2019 will be remembered for the arrival of the first <\/em>Class40 scows<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0the victory of one of them<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel<\/strong>, in the Transat Jacques Vabre, The\u00a02020 Class40 season<\/strong>\u00a0will see the launch of at least two new\u00a0<\/em>40-foot boats<\/em><\/strong>, while many others have changed their name.\u00a0<\/em>Tip & Shaft\u00a0looks at this lively market and the programme that lies ahead for this season.<\/em><\/p>\n

2019 was a very rich season in terms of boat design for Class40. Last year, we saw\u00a0the launch of the first two Class40 scows<\/strong>:\u00a0Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel<\/em><\/a>,<\/a>\u00a0designed by David Raison for Ian Lipinski, the winner of the Transat Jacques Vabre, and\u00a0Banque du L\u00e9man<\/em><\/a>, Mach 40.4 designed by Sam Manuard, fourth in that transatlantic race with the Swiss duo, Valentin Gautier-Simon Koster. With some looking ahead to the\u00a02022 Route du Rhum<\/a>, and others the\u00a0Globe40<\/a>\u00a0(double-handed round the world race with eight legs, which starts in June\u00a02021), this should boost the construction of new boats over the next two years.<\/p>\n

So far, two\u00a0Mach 40.4 boats are being built<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0JPS<\/a>\u00a0in La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer:\u00a0the first<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0Olivier Magr\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0(to be launched at the end of March), which will be able to rely on\u00a0\u00a0Corentin Douguet<\/strong>\u00a0for her fine tuning (he will be racing in the Quebec-Saint-Malo on her), and the\u00a0second, expected this summer<\/strong>, for another French skipper, whose name is expected to be revealed shortly.\u00a0A third boat may be built later this year<\/strong>\u00a0once again at JPS, but nothing has been signed as yet.<\/p>\n

Other projects are being planned and will probably appear in 2021: the Australian\u00a0Rupert Henry<\/strong>,\u00a0pre-registered<\/a>\u00a0for the Globe40 and won over by the performances of Yoann Richomme\u2019s boat in the 2018 Route du Rhum, has ordered a design from the\u00a0Marc Lombard\u00a0<\/strong>team.\u00a0“We carried out three months of trials using CFD with hulls from our\u00a0Lift<\/a>, but also with the hull from a Mach 4 from David Raison to see how we could improve on that.\u00a0We hope to have the ultimate weapon<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0confirmed\u00a0Eric Levet<\/a>, architect with the team based in La Rochelle. He added,\u00a0“We would have liked our client to come to a quick decision and build his moulds in France, as that would have given us the opportunity to do others, but for the moment, he hasn\u2019t decided. We hope to work with a French client soon.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

This French client could be\u00a0Lalou Roucayrol<\/strong>, who\u00a0announced last week<\/a>\u00a0his intention to build a Class40 at his new yard, Lalou Multi, which he confirmed to\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>:\u00a0“The Class40 corresponds to a size and price which we are able to work on. It fills the gap in some ways between a Mini and a Multi50, and the spirit of the class is close to that of the Multi50.”<\/em>\u00a0The aim of the skipper from Aquitaine, who wishes to pass on his know-how to young sailors and is therefore working with\u00a0Keni Piperol<\/strong>, is to find partners to have a boat for the\u00a02021<\/strong>\u00a0Transat Jacques Vabre,\u00a0<\/strong>before continuing with the 2022\u00a0<\/strong>Route du Rhum and\u00a0The Race Around<\/a>, the other double-handed round the world race (probably also to be raced solo) with four legs in 2023.<\/p>\n

According to our information, a new\u00a0David Raison\u00a0<\/strong>designed boat is also in the pipeline, but for the moment he is unable to comment. And\u00a0Etienne Bertrand\u00a0<\/strong>hopes to work on a scow project and has been thinking about it for several years:\u00a0“While working on J\u00f6rg Riechers\u2019s 40-footer\u00a0[designed by Owen-Clarke, editor\u2019s note], built by the South African yard, Cape Racing Yachts, I met the Director and showed him the designs I had in my case and that really interested him.\u00a0The idea is to build a new boat once the old one is sold<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Among the skippers we talked to, the Belgian sailor,\u00a0Jonas Gerckens<\/a>, who is trying to sell his\u00a0current Class40<\/a>, told us he would like to start work on a new construction in September if he manages to find a partner in addition to Volvo. The same goes for\u00a0William Mathelin-Moreaux<\/a>\u00a0who after Beijaflore pulled out, has been looking for a partner to work with him until the 2022 Route du Rhum with a new boat.\u00a0“Things might get sorted later this month as we seem to be moving forward,”\u00a0<\/em>he told us.<\/p>\n

For both of them, if things work out, they will also need\u00a0to find a yard<\/strong>. The Class President,\u00a0Halvard Mabire<\/a>,\u00a0explained,\u00a0“We are lacking yards and\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>JPS is a bit alone.<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0The latter\u2019s order book is likely to fill up again:\u00a0“We have quite a few of our clients who would like to build a new boat for the Route du Rhum. We haven\u2019t yet had to turn anyone down, but we can only manage four boats a year. We want to keep our customised approach with boats aimed at performance,”<\/em>\u00a0explained\u00a0Nicolas Groleau<\/strong>, the head of the yard in La Trinit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

This lack of yards explains why\u00a0Pogo Structures<\/a>\u00a0is returning to the class<\/strong>\u00a0as\u00a0Erwan Tymen<\/a>, the technical manager told\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>. The yard from SW Brittany had not built a 40-foot boat since\u00a0Kiho<\/em><\/a>\u00a0which belongs to the Japanese sailor, Hiroshi Kitada, and that was back in 2015.\u00a0“Last week,\u00a0we launched a study for the new Pogo 40 S4 with<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Guillaume Verdier<\/em><\/strong>. We had been thinking about it for a long time, but we couldn\u2019t find the time. This year we had a gap in our schedule and as we saw that there was some demand, we grabbed the opportunity. The idea is\u00a0to start work on the construction in September<\/strong>\u00a0and for the boat to be launched in early 2021.”<\/em>\u00a0Finding clients should not be a problem with the yard run by Christian Bouroullec wishing to stick with their methods:\u00a0“We prefer to create our own boat from scratch<\/strong>\u00a0wit a designer rather than build one with the designs given to us by the client.”<\/em><\/p>\n

While the market for new boats looks promising, the second-hand market is also thriving:\u00a0Leyton<\/em><\/a>, which was chartered by Arthur Le Vaillant from Fran\u00e7ois-Ren\u00e9 Carluer, has just been sold to\u00a0Charles-Louis Mourruau<\/a>, who registered at the last minute for The Transat CIC.\u00a0“I had planned to race on her this season, but as I had another offer and I could see how well the scows perform, so\u00a0I sold her with the goal of building a new boat<\/strong>. One designed by Manuard or Verdier would suit me,”<\/em>\u00a0confirmed\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois-Ren\u00e9 Carluer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Among the other boats which recently changed hands,\u00a0Corum<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Mach 40.3) was acquired by the German,\u00a0Christopher Opielok<\/strong>\u00a0for the Globe 40,\u00a0Beijaflore<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Lift40 winner of the Rhum) headed for Granville for the duo\u00a0Beno\u00eet Charron-Nicolas Jossier<\/strong>,\u00a0V&B<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Mach 40.3) is now in American colours (Greg Leonard),\u00a0Campagne de France<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(designed by Nivelt\/Mabire) has become\u00a0Everial<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0Stan Thuret<\/strong>,\u00a0the former\u00a0Tales<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(designed by Botin, winner of the 2014 Rhum) has been chartered by the Italian,\u00a0Andrea Fornaro\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a0<\/strong>Lo\u00efc F\u00e9quet, while another Italian,\u00a0Ernesto Moresino<\/strong>, has bought\u00a0n\u00b0122<\/a>\u00a0to race in the Globe 40. The Akilaria RC2 (designed by Lombard) was until now owned by the\u00a0Croatian triple Olympic skiing medallist,<\/strong>\u00a0Ivica Kostelic<\/strong>, who wants a newer boat. He has plenty to choose from as\u00a0A\u00efna Enfance & Avenir<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Mach 40.3),\u00a0Volvo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Mach 40) and\u00a0the Tizh 40<\/a>\u00a0( Verdier design) aboard which Bertrand de Broc finished eighth in the Transat Jacques Vabre are available\u2026<\/p>\n

\n

2020 season: two transatlantic races, America and Normandy<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Class40 2020 season championship<\/a>\u00a0includes four races,\u00a0The Transat CIC<\/a>\u00a0(start on 10th May),\u00a0the Atlantic Cup<\/a>\u00a0(5th-21st June) in North America,\u00a0the Quebec-Saint-Malo\u00a0(start on 12th July) and the\u00a0Normandy Channel Race<\/a>\u00a0(10th \u2013 20th September).\u00a09 or 10 skippers<\/strong>\u00a0will race in The Transat CIC (Pierre-Charles Mourruau<\/strong>\u00a0and the Swede\u00a0Mikael Ryking<\/strong>\u00a0registered at the last minute),\u00a0“a disappointment”<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0Herv\u00e9 Favre<\/a>, CEO of OC Sport, which is organising the race: “We did our utmost to offer them the best<\/em>\u00a0conditions, including an automatic qualification for the Route du Rhum for all the Transat CIC’s participants.”<\/em>
\nWhat are the reasons why the race is not as popular as previous editions, (11 in 2008, 10 in 2016)?\u00a0“It\u2019s a race that scares racers a bit<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0explained\u00a0Louis Duc<\/strong>, who, if\u00a0he had not lost his boat<\/a>\u00a0on the way back from the Transat Jacques Vabre, would have put this race in his programme. “It doesn\u2019t get people dreaming as much as the<\/em>\u00a0Route du Rhum and it is a bit early in the season,”<\/em>\u00a0added\u00a0Luke Berry<\/strong>\u00a0who will be one of the favourites. For Halvard Mabire,\u00a0“it\u2019s a bit disappointing, but as time goes by, it is getting harder to motivate people to go and do upwind races. The way our boats have evolved does not fit in with that.\u00a0There is also a problem about how attractive the race is<\/strong>: everyone talks about a legendary race, how Tabarly won twice, but that is a story for old-timers like me\u2026 Today, if you ask the general public, it doesn\u2019t mean much.\u201d<\/em>
\nAfter that numbers are likely to be on the rise for the other events with around fifteen boats expected in the Atlantic Cup, twenty or so in the Quebec-Saint-Malo, and probably a few more in the Normandy Channel Race.<\/p>\n
