The\u00a0Figaro B\u00e9n\u00e9teau season<\/a>\u00a0gets underway again in a month from now with the\u00a0Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ<\/a>, the first of the\u00a0seven events<\/strong>\u00a0on the race calendar. In spite of the economic and health crisis, the class seems to be resisting well. Tip & Shaft looks at their latest projects.<\/em><\/p>\n

After the 2020 season ended with a triumphant success for Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h, who won the Solitaire du Figaro and became French Elite offshore racing champion, the Figaro Beneteau season starts again in March with the\u00a0Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ<\/strong>, closed off to the public but with\u00a0around 25 solo sailors<\/a>\u00a0registered.<\/p>\n

Between the seasons, we saw\u00a0the election<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0a new board and chairman, Jean-Bernard Le Boucher<\/strong>\u00a0(replacing Yvon Breton), who explained his goals: \u201cThe new board aims to be particularly open with people coming from various backgrounds to ensure we fulfil\u00a0the requirements of everyone in the class, in particular in terms of communication.\u00a0Over the past few years, we haven\u2019t done enough communicating<\/strong>, in particular with the French Elite offshore racing championship, which is something that is not a primary concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

This explains the arrival of\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Quiviger<\/a>, in charge of sailing clients at the Rivacom agency, but who states he is there in a personal capacity: \u201cMy goal is\u00a0to find partners to help the class organise things and become more professional<\/strong>. Today, in terms of promoting the class, it does not do as well as classes like the Mini 6.50 and Imoca.\u201d A development committee including the newly elected member, Jean-Bernard Le Boucher and Eric P\u00e9ron will be taking care of looking for partners, in particular\u00a0a headline partner for the championship<\/strong>, which costs around 200,000 to 300,000 \u20ac\u00a0 a year, according to Fran\u00e7ois Quiviger).<\/p>\n

The number of competitors
\nis close to last year<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are five events on the calendar of the French championship\u00a0this season<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ, the Solo Guy Cotten and the double-handed race around Brittany (weighting 2), the double-handed transatlantic race Concarneau-Saint-Barth (weighting 4) and the Solitaire du Figaro (weighting 6). The Sardinha Cup (double-handed) and the Fastnet (double-handed) are also in the official schedule. And for 2022, Jean-Bernard Le Boucher has announced: \u201cWe are examining two possibilities \u2013 with\u00a0a strong event in the Mediterranean and competing in the Route du Rhum<\/strong>, which would be very good news for the class and the sailors.\u201d<\/p>\n

There should be\u00a0around the same number of sailors taking part in the circuit as in 2020<\/strong>, in particular in the two major events of the season, the\u00a0double-handed Transatlantic race<\/strong>\u00a0(start on 9th May) and the\u00a0Solitaire du Figaro<\/strong>\u00a0(22 Aug-19 Sept), both organised by OC Sport Pen Duick.\u00a0Alex Picot<\/a>, their project manager talked about the former: \u201cAll of the partners considered that we needed a minimum number of entrants and we fixed that at 15:\u00a016 boats were registered<\/strong>\u00a0by 31st\u00a0January, so the transatlantic race will take place.\u201d<\/p>\n

As\u00a0for the Solitaire<\/strong>, the course for which will be unveiled in mid-March with a start and finish in Loire Atlantique and three or four legs including one in Brittany, the organiser and the class are\u00a0hoping for similar numbers to last year<\/strong>\u00a0(35 skippers). Jean-Bernard Le Boucher remains confident: \u201cToday, the number of class members is at the same level as at the same time last year.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a similar reaction at the training centres with around ten boats in\u00a0Lorient<\/strong>, seven in\u00a0Saint-Gilles Croix-de-Vie<\/strong>\u00a0and a dozen in\u00a0Port-la-For\u00eat<\/strong>. \u201cIn all, 15 to 17 racers from the centre will be taking part this season, which is a lot, so\u00a0this is not a time of hardship<\/strong>\u00a0in terms of the numbers,\u201d explained Christian Le Pape, who runs the Finist\u00e8re offshore training centre.<\/p>\n

Damage seems limited<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tip & Shaft looked at who will be competing:\u00a030\u00a0replied that they were certain of taking part in the Solitaire<\/strong>. This proves that the class was in the end not so severely affected by the economic crisis. The trainer for the group in Lorient, Tanguy Leglatin noted: \u201cI thought it would be more affected<\/strong>, because it brings together a lot of small and medium-sized businesses, but in the end the damage has been limited.”<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0some have lost their partner<\/strong>: that is the case for\u00a0Anthony Marchand<\/strong>\u00a0(Groupe Royer), who will nevertheless be competing this year alongside Fabien Delayahe in the double-handed races, and\u00a0Corentin Douguet<\/strong>\u00a0(NF Habitat), who will also be lining up in the double-handed transatlantic race as co-skipper (an official announcement is expected soon).<\/p>\n

The crisis has also affected\u00a0Damien Cloarec<\/strong>: he has just found out that Sonergia, who was going to be at his side in the Solitaire, cannot continue, so he is looking for new partners, which is not that easy in the current context. \u201cI admit that\u00a0I have stopped looking<\/strong>,\u201d declared Robin Follin, who has decided to work in the family-run decorating business, but still hopes that he will be able to take part in the Solitaire with a small budget.<\/p>\n

Yann Eli\u00e8s tempted,
\nVincent Riou will be back<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It’s harder to find partners, but we feel that we are opening a small window of fresh air, the Vend\u00e9e Globe has shown it well, our sport makes us dream<\/strong>,” explains\u00a0Violette Dorange<\/strong>, who is looking for to make ends meet, but will run the whole season, including the double-handed Transat with Alan Roberts.<\/p>\n

S\u00e9bastien Marsset<\/strong>, who will accompany Luce Molinier in doubles and would see himself racing the Solitaire, adds: \u201cThe impact of the Vend\u00e9e Globe is helping a bit. Now\u00a0you have to be realistic in what you are proposing<\/strong>, because even if you feel that clubs want to come, many have to make budgetary efforts at the moment. ”<\/p>\n

Among the other sailors wishing to take part in the Solitaire, we find\u00a0Lo\u00efs Berrehar<\/strong>\u00a0(co-skipper of Tom Laperche on the doubles races) who says: \u201cThere is a good chance that I will be at the start. My priority was the Transat Jacques Vabre, which I will be racing in Imoca, but as the start has been postponed and that of the Solitaire advanced, combining the two becomes possible.”<\/p>\n

This also motivates Yann Eli\u00e8s<\/strong>\u00a0(also entered in doubles, alongside Martin Le Pape): “I really want to run the Solitaire, it can be the opportunity\u00a0to start a story with a sponsor<\/strong>, before the Route du Rhum in 2022 and the Vend\u00e9e Globe two years later. As for\u00a0Vincent Riou<\/strong>\u00a0he confirms that he will be at the start of the Solitaire this year.<\/p>\n

Renewals and confirmations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several sailors have seen their partnerships confirmed or renewed: Fabien Delahaye, Tanguy Le Turquais, Martin Le Pape, Beno\u00eet Mariette, Nils Palmieri, Xavier Macaire, Alan Roberts, Pierre Leboucher, Eric P\u00e9ron, Tom Dolan and Gildas Mah\u00e9 (partners on the Transat in double), while Robin Marais,\u00a0Marc Mallaret and Italian Alberto Bona\u00a0have confirmed their presence on the circuit (except Transat).<\/p>\n

The Skipper Macif (Pierre Quiroga and Erwan Le Draoulec), Bretagne CMB (Tom Laperche, Gaston Morvan and Elodie Bonafous), Normandy Region (Alexis Loison with Guillaume Pirouelle) and Team Vend\u00e9e Formation (Charlotte Yven) will also be there.<\/p>\n

Some skippers have even found new partners, such as\u00a0Achille Nebout<\/strong>\u00a0(Amarris, who join Primeo Energie). But there are\u00a0many newcomers making their debut<\/strong>\u00a0on the circuit, and in particular on La Solitaire: Charlotte Yven, from La Rochelle Alexis Thomas, Englishman David Paul, Estelle Greck, Spaniard Pep Costa and former Navy combat swimmer Philippe Hartz.<\/p>\n

Olympic ambitions<\/strong>\u00a0feature more and more among the fleet, such for ex Mini sailor\u00a0Luce Molinier<\/strong>\u00a0and the Americans\u00a0Jesse Fielding<\/strong>\u00a0and Italian two times Olympian turned Volvo racer\u00a0Francesca Clapcich<\/strong>\u00a0(who race together in doubles races, separately in the solo events) all arrive with the ambition of train for the offshore doubles event for the Paris 2024 Olympics (if confirmed).<\/p>\n

“The Figaro circuit is\u00a0the best single and double-handed circuit in the world<\/strong>.\u00a0No question.\u00a0Our team is aiming at the 2024 Olympic Competition and strategically there is no better way to prepare for the competition than enter the Figaro Season” says American Jesse Fielding, whose US sponsor is State Street Bank and Trust. While Luce Molinier adds: \u201cTo be as competitive as possible on the Olympic project, I have to do the Figaro. ”<\/p>\n

And\u00a0what about the Vend\u00e9e Globe\u2019s Figarists<\/strong>, who do often like to return to their first love after they have returned from racing around the world? “I’m always tempted, but it’s just not reasonable,” replies\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou<\/strong>. “I did think about it during the Vend\u00e9e Globe, but it will all be too tight with the Jacques Vabre”, adds\u00a0Charlie Dalin<\/strong>, while for\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Simon<\/strong>, it is a case of\u2026.”No\u2026.. not at the moment.”<\/p>\n
