Charles Caudrelier<\/strong>\u00a0won<\/a>\u00a0the 12th edition of the\u00a0Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe<\/strong>\u00a0in Ultim on Wednesday ahead of Fran\u00e7ois Gabart and Thomas Coville. Aided by experts \u2013 sailors Pascal\u00a0Bid\u00e9gorry<\/strong>\u00a0and Franck\u00a0Cammas<\/strong>, the race director of Finist\u00e8re Atlantique (among others things) Gildas\u00a0Morvan<\/strong>, Christian\u00a0Le Pape<\/strong>, former director of the Finist\u00e8re racing center off Port-la-For\u00eat, and Pierre-Marie\u00a0Bourguinat<\/strong>, journalist who follows the Ultims for the organization -,\u00a0<\/em>Tip & Shaft,\u00a0offers you\u00a0a decryption of this announced success<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

A good cast<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

February 2019. Three months after S\u00e9bastien Josse retired from the 2018 Route du Rhum (float damage), he was let go by Gitana Team.\u00a0“We were convinced that we had the machine to do great things, but we couldn’t get there the way we wanted to,”<\/em>\u00a0General Manager Cyril Dardashti reminds Tip & Shaft today.\u00a0“It was a super innovative project, hyper audacious,\u00a0I think that at one point, S\u00e9bastien started to have doubts<\/strong>, and when you doubt, you are no longer able to do things correctly. That dynamic belief is what led to what we see today.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

Gitana Team were counting on two skippers instead of one with\u00a0the Franck Cammas\/Charles Caudrelier pairing<\/strong>, which according to Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry,\u00a0“happened just when the boat was reaching her peak. We mustn\u2019t forget the work S\u00e9bastien Josse did before.”<\/em>\u00a0“Even if the story was that it was just a few friends who got on well together, there was the always that\u00a0risk of creating a conflict between two egos<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0added Pierre-Marie Bourguinat.\u00a0“Clearly that was not to be the case and they really moved the project forwards together.\u00a0That is the mark of a strong team that is never attached to just one skipper<\/strong>, like the other teams.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Franck Cammas confirms this.\u00a0“The team is well managed, like in Formula 1, by the manager and sponsor, and less by the skippers who are mere drivers. Sometimes, the manager stays and the skippers move on\u2026\u00a0but it works out, when you see the results.<\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0Charles Caudrelier said something similar at the finish, considering himself to be the pilot of a machine launched in 2017 and developed by a team which at cruising speed involves\u00a0twenty full-time members<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Perfect timing<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“As they prepared for the Route du Rhum, everything was timed right,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0added Gildas Morvan,\u00a0\u201cIt was perfect.<\/strong>\u00a0Charles clocked up miles with a crew, sailing double-handed with Franck, then sailing solo. They left him the time to adapt the boat to his way of doing things. They did what was required to ensure the boat was reliable, while at the same time trying to improve her.\u00a0A good clean job<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0Franck Cammas added:\u00a0“We had time to think ahead, as it was early on they had the idea of going down the road of having a flying boat, so\u00a0things were that much further developed\u00a0<\/strong>than in the teams who took up this concept of offshore flying later on.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Thinking ahead meant the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild was equipped with\u00a0new foils last summer<\/strong>, just a few months before the start of the Route du Rhum.\u00a0“I must admit I was a bit surprised with the timing, but it just goes to show that they really knew the boat well and that this change was not a technical risk for them, but rather something positive,”\u00a0<\/em>analysed Pierre-Marie Bourguinat.<\/p>\n

At the finish, the Guillaume Verdier designed boat remained a notch above her rivals, the latest Ultim boats,\u00a0SVR Lazartigue<\/em>,\u00a0Banque Populaire XI\u00a0<\/em>(even if the comparison quickly ended) and\u00a0Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>.\u00a0“I think Fran\u00e7ois\u2019s boat can be quicker, but overall, that is not the case,”<\/em>\u00a0explained Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry. \u201cGitana<\/em>\u00a0stated her case from the outset. She aims to be quicker and sailed quicker. If they want to sail higher, she sails higher, if they want to sail lower, she sails lower.\u00a0Everything seems so easy<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A skipper reaching maturity<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

A good team, a good boat and the third ingredient is a good pilot, which indeed was the case with Charles Caudrelier according to our experts.\u00a0“He practically made no mistakes. He controlled the race from the start,\u00a0gave it his all, as if it was a leg in the Figaro<\/strong>. This is the sign of a huge talent and a really mature sailor,”<\/em>\u00a0commented Pierre-Marie Bourguinat. A discreet sailor who has\u00a0one of the finest list of achievements in French sailing<\/strong>\u00a0with in particular a Solitaire du Figaro, three Transat Jacques Vabre, two Volvo Ocean Races and a Route du Rhum.<\/p>\n

“He isn\u2019t far behind Franck\u00a0<\/em>(Cammas),“<\/em>\u00a0admired Christian Le Pape, who welcomed young Caudrelier to the Port-la-For\u00eat centre more than twenty years ago, but would never have imagined such a career.\u00a0“There are the shooting stars, who have it all in place at the age of twenty, Franck, Fran\u00e7ois Gabart, Armel (Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h), Tom Laperche, and those, who do not appear exceptional at the start, but progress through hard work. Charles is one of them. He works hard and deserves what he gets.\u00a0Like a medieval knight<\/strong>, he has a sacred path taking him to victory.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The quality of a hard worker is also stressed by Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry:\u00a0“Charles needs to know that he has worked hard to have the right to win. He had the Route du Rhum on the back of his mind for a long time, but felt\u00a0he needed to work flat out<\/strong>\u00a0to find the means to achieve this. Before the start, he appeared relaxed, fully at ease and knowing what he was doing. That\u2019s something that doesn\u2019t come naturally to Charles.”<\/em><\/p>\n

That did not prevent him from posing lots of questions according to Franck Cammas.\u00a0“Charles doesn\u2019t like having doubts<\/strong>. It\u2019s an obsession with him. Even more than with me!\u00a0A few weeks before the start, he was still wondering about a change made to the foil. We had to tell him that it was done and there would be no more changes. At sea, it\u2019s worse than ashore!\u00a0I\u2019m not exaggerating when I say that with a lead of 100 miles over Fran\u00e7ois, when he lost three, it was dramatic for him. Sometimes, we even said he shouldn\u2019t have access to the AIS as\u00a0we needed to get him away from those thoughts<\/strong>. I think he knew more about Fran\u00e7ois\u2019s speeds than Fran\u00e7ois himself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Cammas was therefore impressed by\u00a0Charles Caudrelier\u2019s ability to\u00a0<\/strong>\u201ckeep his foot down from the start to the finish.<\/strong>\u00a0He never hesitated about going out and changing the sail, gybing or changing tack. We almost had to tell him to limit the number of manoeuvres so that he would have enough energy for the end of the race.”<\/em>\u00a0Pierre-Marie Bourguinat added:\u00a0“There is something which ever way you look at it tells you a lot about the gap he gradually managed to build, and that is\u00a0his ability to manoeuvre well<\/strong>. I talked to Yann Riou, the team\u2019s media man about it. He was with him in the 24 hr Ultim race in October, and was amazed by\u00a0the quality of his manoeuvres<\/strong>. When you know that there were more than 30 changes of tack and gybes in the race. If it takes five minutes less than your rival, averaging 25 knots out on the water, that makes quite some difference.”<\/em><\/p>\n

And now ?<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The season is far from over for Charles Caudrelier, as the\u00a0Maxi Edmond de Rothschild<\/em>\u00a0will be tackling the Jules Verne Trophy this winter<\/strong>. The record has been held since 2017 by\u00a0Idec Sport<\/em>\u00a0(40 days 23 hours), with according to Cyril Dardashti, the same crew as in the aborted attempt in early 2021 (Charles Caudrelier, Franck Cammas, Erwan Israel, Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re, David Boileau, Yann Riou) and a stand-by scheduled just before Christmas. The highlight of the 2023 season will be the\u00a0Arkea Ultim Challenge Brest<\/strong>, the first solo race around the world on an Ultim, while Cyril Dardashti confirmed that\u00a0a new boat is planned<\/strong>, once again with Guillaume Verdier.<\/p>\n

“We were the precursors of offshore flying, but there are areas we haven\u2019t yet explored. I\u2019m not criticising, but we can see that our rivals were inspired by our boat, so it\u2019s not that impressive.\u00a0We are going to do something unusual.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s part of the DNA of this project.”<\/em>\u00a0In which areas?\u00a0“I prefer to keep quiet about that for now,”<\/em>\u00a0smiled the Managing Director, before adding, concerning the timing,\u00a0\u201cIdeally, we would like to be in the water for the 2025 Jacques Vabre, but it\u2019s too soon to assert that.”<\/em>\u00a0That announcement led Gildas Morvan to conclude:\u00a0\u201cThey haven\u2019t finished one step before they are moving up to another.\u00a0It\u2019s all cleanly managed and smoothly done.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
