When the Vend\u00e9e Globe starts Sunday November 8 there will be\u00a013 out of the 33 starters<\/strong>\u00a0who have put their faith in\u00a0an NKE pilot<\/strong>\u00a0to help\u00a0helm their\u00a0Imoca – a fairly stable market share over the years.\u00a0The company from Morbihan<\/a>\u00a0has already written its name on the prize list of the event\u00a0three times<\/strong>\u00a0with the victories of\u00a0Michel Desjoyeaux<\/strong>\u00a0(2000 and 2008) and\u00a0Vincent Riou<\/strong>\u00a0(2004), but it has only supplied a few winning projects in recent years. Their partner skipper,\u00a0Armel Tripon<\/a>\u00a0(L\u2019Occitane en Provence) is the leading\u00a0NKE\u00a0ambassador racing around the globe for this edition.<\/p>\n

NKE holds the top spots in the\u00a0Mini 6.50<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Class40<\/strong>, not to mention the\u00a0Figaro Beneteau 3<\/strong>\u00a0where the French company supplies one-design packs for the electronics the helm, but the situation has changed in Imoca. “Our autopilots originally won with the Figaro 1 in the 1990s and also we grew with the Imocas, which moved us to the top”, explains\u00a0Paul Fraisse<\/a>, director of the company created thirty years ago. \u201cBut in recent years,\u00a0competitors have come in with different approaches<\/strong>: they come from the America’s Cup or the TP52s and move in with different technology and prices adapted to the offshore racing market.\u00a0On our part we have ad to react!<\/strong>” The answer is the new pilot called\u00a0HR 2020<\/strong>, still a prototype but already successfully tested on Sodebo Ultim 3, and we have it\u00a0on 6 of the 13 Imocas<\/strong>\u00a0equipped with NKE in the Vend\u00e9e Globe. It will be in the brand’s official offering from 2021.<\/p>\n

An engineer specializing in aeronautics (he worked in particular on the Rafale docking systems),\u00a0Henry de Malet<\/a>\u00a0was hired in 2017 to strengthen the design office of five people out of the 17 that NKE marine electronics. He explains :\u00a0“The first step of my mission consisted of a complete overhaul of the\u00a0HR processor<\/a>. We then built a simulator and processed a huge amount of data, replaying races based on the data recordings from skippers. We fixed some flaws in the old system, made it more robust and based on that,\u00a0we moved on to step two<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Now with the new requirements for driving machines that go faster and faster and lift above the water, the NKE team then sought\u00a0to integrate the relevant new parameters<\/strong>\u00a0into the algorithm with a “target” mode. Henry de Malet explained : \u201cThe flight on an Imoca is complex because it is not constant. Boats are always rising and falling, with big variations in speed. On the HR 2020 pilot, whether the skippers are sailing in compass mode or in wind mode,\u00a0they can add an additional dimension<\/strong>, either heel or speed\u201d.\u00a0In speed mode in particular, the pilot limits performance by allowing it to deviate from the course, precisely what the skippers are looking for in a long-distance race.<\/p>\n

“I was on board L\u2019Occitane when Armel Tripon and Tanguy Leglatin discovered this,\u00a0they were amazed by the stability and the intuitive, self learning side of the interface<\/strong>“, said Henry de Malet. “It’s true that there is a wow! effect because even Yann Eli\u00e8s was impressed when he tried it with St\u00e9phane Le Diraison on Time For Oceans!\u00a0We were undoubtedly a little conservative in the communication<\/strong>\u00a0about this new technology\u201d, regrets Paul Fraisse. For NKE as for its competitors, the die is now cast for this edition of the Vend\u00e9e Globe. But the work on these new generations of pilots has only just begun.<\/p>\n
