With\u00a027,000 boats<\/strong>\u00a0produced over the course of\u00a0four decades<\/a>,\u00a0First<\/strong>\u00a0is a name that has now spanned several\u00a0generations of sailors and regattas<\/strong>. Starting with the legendary\u00a0First 30<\/strong>, a half tonner which was a design by Andr\u00e9 Mauric, the boat which gave its name to the First line, through the\u00a0First 50\u00a0<\/strong>designed by Philippe Briand, through the legendary\u00a0First Class 8<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>designed by Jean-Marie Finot and Jacques Fauroux, aboard which many racers originally cut their teeth, the race performance range of Beneteau is well known to all who are\u00a0passionate about sailboat racing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Busy with its developments elsewhere since the year 2010, the\u00a0world’s number 1 in yachting<\/a>\u00a0had kind of left the line to one side, that was before they decided a\u00a0relaunch<\/strong>\u00a0was due.\u00a0“We had a\u00a0jewel<\/strong>, a bit forsaken\u00a0for a while, one which had a very good image and awarneess”,\u00a0<\/em>summarizes\u00a0Luc Jo\u00ebssel<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>who is sailing performance product manager for the Vend\u00e9e based boatbuilding giant. “And on their part, our dealer network put pressure on us. They all had very good memories of the commercial success of the First series including the 31.7, 36.7 and 40.7″<\/em><\/p>\n

In the summer of 2018 the opportunity came to acquire\u00a0Seascape<\/a>, the line created by\u00a0Kristian Hajn\u0161ek<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Andra\u017e Mihelin<\/strong>. The two Slovenian entrepreneurs are former\u00a0Mini Class<\/a>\u00a0racers as is the architect of their boats who is of course a certain\u00a0Sam Manuard<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>Heavily influenced by their Mini 6.50 experiences, the three designed\u00a0four simple, fast, portable and accessible boats\u00a0<\/a>ranging between 14 and 27 feet.\u00a0“They are very well spec’d with\u00a0top-of-the-range<\/strong>\u00a0standing and running rigging, carbon poles, no\u00a0 backstays or sharp chines and so on”,\u00a0<\/em>appraises Jo\u00ebssel.<\/p>\n

Above all, they muster together a\u00a0wide community of racers<\/strong>\u00a0who enjoy meeting up at the many events throughout northern Europe. And that, for Beneteau, is a\u00a0key thing<\/strong>\u00a0:\u00a0“Today, our customers do not only buy a boat, but also into a\u00a0narrative<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0 an\u00a0experience<\/strong>“,\u00a0<\/em>explains\u00a0Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Pape<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>Beneteau’s Director of Communications\u00a0 who arrived a few months before the acquisition of Seascape.\u00a0“Now, we communicate as much about people\u00a0enjoying<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0using<\/strong>\u00a0the product.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Beneteau are not content to brand these Slovenian sportboats in their colours. Instead now a real one-design circuit for the\u00a0First 24<\/a>\u00a0was launched in 2019, comprising events in\u00a0Croatia, Germany, Denmark\u00a0<\/strong>and in\u00a0Italy<\/strong>.\u00a0In France, the\u00a0First Cup\u00a0<\/strong>was set up with three constituent events:\u00a0Spi Ouest-France, the\u00a0Grand Prix de l’Ecole navale<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Beneteau Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The goal is to develop a\u00a0committed community of passionate racer<\/strong>s who have real\u00a0sporting ambitions<\/strong>:\u00a0“We made the First 24 a\u00a0One Design<\/strong>, writing class rules”,\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>explains Luc Jo\u00ebssel.” And we have made a fleet of 15 boats available to our dealers along with trailers and shoreside assistance.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The dealers\u00a0enjoy<\/strong>\u00a0the game and benefit, many happy to be\u00a0back on the water<\/strong>, inviting customers, prospective boat buyers and even a few famous racers like\u00a0Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, Gaston Morvan or Luc Pillot,\u00a0<\/strong>Olympic champion as well as the winner of\u00a0the first First Cup\u00a0!\u00a0“We’ve always organized events for the owners<\/em>“, says Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Pape,\u00a0“But all around the First, we have found\u00a0a very tribal phenomenon<\/strong>, they are more passionate than the usual clients.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Now the First “tribe” will meet at the\u00a0Paris Nautic<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Sunday, December 8 at 12h to celebrate the first winner of the First Cup. See you on the 2020 programme!<\/p>\n
