It is too long and too rich a story to stop just like that.\u00a0<strong>Our initial priority was to wait for Armel&#8217;s own decision<\/strong>. We did not know what he would decide based on what he felt in his own mind and taking account of what his family thought, if he would want to go again and if so when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h himself says his own decision was made quite quickly. \u201cBecause it was not a straightforward capsize but there was a breakage which lead directly to the capsize then<strong>\u00a0it in no way calls into question the way I was sailing<\/strong>\u00a0or even that maybe multihull sailing like this was not for me. So when the sponsors asked, as soon as I had talked to my team, we straight away discussed what I wanted.\u00a0<strong>And that was going back to the Ultime<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The top priority now is\u00a0<strong>the construction of a new Ultime<\/strong>\u00a0under the supervision of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdk-technologies.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDK Technologies<\/a>\u00a0(the floats will be made at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.multiplast.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Multiplast<\/a>). The build will take about 18 months and so is not expected until\u00a0<strong>late in 2020<\/strong>. Because that would otherwise have meant a lot of time away from sailing for Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h, the second initiative was proposed by the skipper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With Ronan [Lucas, director Team Banque Populaire, Ed],\u00a0<strong>we spoke about Vend\u00e9e Globe for me, but very quickly that question was put aside<\/strong>. Firstly because I had said when I won\u00a0 that I did not want to do it again. And if I did go back on that and do it again I would have only gone out to win and that would have meant a new boat and it is already almost too late for that, and would have cost more money. Personally I<strong>\u00a0wanted to go sailing in the Figaro<\/strong>. With the Figaro 3 and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/presse.rivacom.fr\/en\/newsletter\/6151\/the-solitaire-urgo-le-figaro-heads-to-ireland-for-50th-anniversary-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50th\u00a0edition of La Solitaire<\/a>\u00a0and the AG2R in 2020, this allows me to stay sharp for the next two years on a very competitive circuit.\u201d\u00a0 Armel explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voile.banquepopulaire.fr\/portraits\/ronan-lucas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ronan Lucas<\/a>\u00a0did however propose, among other option, a Vend\u00e9e Globe project to BPCE&#8217;s management: &#8220;<strong>We presented all the options<\/strong>\u00a0that there are in French sailing: from the Tour de France \u00e0 la Voile to Multi 50s and so on. But the last two Vend\u00e9e Globes with Banque Populaire have gone so well it was natural, after a first round evaluation, that\u00a0<strong>a Vend\u00e9e Globe project emerged alongside the Ultime and the Figaro<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christine Fabresse adds:&#8221; This triple project has emerged because it allows us to carry on with our\u00a0 favorite skipper, to continue to work in field encompassing innovation, a theme that is important to us, and to have a projects which offer an ongoing narrative and transmission.&#8221;\u00a0<strong>Banque Populaire were quickly on board with Lucas\u2019 idea to bring on Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer<\/strong>, the dynamic 29 year old who came late to sailing but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2017.minitransat.fr\/en\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took second in the 2017 in the Mini-Transat<\/a>, as a Vend\u00e9e Globe potential.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We presented five or six names, but very quickly,\u00a0<strong>Clarisse rose to the top of the thinking<\/strong>\u00a0for several reasons: her youth, her dynamism, her proven entrepreneurial spirit and, we must say, her communication is great. And she can perform as she showed on her Mini-Transat. She maybe seemed to come from nowhere but\u00a0<strong>she showed she knew how to build her project to be successful<\/strong>. Everything about her was about communication, performance and youth&#8221;, says Ronan Lucas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer admits she hesitated<\/strong>\u00a0before committing: &#8220;We first discussed it at the end of November. I met with Ronan in a little, hidden office. He wanted to probe me about the project. I was unable to give him a firm answer. I did not sleep much after that and I took a full week to get back to him and say I wanted to take on this huge challenge. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lucas meantime secured the charter of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routedurhum.com\/en\/skipper\/105\/paul-meilhat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the former Paul Meilhat&#8217;s\u00a0SMA<\/a>, as one of several parties who were negotiating with Michel Desjoyeaux for the boar. The choice of boat is underpinned by budgetary considerations but also fits with the skipper\u2019s experience. According to Lucas this triple project is done at a \u2018normal budget\u2019 for Banque Populaire, namely an\u00a0<strong>all inclusive annual total for all sailing activities of 7 million euros<\/strong>\u00a0(taxes included).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For her first Vend\u00e9e Globe, we did not necessarily want to put pressure on Clarisse with an ultra-competitive foiling boat, Ronan Lucas adds. She will have plenty of time to come back again with an ambition to win. And Paul Meilhat proved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routedurhum.com\/en\/news\/1095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by winning the Route du Rhum<\/a>\u00a0that the VPLP-Verdier design which won the 2012 Vend\u00e9e Globe (as Macif) is a reliable machine that can get on to the IMOCA podiums&#8221;.\u00a0Like the next Transat Jacques-Vabre, on which Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer will be accompanied by an Le Cl\u00e9ac&#8217;h. He may have a role and mentor and coach during 2019 but Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h warns, &#8220;<strong>I am not going to be there just to be a sailing instructor<\/strong>. The objective on the Jacques-Vabre will be to perform to achieve the bestresult we can get for the weapons we will have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two co-skippers of the IMOCA to be renamed Banque Populaire X, will begin their preparation in late July, before taking on the Fastnet and the Azimut Challenge.\u00a0<strong>They will be opponents on the Figaro circuit\u00a0<\/strong>and in particular on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/presse.rivacom.fr\/en\/newsletter\/6151\/the-solitaire-urgo-le-figaro-heads-to-ireland-for-50th-anniversary-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Solitaire Urgo Le Figaro<\/a>\u00a0which Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer will race for the first time, with her partner Everial, who she sails with until the end of June.
