It is a topic that continues to have increased importance within the sailboat racing world: sustainable development<\/strong>. Under pressure from the public, some sponsors and its own constituent sailors – like the sailors who have formed The Wave – competitive sailing continues to focus on sustainability as a\u00a0fundamental topic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sam Holliday<\/a>\u00a0is the organizer of\u00a0The Race Around<\/a>, the double-handed Class40,\u00a0round-the-world race,\u00a0which will have a maximum of five stages and\u00a0will\u00a0start in\u00a0three\u00a0years\u00a0time\u00a0from a French port<\/strong>. He is introducing a very simple way to\u00a0ensure maximum attention is paid to this\u00a0issue<\/strong>\u00a0by the competing duos: \u201cWe will offer\u00a0a reduction in registration fees<\/strong>\u00a0[a total fee of\u00a0\u20ac 15,000 excluding tax, Editor’s note] to competitors who seek\u00a0to reduce the carbon impact of the construction of their boat<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0for\u00a0modifications\u00a0made to an existing boat.”<\/p>\n

The precise parameters have yet to be fully refined, but,\u00a0in practice, the rebate\u00a0will\u00a0be offered to sailors who use\u00a0recyclable fibers and\/or resins for the build or refit of their Class40<\/strong>.\u00a0It will be also offered to those who\u00a0share\u00a0their data\u00a0for a\u00a0Life\u00a0Cycle\u00a0Assessment<\/a>\u00a0(LCA)<\/strong>,\u00a0being undertaken\u00a0by the organization, in collaboration with academics and key industry players. \u201cThis information will help us determine the\u00a0baseline data for a future carbon budget<\/strong>\u00a0that we want to implement for the second edition\u201d, confirms Sam Holliday.<\/p>\n

A carbon budget? “The idea is to introduce, on the basis of the data collected from the LCAs of the boats taking part in the first edition, a\u00a0maximum amount of\u00a0carbon emissions permitted during the build and refit process to be respected by the boats that will start in 2027.” According to the organizer Holliday, \u201cThe goal is to allow competitors to understand the process, to see new technologies being proven and to put that knowledge to good use in their next project.” With the idea that the movement will extend beyond the Class40\u00a0to other classes,\u00a0the\u00a0wider\u00a0world of\u00a0sailing\u00a0and other relevant industries<\/strong>. \u201cAll of the data we collect during this process\u00a0will be open source<\/strong>, which is very important to us\u201d, says Sam Holliday.<\/p>\n

Alongside these steps, The Race Around will\u00a0build a demo boat, a fully recyclable Class40<\/strong>, the helm of which will be entrusted to a mixed crew\u00a0who will embark\u00a0on the round-the-world race in 2023. \u201cWe are aiming for\u00a0a\u00a0zero landfill situation<\/strong>\u201d, announces\u00a0Enrico Benco<\/a>, co-founder of GS4C, an Italian SME specializing in sustainable solutions for the composites industry who are a partner of The Race Around. \u201cAnd not just the hull, because\u00a0it’s the process of building the whole boat that we want to decarbonize<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

The idea is to make this project\u00a0a concrete example of the circular economy\u00a0in action<\/strong>: \u201cWe will be able to\u00a0reuse the raw materials recovered from the hardened composite<\/strong>\u00a0to produce new long fibers, without\u00a0compromising\u00a0mechanical performance\u201d, continues this former\u00a0cup veteran, who\u00a0launched the\u00a0Loop 650<\/a>, a Mini 6.50 made from\u00a0recyclable aerospace grade mineral fibers<\/strong>\u00a0and bio-epoxy resin.<\/p>\n

And the goal is clear:\u00a0to sail clean, but fast<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cWe cannot come up with a sustainable boat which is not a fast, competitive boat\u201d,\u00a0explains Sam Holliday. To prove the concept\u00a0we will have to at least match the performance levels of other Class40 boats<\/strong>.\u201d Verdict in 2023!<\/p>\n
