The Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>\u00a0Notice of Race<\/a>\u00a0gives entrants the opportunity of substituting themselves with a replacement skipper should something happen which means they cannot take the start (that replacement has to be appointed before October 1). Of course this is a scenario which becomes all the more relevant, a choice closely considered by some teams while\u00a0Covid-19<\/strong>\u00a0remains a threat.\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/strong>\u00a0lit up our phones to ask all teams whether or not they are employing this option.<\/em><\/p>\n

It is Amendment\u00a04 to the\u00a0Notice of Race<\/a>\u00a0which specifies all the administrative and medical registration formalities for the replacement skipper, who must also submit his or her sailing CV, and these criteria inform the race director whether to validate the substitute chosen or not.\u00a0An actual qualification passage by the sub-skipper is no longer required<\/strong>, as race director Jacques Cara\u00ebs confirms:\u00a0“There are no longer the 2,000 compulsory miles as in the past, because the substitutes never found the time to do them .<\/em>”<\/p>\n

But equally in the Race\u2019s Covid appendix, which will soon be presented to the skippers, it is specified that the replacements will have to undergo the same tests as the skippers and also be subject to\u00a0the same five-day confinement the week before the start<\/strong>. Which, of course, for some has consequences.\n<\/div>\n

OF THE 33 ENTRANTS 14 SKIPPERS ARE WITHOUT SUBSTITUTES<\/strong><\/div>\n
\nOf the\u00a033<\/strong>\u00a0skippers or teams that\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0interviewed,\u00a014<\/strong>\u00a0told us that they were not presenting a replacement option:\u00a0Fabrice Amedeo, Romain Attanasio, Alexia Barrier, Arnaud Boissi\u00e8res,<\/strong>\u00a0Didac Costa, Manu Cousin, Pip Hare, Ari Huusela, St\u00e9phane Le Diraison , Thomas Ruyant, Damien Seguin, Kojiro Shiraishi, S\u00e9bastien Simon\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Maxime Sorel.<\/strong>\u00a0The reason most often given is\u00a0the close direct relationship, history with and the closeness of the sailor to his partners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0“The connection Kojiro has with the CEO and all the of DMG Mori collaborator is very strong and will not be substituted by another skipper.\u00a0<\/em>Also the skipper must speak Japanese to be able to communicate to all the Japanese followers.\u00a0\u201d,<\/em>\u00a0explains\u00a0Kojiro Shiraishi’s<\/strong>\u00a0press manager, Shota Kanda. On his side,\u00a0Manu Cousin<\/strong>\u00a0talks of\u00a0“A long-standing choice made with Eric S\u00e9tin, the director of the S\u00e9tin group, it is\u00a0a human story\u00a0<\/strong>between him and me”.<\/em><\/p>\n

The same goes for both\u00a0Maxime Sorel<\/strong>\u00a0and also for\u00a0Damien Seguin:<\/strong>\u00a0“I asked Apicil directly and they answered me that if I did not leave, they did not see the point in the boat going.”\u00a0<\/em>And\u00a0Alexia Barrier<\/strong>\u00a0explains:\u00a0“I haven’t had any requests from my partners who are directly attached to me. And anyway the person I would have wanted,\u00a0Joan Mulloy,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>is having a baby soon.”<\/p>\n

Others put forward reasons which centred around risk, such as\u00a0Fabrice Amedeo:\u00a0<\/strong>“I thought for a moment about Eric P\u00e9ron, but, since\u00a0I am the actual owner of my boat,<\/strong>\u00a0I prefer if I have a problem close to the start, that my boat does not go without me and so, yes, I possibly take the consequences with regard my partners, but that is preferable in terms of risk rather than letting the boat go with someone who might potentially not bring it back to me.”\u00a0<\/em>That is also the case for\u00a0St\u00e9phane Le Diraison,<\/strong>\u00a0also the owner of his Imoca:\u00a0“Imagine what happens my replacement skipper if what I experienced in 2016 (dismasting) happens again. That is\u00a0the\u00a0equivalent to a net loss of 400,000 euros<\/strong>, and so I can’t see myself dealing with such debt generated by another skipper. I’m willing to take the risk on my own behalf, but I can’t imagine anybody else could leave it on me.”<\/em><\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Romain Attanasio,<\/strong>\u00a0he changed his mind because of the obligation imposed on the replacement skippers to also confine themselves for five days:\u00a0“I had picked Seb Marsset (who is on his prep team), but I need\u00a0him on the boat during my own confinement. I don’t have the budget to bring in an extra person, so I decided to do without.”<\/em><\/p>\n

It seems most of these skippers who have chosen not to offer a replacement are mostly on medium or modest budget projects. But also there are some entrants who you would consider with podium potential such as\u00a0Thomas Ruyant<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Simon,<\/strong>\u00a0who has also made this \u2018no-sub\u2019 choice, even if it means the risk of seeing their new boat stay at the dock.\u00a0Marcus Hutchinson, Ruyant’s team manager says, “The project was\u00a0built around Thomas and it is so unlikely that he could\u00a0not leave that we have not considered it. But if he were to break his leg\u00a0tomorrow, we would try to find a solution.”\u00a0Simon<\/strong>\u00a0explains:\u00a0“This is a decision that we have made with my partners,\u00a0it is a nice proof of their confidence<\/strong>, they make it clear to me that they are accompanying me and not each other.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The Covid risk?\u00a0“I will act responsibly so as not to catch it, I am well aware of the high stakes,”<\/em>\u00a0replies the skipper from Les Sables d\u2019Olonne.\n<\/div>\n

JOSSE, LUNVEN, MANUARD, MEILHAT, PRATT, JOURDAIN, LE ROUX, CAPE…
\nSUBSTITUTES OF THE BIG TEAMS<\/strong><\/div>\n
\nIf there will be no substitute on\u00a0LinkedOut\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ark\u00e9a Paprec,<\/strong>\u00a0as you might expect most of the big teams have chosen to have one,\u00a0given the sums invested<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cFrom the start, we knew it was a box to check, we have\u00a0to show our responsibility<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0believes Greg Evrard, team manager of\u00a0Corum (Nicolas Troussel).<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe happen to be lucky within our team to have\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Josse<\/strong>, who has taken three Vend\u00e9e Globe starts and our choice naturally is him.<\/em>\u00a0”<\/p>\n

PRB\u2019s Kevin Escoffier<\/strong>\u00a0is on the same page: “The Vend\u00e9e Globe is every four years for the skippers, but also for the sponsors, so we have to plan for all eventualities. For us, even if\u00a0there still are two or three remaining things to finalize, it’s\u00a0Nicolas Lunven<\/strong>. We did the Jacques Vabre together, so he is the obvious one to me.”\u00a0<\/em>And\u00a0Armel Tripon<\/strong>\u00a0explains: “There was a request from our partner L’Occitane who specified that not being at the start would be quite detrimental to the sponsor. So we have a replacement skipper,\u00a0Sam Manuard<\/strong>, the designer of the boat.”<\/em><\/p>\n

In\u00a0Sam Davies\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0corner at\u00a0Initiatives C\u0153ur<\/strong>\u00a0no extended chat on the subject was needed.\u00a0“It was quite quickly decided, it’s\u00a0Paul Meilhat<\/strong>. Our project is ambitious, it also has a dimension other than just purely the sporting dimension, and that alone justifies making sure the boat goes to sea at all costs”,<\/em>\u00a0explains team manager David Sineau. At the\u00a0Alex Thomson Racing Team,<\/strong>\u00a0they have Australian\u00a0Andrew Cape<\/strong>\u00a0standing by with his sea boots ready if required for Hugo Boss, Cape has seven Volvo Ocean Races round the world under his belt as navigator. He and Thomson took second place on the 2008 Barcelona World Race with Cape as co-skipper. He is their in-house meteo expert<\/p>\n

J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou’s<\/strong>\u00a0team did not want to communicate on the subject, choosing to offer some kind of scoop on their announcement, but there is little doubt that\u00a0Christopher Pratt<\/strong>, who sailed with the skipper of\u00a0Charal<\/strong>\u00a0on the 2019\u00a0Transat Jacques Vabre<\/strong>\u00a0will be the replacement for\u00a0Beyou<\/strong>, winner of the\u00a0Vend\u00e9e-Arctic<\/strong>\u00a0solo race. At\u00a0Apivia<\/strong>\u00a0we were told that “the subject is not yet decided”.<\/em>\u00a0But our information suggests,\u00a0Charlie Dalin<\/strong>\u00a0will have a replacement and it will undoubtedly be\u00a0Yann Eli\u00e8s,<\/strong>\u00a0with whom he won last year\u2019s\u00a0Transat Jacques Vabre,<\/strong>\u00a0that is unless he is finally announced for the crew of the\u00a0Maxi Edmond de Rothschild<\/strong>\u00a0for the Jules-Verne.<\/p>\n

The other skippers we caught up with who have replacements are\u00a0Yannick Bestaven<\/strong>\u00a0(who chose\u00a0Roland Jourdain<\/strong>),\u00a0Miranda Merron<\/strong>\u00a0(her life partner and team manager\u00a0Halvard Mabire<\/strong>),\u00a0Cl\u00e9ment Giraud<\/strong>\u00a0(has the owner of his boat\u00a0Erik Nigon<\/strong>). \u00a0Louis Burton<\/strong>\u00a0explains: “We have never looked so thoroughly as we did this year for the simple reason:\u00a0Covid. We chose\u00a0<\/em>Davy Beaudart,<\/strong>\u00a0a good sailor, in whom I have every confidence, he already knows my partners and the boat.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Finally, the\u00a0Banque Populaire<\/strong>\u00a0team has set its sights on\u00a0Erwan Le Roux<\/strong>\u00a0to replace\u00a0Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer<\/strong>, if necessary: \u200b\u200b”We really appreciated the collaboration with him for the Transat AG2R with Armel (Le Cl\u00e9ac’h) which of course did not take place. Erwan has been doing all the sailing with Clarisse since the boat was relaunched, he’s a talented person with a good head on him”<\/em>, comments the team director, Ronan Lucas.\n<\/div>\n

SOME HAVE NOT YET CHOSEN<\/strong><\/div>\n
\nBoris Herrmann<\/strong>\u00a0did not wish to answer the question –\u00a0“We have plans, but it remains an internal matter”<\/em>\u00a0-, same for Alain Gautier, team manager of\u00a0MACSF (Isabelle Joschke).<\/strong>\u00a0So several skippers have not yet decided the identity of their possible replacement. Some because they have other fish to fry:\u00a0“We didn’t ask ourselves that question, we might just get to it,”<\/em>\u00a0Jean Le Cam<\/strong>\u00a0told us. Same thing for\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Destremau<\/strong>\u00a0– “I didn’t take care of it at all, but my brothers are quite able to replace me if necessary”<\/em>\u00a0– and\u00a0Benjamin Dutreux<\/strong>:\u00a0“It was not the priority subject, there is nothing definite, but I think we will try to organise something. “<\/em><\/p>\n

Giancarlo Pedote<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Alan Roura<\/strong>\u00a0are still considering: “The subject is still on the table<\/strong>, we do not know whether we have chosen someone or not, it is a decision that I must take in consultation with the sponsors”,\u00a0<\/em>replied the Italian skipper. On the young Swiss racer\u2019s side, his team told us that\u00a0“nothing is definitively fixed, the health protocol seriously complicates the matter with this compulsory confinement for the replacement.”\u00a0<\/em>And if any who are on the fence right now finally decide to take one, sailors who are looking at their options can always call on a replacement from another team which is allowed by the regulations, that is of course provided that the team in question agrees!<\/div>\n
