Tip &amp; Shaft looks at the success story\u00a0that the publisher of sailing games obviously is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Covid-19 pandemic has badly affected the economy all around the world but there are certain certain sectors of activity that have\u00a0experience strong growth. That is the case with eSport and particularly eSailing as shown by the main player in the market,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualregatta.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtual Regatta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Leading the company that he founded in 2006,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/philippe.guigne.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philippe Guign\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0confirms: &#8220;<strong>The first lockdown\u00a0had a very clear impact<\/strong>\u00a0on our activity, especially on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualregatta.com\/en\/inshore-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the inshore game<\/a>: we have almost multiplied our audience by 20 with up to\u00a0<strong>200,000 players per month<\/strong>\u00a0compared to barely 20 000 before. The period also allowed us to roll out projects that we didn&#8217;t expect to see happening for a year or two.\u00a0<strong>Many organizers of canceled or postponed events turned to us to replace them with a digital regatta<\/strong>.&#8221; This was the case of the Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ, Spi Ouest-France (38,000 players on the inshore game in April), the Beneteau Cup. And to meet demand in March Virtual Regatta launched\u00a0<strong>The Great Escape<\/strong>, a 100% digital transatlantic, which attracted\u00a0<strong>150,000 players<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And internationally, the online game publisher saw the activity grow significantly with many cancelled events developing their virtual equivalent. That includes\u00a0<strong>the 100% digital events organized in partnership with World Sailing<\/strong>. \u201cWe went from\u00a0<strong>6 to 20 national federations<\/strong>\u00a0which participated in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esailing-wc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eSailing world championship<\/a>, including some have gone all out, such as the RYA,\u00a0which won the Nations Cup, which was originally supposed to come in year later\u201d, continues Philippe Guign\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>They have already established\u00a0<strong>contacts with the IOC<\/strong>\u00a0with a view to the Tokyo Games: \u201cI cannot say more, but we are at the contract signing stage. This is proof that they are interested in e-sailing, they even asked us to allow them\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/esailing-wc.com\/2020\/11\/04\/esailing-world-championship-and-nations-cup-finals-to-be-shown-on-the-olympic-channel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to broadcast the Nations Cup final on their Olympic channels<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the first lockdown\u00a0prompted the inshore regattas games to take off in unexpected proportions (today they represent around\u00a0<strong>15% of the company&#8217;s overall turnover<\/strong>), the second lockdown, since the end of October in France, contributed to the success of the virtual Vend\u00e9e Globe. There are just over\u00a0<strong>958,000 boats registered<\/strong>\u00a0as against 450,000 in 2016. &#8220;There was certainly an effect, but 15 days before the start before confinement therefore, we already had three times the number of registered entrants as we had at the same time in 2016 \u201d, explains Guign\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>But how many subscribe to the full pack\u00a0paid option (\u20ac 29.99) and VIP subscriptions? \u201c<strong>I never communicate these figures<\/strong>. What I can just say, is that growth is proportionately more significant than that of the number of players, the ratio really has increased&#8221;, replies the boss of Virtual Regatta who adds that\u00a0<strong>these paid options add up to 80% of offshore racing sales to date<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And there is more income coming\u00a0from\u00a0advertising:\u00a0<strong>Corum<\/strong>\u00a0is sponsoring the 3D screen,\u00a0<strong>B&amp;G<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ulysse Nardin<\/strong>\u00a0the compass and the stopwatch. Daily intermediate panels &#8211; sold for 6,000 euros \u2013 are also offered to advertisers. For two years, private races\u00a0are also marketed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.evolutionmedia.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evolution Media<\/a>\u00a0for boat or races\u00a0sponsors, but also for other companies (Click &amp; Boat, France Info, L\u2019Equipe\u2026). They are given the right to 100 full packs, to a proper\u00a0ranking, to a game branded in the colors of the company and to various \u00e0 la carte activations.\u00a0<strong>About thirty private\u00a0races\u00a0<\/strong>were sold for this Vend\u00e9e Globe, for budgets\u00a0<strong>from 6,000 to 10,000 euros excluding tax<\/strong>\u00a0(add 2,000 euros of technical costs).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bureau Vall\u00e9e<\/strong>, the sponsors of Louis Burton, have subscribed for the first time to have a private race. \u201cWe started the race at the last moment ; two days later, at the start we had\u00a0<strong>1,300 players, it was quite impressive<\/strong>\u201d comments the digital and comms director Adrien Peyroles. \u201cToday we see a real interaction between Louis&#8217; Vend\u00e9e Globe and our virtual players and that confirms that\u00a0<strong>eSport is becoming a real sport today<\/strong>.&#8221; So that Bureau Vall\u00e9e has chosen\u00a0<strong>to sponsor a team of gamers<\/strong>\u00a0named INC, at the top of the inter-team ranking this Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true for\u00a0<strong>Corum L\u2019Epargne<\/strong>. Nicolas Troussel\u2019s sponsor has also brought together the virtual and real world. \u201cFor the 2019 Jacques Vabre, we signed up to a private race and that worked out well in the company. For the Vend\u00e9e Globe, as we were trying to develop our reputation, we decided to do a lot offering 200 prize packs, sponsoring the 3D version, but also a pro team of gamers,\u201d confirmed the head of communications and sponsoring,\u00a0<strong>Matthieu Masquelier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The pro team he was talking about,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mces.gg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MCES<\/a>, was launched back in late 2018 in Marseille. In particular they focus on blockbusters such as League of Legends and Fortnite.\u00a0<strong>For the first time this year, they have entered the world of eSailing<\/strong>. Their founder and president,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/romain-sombret-ba444693\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Romain Sombret<\/a>, explains: \u201cThere are several of us in Marseille in our forties who are interested in sailing. It is here that the sailing events for the 2024 Olympics will be held and some of our investors encouraged us to look at this game. We therefore recently took part in the World eSailing championship final (5th and 9th place), but\u00a0<strong>the Vend\u00e9e Globe is our first offshore competition<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the big eSport games, there is\u00a0<strong>no prize money. Sponsorship is what counts<\/strong>. \u201cVirtual Regatta offers good visibility to sponsors whom we don\u2019t see in other games. That is why we signed up with Corum who would never have joined us for Fortnite,\u201d added Romain Sombrier. The head of MCES believes that\u00a0<strong>2020 is a turning point for eSport:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cOur turnover is expected to go from 600,000-700,000 euros to 1.2-1.3 million over the year.\u00a0<strong>The world is turning to gaming<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A new phenomenon for Virtual Regatta,\u00a0<strong>this form of sponsorship also concerns pro sailors<\/strong>, some of whom have found partners specifically for the virtual Vend\u00e9e Globe. That is the case in particular for\u00a0<strong>Lo\u00efck Peyron<\/strong>\u00a0and the Figaro racer,\u00a0<strong>Achille Nebout<\/strong>. \u201cI used to play Virtual Regatta with the status of a certified skipper, but was spotted by the president of Amarris Group, who was interested in sailing sponsorships. He understood when he saw the example of Lo\u00efck Peyron that\u00a0<strong>the virtual Vend\u00e9e Globe could be a great opportunity to step into this field<\/strong>. He contacted me on Linkedin and I got in touch with another of my partners, Primeo Energie.
