After\u00a0the Ultimes and Class40<\/a>\u00a0last week it is the time for the Imoca and Ocean Fifty as we evaluate the prospects for the Transat Jacques Vabre.\u00a029 duos<\/strong>\u00a0in these two classes set off on Sunday on the same 5,800-mile course to Fort-de-France, via the Brazilian archipelago of Fernando de Noronha.\u00a0Francis Le Goff<\/strong>, race director as well as his weather assistant\u00a0Yann Chateau<\/strong>,\u00a0Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire<\/strong>, director of the P\u00f4le Finist\u00e8re at Port-la-For\u00eat,\u00a0Antoine Mermod<\/strong>, the president of the Imoca class, as well as sailors\u00a0Arthur Le Vaillant<\/strong>,\u00a0Yoann Richomme<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Maxime Sorel<\/strong>\u00a0and the journalist\u00a0Jacques Guyader<\/strong>\u00a0(Ouest-France) make their predictions for<\/em>\u00a0Tip & Shaft.<\/p>\n

There will be\u00a022 Imocas<\/a>\u00a0mustered on the start line on Sunday, a record for a post Vend\u00e9e Globe year (there were 13 in 2017). The\u00a0logical favourites<\/strong>\u00a0as much now because of the display on the Fastnet and then during the D\u00e9fi Azimut is\u00a0Apivia<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Charlie Dalin \/ Paul Meilhat) and is cited as the most likely winner by six of our seven experts.\u00a0“They have\u00a0a psychological advantage<\/strong>. The pairing is good, the boat is in top shape and everyone else knows they are going really fast,”<\/em>\u00a0said Francis Le Goff.\u00a0“Upwind, the speed differential with the others might be more than two knots”<\/em>, confirms Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire.<\/p>\n

Where does this supremacy come from?\u00a0“With MerConcept, they had the ability to detect areas of development very early after the Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u00a0The basic package was solid and now they really took a step forward<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0responds Yoann Richomme.\u00a0“Are some duos going to keep up or are we going to attend a Fastnet repeat?”<\/em>, wonders the double winner of the Solitaire du Figaro.<\/p>\n

They will be able to count on\u00a0foils designed before the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>\u00a0rule change, and therefore larger.\u00a0“It’s a definite plus, especially in light to medium conditions,”<\/em>\u00a0recognizes Antoine Mermod, \u00a0who adds, however:\u00a0“I notice that boats like LinkedOut and the two 11th Hour, which have foils at designed under the new rule are going very fast as well.”<\/em><\/p>\n

These three boats are also the most often cited for the podium, starting with\u00a0LinkedOut<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Thomas Ruyant \/ Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re), a\u00a0“safe bet”<\/em>\u00a0for all of our experts. At the head of the Imoca Globe Series and on all the 2021 podiums,\u00a011th Hour Alaka’i\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>completes the trio:\u00a0“Justine (Mettraux) and SiFi (Simon Fisher)\u00a0have a different way of sailing offshore<\/strong>. They can make gains in strategy but never hesitate about changing a sail! Whatever happens, they will be there or thereabouts “<\/em>, assures Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire.<\/p>\n

Lots of outsiders,<\/span>
\nsome unknowns<\/span><\/h2>\n

Behind these three names\u00a0hovers\u00a0Charal<\/em><\/strong>, cited several times among the top ranks but never as winner:\u00a0“We know their qualities as competitors and they need to reunite with the feeling of success\u00a0<\/em>thinks Yann Chateau.\u00a0The end of the course\u00a0<\/strong>between Fernando de Noronha and Martinique where there will be quite\u00a0a few VMG downwind stages can also help them<\/strong>“<\/em>,\u00a0Charal<\/em>\u00a0is \u00a0very comfortable on these points.<\/p>\n

At the foot of the podiums this year,\u00a0Ark\u00e9a Paprec<\/strong><\/em>, have sailed and progressed a lot and is also one of the serious outsiders. Now sailing with triple winner (twice in Imoca) Yann Eli\u00e8s, whom the Transat Jacques Vabre has often been good for, S\u00e9bastien Simon, whose last race with his sponsor this is, has nothing to lose.<\/p>\n

This transatlantic race will also be an opportunity to dispel some doubts:\u00a0how will Louis Burton and Davy Beaudart take advantage of\u00a0Bureau Vall\u00e9e 3<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(formerly\u00a0L\u2019Occitane<\/em>), whose suspected potential might now be demonstrated over 5,800 miles in contact with the fleet? Will\u00a0the new foils from\u00a0Corum L\u2019Epargne<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Nicolas Troussel \/ S\u00e9bastien Josse) give the Kouyoumdjian design more of the power that it lacks in light air? And of course,\u00a0what can we expect from the new\u00a011th Hour Malama<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry \/ Charlie Enright), launched only in August?<\/p>\n

11th<\/sup>\u00a0Hour Malama<\/em>\u00a0is an evolution of\u00a0Apivia<\/em>\u00a0and is mainly designed by Verdier for The Ocean Race, but so far\u00a0the only Imoca launched post Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>\u00a0has hardly ever raced. But some observers were impressed by the images taken off the coast of Ushant.\u00a0“The boat looks like a machine!\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Confirms Jacques Guyader.\u00a0\u201cAnd when Bid\u00e9gorry has a fast boat in his hands, it usually goes well.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Leyton<\/em>\u00a0Favourites<\/span>
\nIn Ocean Fifty<\/span><\/h2>\n

On the same 5,800-mile course, the\u00a0seven Ocean Fifty<\/a>\u00a0which are lined up on the dock in Le Havre will likely enjoy a high-level match up. That is even more especially since the creation this year of the\u00a0Pro Sailing Tour<\/strong>, which included an offshore race between Toulon and Brest of 1,650 miles which sort of\u00a0allowed the crews to train well.\u00a0“I have the impression that\u00a0everyone has shifted the focus to performance<\/strong>\u00a0throughout the season and the races are tight. It promises to be a great race!”<\/em>\u00a0Says Francis Le Goff.<\/p>\n

That race could have two appearances, according to Arthur Le Vaillant, former skipper of\u00a0Leyton<\/em>:\u00a0“If it is down to weather strategy, everyone has an option to win as much as the gains are made very quickly on these boats.\u00a0If it’s a race of pure speed, some have proven to be faster.<\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Much like\u00a0Apivia<\/em>\u00a0in the Imocas,\u00a0Leyton<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0has shown speed and consistency this season, winning all the legs of the Pro Sailing Tour. The boat which is a very well prepared VPLP design (formerly\u00a0Ciela Village<\/em>) led by Sam Goodchild and Aymeric Chappellier is unanimous among our forecasters.<\/p>\n

Behind Leyton the class is very open with a trio made up of\u00a0Arkema 4<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Quentin Vlamynck \/ Lalou Roucayrol),\u00a0Solidaires en Peloton-Arsep<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Thibaut Vauchel Camus \/ Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Duthil) and\u00a0Koesio<\/strong><\/em>. This latter is a boat built at Persico, the latest VPLP design and sailed by the three-time winner of the Transat Jacques Vabre, Erwan Le Roux who this time is sailing with Xavier Macaire.\u00a0“Koesio is new and untrialled by comparison but Erwan has such experience with these boats that I don’t see him very far from the winner,”<\/em>\u00a0continues Francis Le Goff.\u00a0“The boat looks very Grand Prix-style but the team is of a high calibre,”<\/em>\u00a0adds Maxime Sorel, who has sailed this season with Gilles Lamir\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Most dangerous\u00a0Arkema 4<\/em>,
\nLeyton’s<\/em>\u00a0challenger this season<\/span><\/h2>\n

“Even if his boat is reputed to be heavier,\u00a0we cannot exclude Thibault Vauchel-Camus on this type of course<\/strong>“<\/em>, thinks Jacques Guyader. Vauchel-Camus, who is racing with Fred Duthil (2nd in 2019), showed in the last act of the Pro Sailing Tour in particular that he is\u00a0very strong offshore<\/strong>\u00a0and capable of pushing his VPLP plan very hard. Finally, while many of our interviewees admit not knowing Quentin Vlamynck well, it is clear that the duo he forms with his mentor Lalou Roucayrol has proven to be Leyton’s most dangerous challenger this season. This Transat Jacques Vabre could be an opportunity to confirm the Neyhousser design which was launched a year ago and for its young skipper of 29 years to make a name for himself on the big stage.<\/p>\n

One thing is certain: if some routings suggest the first Ocean Fifty will be in the lead at Fort-de-France ahead of all the other classes, their race will be much less linear than the old Brazilian format:\u00a0“The course is 1,500 miles longer and the last section is new.\u00a0It will not necessarily be all over by Fernando de Noronha<\/strong>\u00a0as in the past,”\u00a0<\/em>warns Jacques Guyader. That\u2019s an analysis shared by Arthur Le Vaillant:\u00a0“It’s a course that involves much less reaching. It can put less powerful boats back in the frame and we are not immune to a surprise …”<\/em><\/p>\n
