Use it Again!<\/a>\u00a0is under starter\u2019s orders. Ellen MacArthur’s former trimaran which will be sailed by project founder\u00a0Romain Pilliard and Spanish ace Alex Pella<\/strong>\u00a0will leave La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer very soon heading for Cadiz, from where they will set off in pursuit of a round-the-world \u2018the wrong way\u2019 circumnavigation record. (*). Whilst completing their preparation the pair of co-skippers made sure they took on board\u00a0ample cartridges of adhesives and resins<\/strong>\u00a0supplied by\u00a0Araldite<\/a>\u00a0who are the\u00a0technical partner<\/strong>\u00a0of the project. On such a long and very demanding challenge these will undoubtedly be useful!<\/p>\n

This partnership was formed a few months ago, as explained by\u00a0Cl\u00e9ment Denis<\/a>, who is director of commercial development and operational marketing at Huntsman, the owner of the Araldite brand – and who is also a former sailor on the Mini circuit:\u00a0“Following\u00a0an article<\/a>\u00a0published in May in Tip & Shaft, Romain was one of a number of people who contacted us.\u00a0We liked his project<\/strong>, firstly because it is very challenging; secondly because, even if we all want them to need to use our products as little as possible, he and Alex are probably going to use them at some point during the trip and\u00a0in some pretty hostile marine environments<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Within the framework of this technical collaboration, Cl\u00e9ment Denis and his team have\u00a0supplied Romain Pilliard with the appropriate adhesives<\/strong>\u00a0(polyurethanes, epoxy, methacrylates), resins and Araldite hardeners, which they needed whilst preparing for this round-the-world passage, but also advising how and what they could be used for. By accompanying each product with\u00a0a simplified sheet<\/strong>\u00a0explaining the conditions under which a particular adhesive should be used and for which particular type of requirement…<\/p>\n

“We used certain products\u00a0during the preparation<\/strong>, especially when it was necessary to make a monolithic glued join for some reinforcements of panels,”\u00a0<\/em>confirms Romain Pilliard.\u00a0“Besides this we are taking\u00a0on board adhesives for possible repairs at sea<\/strong>, some adapted to the temperatures, be that heat or damp and cold, such as the\u00a0Araldite 2051<\/a>, which adheres very well under water and in the cold. As we are leaving for three or four months, we have not scrimped on taking materials, we should have whatever is needed!”<\/em><\/p>\n

And for Araldite, this partnership goes beyond a simple supply of products, it is also\u00a0part of their global strategy of sustainable development<\/strong>:\u00a0“The message conveyed by Romain about the circular economy and recycling is absolutely a key element for us,”<\/em>\u00a0confirms Cl\u00e9ment Denis.\u00a0“Within our\u00a0Advanced Materials division<\/a>, we have launched\u00a0a life cycle analysis of our products<\/strong>\u00a0which shows that many of them are partly biobased, our aim is to go further and to\u00a0offer more eco-responsible products<\/strong>. This is also why we are in the process of hiring a sustainability manager.”<\/em><\/p>\n

(*) No multihull to date has completed this round-the-world trip \u2018the wrong way round\/westabouts\u2019 and there is no reference time for two handed, the record (single-handed) having been held since 2004 by Jean-Luc Van den Heede (122 days 14 hours 3 minutes) after he left Ushant.<\/em><\/p>\n
