Ten months before the start of the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/a>\u00a0and a very intense build up season which will open with\u00a0The Transat CIC<\/a>\u00a0(starts May 10) and rolls straight into the\u00a0New York-Vend\u00e9e\u00a0(June 16), almost all of the IMOCAs are fully engaged in their\u00a0winter refits<\/strong>. For some the job list is more comprehensive and may include\u00a0new foils<\/strong>, for others constrained by budgets it is more about maximising reliability and small incremental performance gains.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A few teams have decided to fit\u00a0new foils<\/strong>\u00a0for the Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u00a0Charal<\/strong>, as\u00a0announced several months ago<\/a>\u00a0by skipper\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou<\/strong>\u00a0are fitting a new set of Vend\u00e9e Globe specific foils so therefore\u00a0more orientated to downwind VMG<\/strong>. They are designed, like the first set, by\u00a0VPLP<\/a>\u00a0using new tools which come from the modelling package developed by Emirates Team New Zealand and now available on the open market. Nicolas Andrieu, in charge of performance at the Charal Sailing Team, says: “This tool has been very useful and we are fairly confident that this new design methodology can bring us\u00a0a step up in performance<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

At Ark\u00e9a Paprec where two foils failed in the fall –\u00a0the first<\/a>\u00a0just before the Jacques Vabre and\u00a0the second<\/a>\u00a0during the race, the construction of a new pair foils to Juan Kouyoumdjian plans starts at Lorima “from here\u00a0in fifteen days<\/strong>“, according to Vincent Riou who oversees\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Simon<\/strong>‘s project. “We had planned to make a V2 pair for the summer, so what has obviously changed is the timing. We are running up\u00a0a race against the clock<\/strong>\u00a0because these are parts that take a long time to produce, and the planned program is to do the two Transats”.\u00a0Do we know the reasons for the breakage of the first two? “It is still under review we are awaiting confirmation of what we think before we start definitive construction”, replies Riou the former skipper of PRB.<\/p>\n

A new pair of foils for\u00a0Thomas Ruyant<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Advens for Cybersecurity<\/strong>\u00a0is being built at\u00a0Persico<\/a>\u00a0to a design by Verdier studio under the direction of Antoine Koch from Thomas Ruyant Racing. “It was planned and budgeted<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 Ruyant told Tip & Shaft. \u201cBoth for the question of the project\u2019s viability in the event of breakage and for performance. Our first pair is great, but we will try to have more foils for solo racing and for the Vend\u00e9e”.<\/p>\n

Alex Thomson Racing<\/a>\u00a0team told us that it was going to “build\u00a0another set of foils before the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>” for Hugo Boss and the same is true for\u00a0Nicolas Troussel<\/strong>\u00a0on the new\u00a0Corum<\/strong>, expected to launch in early March. Meantime\u00a0Armel Tripon<\/strong>\u00a0will put\u00a0L’Occitane<\/strong>\u00a0in water on February 1st “with a pair of foils to start,\u00a0then potentially a second before the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>“.\u00a0Kojiro Shiraishi\u00a0<\/strong>(DMG Mori<\/strong>) has not planned to build new foils \u2018at the moment\u2019.\u00a0Charlie Dalin<\/strong>\u00a0is keeping tight lipped\u2026.. he did not want to communicate anything formally before\u00a0Apivia<\/strong>\u00a0comes back out the shed. But it is hard to see the skipper from Le Havre, given his goals on the Vend\u00e9e Globe, taking the risk of trying to do without a second set. He will want to be at least on terms with his competitors.<\/p>\n

Among the boats from previous generations, two skippers have also chosen to have new foils built<\/strong>: the first is\u00a0Boris Herrmann<\/strong>\u00a0which replaces the current appendages of\u00a0Malizia II-Yacht Club de Monaco<\/strong>\u00a0with new ones, currently built at\u00a0Multiplast<\/a>\u00a0from the moulds used for MACSF (another pair of foils will be produced later for The Ocean Race). “This is a compromise that seemed intelligent and not too risky for a Vend\u00e9e not too extreme but more efficient,” explains the German who works with Quentin Lucet at VPLP. Boris is not just updating the foils: “We also alter the bow to make a mini-scow<\/strong>, the objective being that it pushes less water and that it helps to\u00a0lift\u00a0the boat”. These major changes started in December at\u00a0Le Hub by OC Sport<\/a>\u2019s facility in Lorient. These changes are made possible thanks to the arrival of\u00a0a new partner<\/strong>\u00a0to be announced at the end of January or at the latest in February”.<\/p>\n

Last boat to be equipped with foils this winter is\u00a0Time for Oceans<\/strong>. Skipper\u00a0St\u00e9phane Le Diraison<\/strong>\u00a0explains: “In early 2019, I started with the idea of \u200b\u200bmaking more slender straight daggerboards, like Damien (Seguin), we realized that the operation was expensive. We started thinking about foils.\u00a0We then had the opportunity to buy some from Initiatives Coeur<\/strong>\u00a0with their wells, we grabbed it. We work with\u00a0Finot-Conq<\/a>, I also hired\u00a0Philippe Legros<\/strong>, who had worked with J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou on the fitting these foils to Ma\u00eetre CoQ 2016 [now\u00a0Initiatives Coeur]. ”<\/p>\n

Many other modifications are underway on the Finot 2007 plan: “We are updating the ballasts, we make new rudders which are much more modern and deeper, and\u00a0we completely redo the roof<\/strong>. The double steps downs from the cockpit is too wide and no longer suitable. For the roof and rudders\u00a0we shared the tools with Damien Seguin<\/strong>\u00a0[who therefore makes the same modifications on Apicil, editor’s note]. ” All these works have a cost, which the skipper figures at 500,000 euros (extra VAT), supported by some of his partners.<\/p>\n

Other skippers mentioned to Tip & Shaft that they had thought about the possibility of adding foils to their IMOCAs, but\u00a0they would rather with until after the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>. That is the case for\u00a0Fabrice Amedeo<\/strong>, who for a short time now has been working with the\u00a0Gitana Team<\/a>: “We got in contact with them, because we were looking for a shed. They weren\u2019t interested in just providing a home for the boat, but were keen however to work with us, allowing their teams to accompany us. I found that an interesting idea, as I was already thinking about the 2024 Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u00a0The idea is to develop the boat and fit her foils, when she gets back from this Vend\u00e9e<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Louis Burton<\/strong>\u00a0and BE Racing, they are not planning on carrying out any major work this winter, but will come to a decision in the first quarter about what to do after the solo round the world race, as the skipper of\u00a0Bureau Vall\u00e9e\u00a0<\/strong>confirmed: “We\u2019re looking at\u00a0lots of ideas, such as keeping the boat, building a new one, buying one from the 2020 generation. If we keep this one, we\u2019ll wait and see whether the class allows horizontal\u00a0foils on the rudders. If that happens, we could design foils that work with them and we\u2019d be ready for 2022.”<\/p>\n

Manu Cousin<\/strong>\u00a0is thinking along the same lines for\u00a0Groupe S\u00e9tin<\/strong>: “We thought about fitting foils, but I think that will be on our next boat, as I am still fairly new to the IMOCA class. My sponsor and I prefer to set off with a boat that\u00a0we know well to move up to another boat next time<\/strong>, which performs better and is equipped with foils.”<\/p>\n

As for the other refits going on with ten months to go to the start, most teams are working on two aspects:\u00a0ensuring reliability and ease of handling<\/strong>. It was the question of reliability that motivated the\u00a0Initiatives C\u0153ur<\/strong>\u00a0team to fit\u00a0a new mast\u00a0<\/strong>on\u00a0Sam Davies<\/strong>\u2019s IMOCA: “The current mast has already done two Vend\u00e9e races, and even if the masts are given a complete check-up using ultrasound every year, we are still never really sure about how composite materials suffer fatigue,” explained the team-manager David Sineau.<\/p>\n

As for ease of handling,\u00a0some skippers are focusing on stacking<\/strong>, such as\u00a0Arnaud Boissi\u00e8res<\/strong>, who has fitted \u201ca sort of sliding system aft to make stacking easier\u201d on\u00a0La Mie C\u00e2line-Artisans Artipole<\/strong>.\u00a0Maxime Sorel<\/strong>\u00a0has planned to improve the layout inside\u00a0V&B Mayenne<\/strong>: “There is a very large nav desk with a double seat and that takes up a lot of room, so we\u2019re looking at that,” the skipper from Saint Malo told us.<\/p>\n

Lots of teams have worked hard on protecting the skipper, with\u00a0a protective cover installed on 4myplanet<\/strong>\u00a0(Alexia Barrier<\/strong>),\u00a0a fixed protection on Initiatives C\u0153ur<\/strong>, while\u00a0several cockpits will be completely closed<\/strong>\u00a0up with composite materials and\/or cloth by the spring. That is the case in particular for Newrest Art & Fen\u00eatres, Malizia and Bureau Vall\u00e9e.<\/p>\n
