The\u00a0Figaro season<\/a>\u00a0will kick off on 13th\u00a0March with the\u00a0Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ<\/strong>, which comes before the big event\u00a0of the season,\u00a0the\u00a0Transat AG2R La Mondiale<\/a>. Both these events are part of the French\u00a0elite offshore racing championship along with the\u00a0Le Havre All Mer Cup<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Solitaire<\/a>.\u00a0Changes to the\u00a0Figaro 3,\u00a0the new\u00a0programme\u00a0and line-up…\u00a0Tip & Shaft\u00a0looks at the key features for 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n

Figaro 3:\u00a0being tested in the\u00a0Transat AG2R La Mondiale<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a first year in which, according to\u00a0Yvon Breton<\/strong>, president\u00a0of the\u00a0Figaro B\u00e9n\u00e9teau\u00a0class<\/a>,\u00a0the new\u00a0Figaro 3\u00a0“went through a hell of a lot,”\u00a0the second season looks calmer in theory.\u00a0“Last year,\u00a0everyone was just discovering the boat and there were a lot of technical problems. Now we’re moving into the second season with boats that are operational from their launch and the knowledge acquired last year should enable everyone\u00a0to focus on more specific elements<\/strong>, such as the sails,” explained\u00a0Fabien Delahaye<\/strong>, who is back in the circuit again this year.<\/p>\n

So, are all the teething problems over?\u00a0“Everything to do with the mast is behind us;\u00a0as\u00a0for the leaks around the foil housing, it is not yet over<\/strong>,\u00a0but if you are careful during the preparation phase, there should be no need to worry,”\u00a0responded\u00a0Anthony Marchand<\/strong>\u00a0who is setting off again.\u00a0In a transatlantic race,\u00a0we may well discover other problems<\/strong>:\u00a0some small elements have tended to be left to one side to save money. That is only normal, as we wanted an affordable\u00a0foiler,\u00a0but at some point we are going to have to deal with them.”<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Transat AG2R La Mondiale<\/a>\u00a0is going to be another new test for the\u00a0Figaro 3,\u00a0the rules for which were modified during the winter with in particular the obligation\u00a0for all the boats to be fitted\u00a0with\u00a0non-submersible\u00a0features<\/strong>\u00a0(NF Habitat sank before the\u00a0Tour de Bretagne\u00a0last September).\u00a0“We had to adapt to requirements from insurers to continue to be insured,” explained\u00a0Fabien Delahaye.\u00a0Christian Ponthieu<\/a>,\u00a0the new technical coordinator for the class, explains: “There will be foam in the forward section and inflatable sausage shaped elements on each side of the engine aft. Prototypes\u00a0are just about to appear and production\u00a0will start once they have been approved, before giving priority to equipping the boats that are going to do the\u00a0AG2R.”<\/p>\n

While the\u00a0Figaro 3\u00a0still has to overcome some of its teething problems,\u00a0the boat is nevertheless\u00a0appreciated by most of the competitors<\/strong>.\u00a0“The boat is more\u00a0‘virile’ than the\u00a0Figaro 2<\/strong>\u00a0which had become a bit like a boat for a Sunday driver. We stayed under big spinnaker and full mainsail up to 35 knots of wind;\u00a0now in the same conditions,\u00a0you quickly replace the\u00a0spinnaker by a\u00a0gennaker. You take in a reef or two and we are into classic manoeuvres,”\u00a0confirmed\u00a0Anthony Marchand.\u00a0For\u00a0Christian Le Pape,\u00a0who is head of the\u00a0Finist\u00e8re\u00a0offshore training centre in\u00a0Port-la-For\u00eat<\/a>,\u00a0“The boat is much livelier and requires care and precision from the skipper in a race like the\u00a0AG2R,\u00a0so no one will get any rest. It will take commitment with a lot of attention to angles, which we don’t yet know that well.”<\/p>\n

Programme:\u00a0a successful\u00a0AG2R,\u00a0while some unknowns\u00a0concerning\u00a0the\u00a0Solitaire<\/strong><\/p>\n

The French elite offshore racing championship will include\u00a0four events this year<\/strong>:\u00a0the\u00a0Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ,\u00a0theTransat AG2R La Mondiale,\u00a0the\u00a0Le Havre All Mer Cup\u00a0and the\u00a0Solitaire du Figaro.\u00a0Three other races outside of the championship are in the\u00a0programme:\u00a0the\u00a0Solo Guy Cotten\u00a0in\u00a0Concarneau,\u00a0the Spi Ouest-France\u00a0and the\u00a0Drheam Cup\u00a0which offers\u00a0Figaro\u00a0racers an opportunity for a dress rehearsal a month before the\u00a0Solitaire.<\/p>\n

The two main events of the seasons will be the\u00a0Transat AG2R La Mondiale\u00a0and the\u00a0Solitaire du Figaro<\/strong>,\u00a0both\u00a0organised by\u00a0OC Sport Pen Duick<\/a>.\u00a0The first looks like being a success in terms of the number taking part, which should be around\u00a025%\u00a0higher than in\u00a02018 (19 boats).\u00a0“So far we have 21 boats<\/strong>\u00a0registered with a few extra projects, which lack a little funding,”\u00a0explained\u00a0Marine Derrien<\/a>,\u00a0head of\u00a0operations\u00a0at\u00a0OC Sport Pen Duick.\u00a0“In all,\u00a0we are expecting around\u00a025 pairs,\u00a0including five or six mixed<\/strong>,\u00a0which we wanted to be a key feature for this race.\u00a0The arrival of the new boat has helped increase the numbers. This will be the first transatlantic race for the\u00a0Figaro 3,\u00a0but there is\u00a0also the\u00a0future\u00a0Olympic mixed double event in the Paris Olympics in\u00a02024<\/strong>.\u00a0For example,\u00a0among those registered,\u00a0there is an American pairing, who have their eyes firmly on that event.”<\/p>\n

Many of the big names will be present<\/strong>\u00a0including Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac’h (with\u00a0Erwan Le Roux),\u00a0Anthony Marchand\/Alexis Loison\u00a0and\u00a0Xavier Macaire\/Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re,\u00a0and not forgetting\u00a0Yann Eli\u00e8s, Gildas Mah\u00e9, Pierre Leboucher, Fabien Delahaye (whose co-skippers\u00a0are to be announced shortly).\u00a0The\u00a0young generation<\/strong>\u00a0will be represented by\u00a0Martin Le Pape, Sam Goodchild, Benjamin Schwartz,\u00a0the duo formed byTanguy Le Turquais\/Julien Villion,\u00a0the Macif\u00a0skippers (Pierre Quiroga\/Erwan Le Draoulec)\u00a0and those from\u00a0Bretagne CMB (Lo\u00efs Berrehar\/Tom Laperche),\u00a0while there will also be\u00a0some new names<\/strong>: Am\u00e9lie Grassi\/Ambrogio Beccaria, Fran\u00e7ois Jambou\u00a0with\u00a0Tom Dolan, Nils Palmieri\u00a0with\u00a0Justine Mettraux….<\/p>\n

As for the Solitaire,\u00a0the situation is not as clear<\/strong>,\u00a0as\u00a0although\u00a0we\u00a0have known since November that it will start from\u00a0Saint-Brieuc\u00a0Bay<\/strong>, the rest of the\u00a0race\u00a0course is still to be announced.\u00a0That led\u00a0Anthony Marchand\u00a0to say, “I’m lucky in not having to find a partner, but I don’t know how the youngsters are coping. It’s not simple selling a project to\u00a0sponsors\u00a0without knowing the ports for the\u00a0Solitaire.”\u00a0Recently appointed\u00a0Solitaire du Figaro\u00a0project leader at\u00a0OC Sport,\u00a0Alex Picot<\/a>\u00a0replied:\u00a0\u00ab”We will try to announce the course as soon as possible, but it is not that easy when you are in talks with several local bodies at the same time with discussions… And\u00a0it is particularly complicated in an election year,<\/strong>\u00a0which is the case this year with town council elections.”\u00a0When will we discover the race course?\u00a0“We gave ourselves the\u00a0deadline\u00a0for publishing the Notice of Race and\u00a0all of the course info by 20th February<\/strong>,” replied\u00a0Alex Picot.<\/p>\n

Faced with the absence of a headline partner since the end of the contract with\u00a0Urgo,\u00a0he wished to bring an end to the rumours that there would be a “slimmed down” race course:\u00a0“The date and the\u00a0format\u00a0are already known,\u00a0with three big stages and a\u00a0sprint\u00a0from\u00a025th August to\u00a020th\u00a0September<\/strong>.”\u00a0As for the search for a headline partner,\u00a0Joseph Bizard<\/a>, development\u00a0and\u00a0sponsorship director\u00a0at\u00a0OC Sport Pen Duick,\u00a0explained:\u00a0“We still hope to find someone for this year.” The cost\u00a0of getting involved?\u00a0“The race positions itself for\u00a0around\u00a01 million euros<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Training centres:\u00a0a\u00a0match\u00a0between\u00a0Port-Laf\u00a0and\u00a0Lorient<\/strong><\/p>\n

For many years leading the way in the\u00a0Figaro\u00a0circuit,\u00a0the\u00a0Port-la-For\u00eat\u00a0centre which includes\u00a019\u00a0Figaro\u00a0racers<\/a>\u00a0this year, has experienced increasing competition from the\u00a0group in\u00a0Lorient\u00a0based around the trainer,\u00a0Tanguy Leglatin<\/strong>\u00a0(Mah\u00e9, Delahaye, Le Turquais, Mettraux, Nebout, Grassi, Schwartz, Dolan…).\u00a0The latter seems to be a victim of his own success, as when asked if he was being forced to put a limit on the numbers, replied:\u00a0“That is what we are looking at now, particularly as I have had requests from people not preparing for the Figaro season, in particular,\u00a0foreign federations who were thinking of racing aboard the Figaro 3\u00a0as a way to\u00a0prepare\u00a0for the Paris Olympics in\u00a02024<\/strong>.\u00a0Consequently, I’m thinking of taking on someone to help me.”<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Port-la-For\u00eat,\u00a0with the French training centre,\u00a0there was no way they were going to accept\u00a0that sort of request, admitted\u00a0Christian Le Pape:\u00a0“Here we will be trying to protect French\u00a0know-how,\u00a0so\u00a0it will be increasingly difficult to welcome foreign racers<\/strong>, or if we do\u00a0so,\u00a0it\u00a0will be in very clear exchange programmes.”\u00a0Questioned about the competition from Lorient,\u00a0the later added:\u00a0“It spurs us on and raises everyone’s sights in France with some solid competition for the Centre,\u00a0which is no longer necessarily positioned as the favourite. Some strong teams are training elsewhere: Xavier Macaire\u00a0and\u00a0Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re\u00a0[in\u00a0Saint-Gilles Croix-de-Vie\u00a0with the\u00a0Vend\u00e9e\u00a0Training Team<\/a>, which should have six boats this season \u2013 editor’s note]<\/em>, Gildas Mah\u00e9, Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry…\u00a0We have particularly focused our attention on the youngsters, as we have seven sailors under 26 years of age.”<\/p>\n
