Plastimo<\/a>, the Lorient-based company which specializes in maritime safety in particular continues its long held strategy of collaborating with top professional sailors, particularly offshore racers.\u00a0“Listening of users is part of our DNA<\/strong>, most specifically the experience and feedback of the elite racers definitely represent\u00a0extra inspiration and exciting technical challenges<\/strong>\u00a0for our R & D and marketing team”,\u00a0<\/em>explains Marketing Director,\u00a0Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Blaudeau<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And valuable lessons for all are often learned. In particular\u00a0the misadventure which befell Kevin Escoffier<\/strong>\u00a0during the last Vend\u00e9e Globe. He saw his Imoca PRB sink in three minutes before being finally rescued by Jean Le Cam. There have been many lessons taken from the experience.\u00a0“Our doors were wide open to him. Kevin\u2019s technical approach of the product combined with a very cartesian evaluation of the extreme conditions, helped Plastimo team\u00a0to optimize our liferaft design and production<\/strong>“<\/em>, continues Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Blaudeau.<\/p>\n

The conversations between the Kevin Escoffier and the Lorient-based company have directly led to the design of a\u00a0new liferaft<\/a>\u00a0for the Imoca class for the first time.\u00a0This now includes\u00a0a VHF with integrated GPS, an AIS<\/strong>\u00a0beacon and\u00a0radar reflective tapes<\/strong>. They have also\u00a0<\/strong>consolidate\u00a0to the tie up between the class and Plastimo, who are now\u00a0Imoca\u2019s safety partne<\/strong>r, as well as for the Figaro Beneteau class.<\/p>\n

Plastimo,\u00a0who\u00a0has equipped\u00a0a large majority of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe fleet<\/strong>\u00a0(100% of Ultims, 80% of Imocas, 70% of Ocean Fifty and Class40s, etc.), has also established\u00a0safety partnerships<\/strong>\u00a0with skippers like Yoann Richomme, Damien Seguin, Antoine Carpentier, Fran\u00e7ois Gabart,\u00a0Armel Le Cleac\u2019h\u00a0and Kevin Escoffier…<\/p>\n

Another example is the design of their latest innovation,\u00a0the Super Light Racing 196 lifejacket<\/a>. Plastimo’s research and development cell had\u00a0prototypes tested by Kevin Escoffier, Fran\u00e7ois Gabart, Mini racers<\/strong>\u00a0and also French national marine commandos.\u00a0“Fran\u00e7ois and Kevin asked us to make the deflated vest more ergonomic,\u00a0to be able to move more freely<\/strong>\u00a0but also once inflated they wanted that the head support would be more comfortable to limit fatigue,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says\u00a0Mo\u00efse Arribard<\/a>, Plastimo’s research and development manager.\u00a0“The commandos suggested to us that\u00a0the Lifejackets could release air if necessary<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois found that very good, because during a capsize, he might get stuck under the trampoline if the vest is inflated.”<\/em><\/p>\n

As a result of this collaborative approach, the SLR 196 vest is now widely available at\u00a0a price, affordable for this type of product, of 200 euros<\/strong>:\u00a0“We want to be recognized by the elite, but\u00a0make accessible to all the results of our research and of our sharing of experiences<\/strong>. We want to advance safety at sea in general<\/em>“, explains Fr\u00e9deric Blaudeau. For that reason, Plastimo has organized\u00a0a master class entitled Safety First<\/strong>\u00a0with Kevin Escoffier:\u00a0“Boaters of different profiles were able to participate in rescue exercises with Plastimo equipment. They could learn from experiences of real situations and we were able to benefit from their feedback…\u00a0It’s a win-win!<\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0enthuses Fr\u00e9deric Blaudeau.<\/p>\n
