It is one of the unofficial rankings of the\u00a0Solitaire Urgo Le Figaro<\/a>, but it is highly prized and keenly observed and there is a commercial benefit.\u00a0Whose sails are working, whose sails are winning?\u00a0<\/strong>This year one brand has dominated the 50th edition of the summer classic that has held us all in suspense through this month of June:\u00a0Incidence<\/a>.The Brest-La Rochelle based sailmakers owned\u00a0the entire podium<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0– Yoann Richomme, Gildas Mahe, Anthony Marchand. But they also equipped\u00a0the first two rookies<\/strong>\u00a0– Benjamin Schwartz and Tom Laperche – as well as\u00a0three of the four stage winners<\/strong>. It\u2019s an amazing outcome for the sailmakers Incidence whose last wins were back in 2016 and 2014.<\/p>\n

For all involved in the Figaro circuit, the challenge of this 50th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary edition was vital:\u00a0“We knew that the arrival of Figaro 3 would reshuffle the cards and give an opportunity for newcomers to emerge,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains\u00a0Julien Gresset<\/strong>\u00a0who was in charge of the class at Incidence, \u201cFor us the challenge was to be in a position to really do well in this first year.<\/strong>\u00a0Because that is where the first market share is won.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The first problem is that the new one design arrives very late with an\u00a0extremely tight race schedule<\/strong>\u00a0before La Solitaire that starts at the end of May.
\n“We were allowed two sailing slots on the Figaro No. 1 in the autumn, one afternoon and then one day with our first set of prototype sails,”<\/em>\u00a0says Julien Gresset.\u00a0\u201cAfter that we had to wait for the boats draw at the Nautic in December in Paris. And\u00a0we had to \u201crecruit” a sailor<\/strong>\u00a0who was boat was among those to be delivered in January so we could accumulate as many sailing days as quickly as possible.<\/em>\u201d So a collaboration begins with\u00a0Fabien Delahaye<\/a>\u00a0who agreed to sail immediately he got his boat without putting his boat into the yard. Every day counts: the Sardinha Cup, first race of the season, starts at the end of March.<\/p>\n

At Incidence, the design of the new Figaro’s sails is shared between the duo:\u00a0Ronan Floc’h<\/strong><\/a>, based in Brest, and\u00a0Maxime Paul<\/strong>, based in La Rochelle. The two men have long years of 470 Olympic sailing in common as well as lot of experience in the Figaro 2. Floc\u2019h does the \u2018white\u2019 sails (mainsail, J2, J3), and Paul the flying sails (spinnaker, gennaker), which are produced on the spot, as close as possible to the designers.\u00a0“It’s tough on the logistics.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Recalls \u00a0Julien Gresset,\u00a0\u201cBut then they are with the sails from start to finish in their entirety.<\/em>” In cases of disagreement\u2026\u2026\u201dIt is the designer who has the most feeling on the subject that prevails”,<\/em>\u00a0says Ronan Floc’h.<\/p>\n

The prototypes were designed from the architects’ plans and modelling of the Figaro 3 by\u00a0Jean-Baptiste Boullet<\/a>.\u00a0“With these elements, we knew that the boat not as stiff as its predecessor, you will need to reef earlier, the mast, it is very stiff, it will be necessary to make sails not too deep and so on.\u201d<\/em>Summarizes Ronan Floc’h,\u00a0\u201cBut the big unknown for us is the foils<\/strong>. We realise that a 5 degrees change accelerates the boat and loads up the sails.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The first test sails confirm many things. The first set of the flat sails is a good base. But there are also doubts.\u00a0They have seven different drawings for the gennaker<\/strong>. But other sailors come on board too. The\u00a0Macif team<\/strong>\u00a0who work in particular on rig set up and settings, then on come the\u00a0Arthur Le Vaillant-Pascal Bidegorry<\/strong>\u00a0duo, whose speed is noticeable at the Sardinha Cup. “It’s the first time I’ve worked with Bide, he\u2019s impressive!”<\/em>\u00a0notes Ronan Floc’h.\u00a0Yoann Richomme,<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Gildas Mah\u00e9<\/strong>,\u00a0Michel Desjoyeaux, Eric Peron and Anthony Marchand<\/strong>\u00a0also bring their input. For all the rule is the same , the development ideas of the sailmakers are shared; those of the sailors belong to them. Each week the sails are returned to the loft floors after sailing and testing. Julien Gresset accumulates the information gained over the miles sailed:\u00a0“From the very beginning of the season,\u00a0it was important to always be on the pontoon<\/strong>, for everybody. It is the small details that make the difference”.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

At the end of the debriefing of the Solo Ma\u00eetre Coq the series design is frozen and goes into production. The time available to deliver is tight because there are\u00a0107 sails\u00a0<\/strong>to deliver for the Solitaire, less than 3 weeks later! And there are last-minute orders, like a J2 for J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou and for Yann Eli\u00e8s, who are with another sailmaker, in itself these are signs that that reputations in the new class are being forged.<\/p>\n

In total, between January and June,\u00a0Incidence produced some 210 sails for the Figaro 3<\/strong>\u00a0including the sails of the winners. “It was really intense and sometimes we were limited in terms of planning. But we learned a lot this year.\u201d Says Ronan Floc’h. \u201cWinning in this series is unique<\/strong>, the Figaro 3 has pulled everyone\u2019s level right up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
