The second of the five solo qualifiers for the<\/em>\u00a0Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/em><\/strong>, the\u00a0<\/em>Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0enabled a certain number of sailors to take a step forward towards their qualification. What is the state of play today for the solo round the world contenders in relation to this important formality and the need to clock up miles? Which boats are still available?\u00a0<\/em>Tip & Shaft\u00a0looks at the situation.<\/em><\/p>\n

38 Imocas lined up at the start of the twelfth Route du Rhum – a record – ;\u00a034 crossed the finish line\u00a0<\/strong>in<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Pointe-\u00e0-Pitre and for most of them, this nearly meant their qualification for the 2024 Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u00a0The Notice of Race<\/a>\u00a0revealed just over a year ago, makes it a requirement for candidates to take part in at least two solo races aboard their Vend\u00e9e Globe boat\u00a0– “including one before the end of 2023 AND one in 2024”.<\/em>\u00a0They also need to finish at least one of these races and be ranked with a time that is not more than the winning time plus 50%\u00a0(for example, if the first boat takes 10 days, they have to finish in less than 15 days).<\/p>\n

The five races in question are the\u00a0Vend\u00e9e Arctique<\/strong>, raced last June, the\u00a0Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe<\/strong>,\u00a0the\u00a0Retour \u00e0 la Base<\/strong>\u00a0(the race back from the Transat Jacques Vabre in a year from now), the\u00a0Transat CIC<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0New York Vend\u00e9e<\/strong>\u00a0in May and June 2024. That means that sailors who have this year completed the Vend\u00e9e Arctique or the Route du Rhum within the time limit and on their Vend\u00e9e Globe boat merely have to start one of the two final races in 2024, without being required to finish the race, to complete their qualification.<\/p>\n

Today, there are\u00a0<\/strong>31 sailors in this category<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a014<\/strong>\u00a0of them completed the\u00a0Vend\u00e9e Arctique<\/strong>\u00a0in the time limit:\u00a0Benjamin Ferr\u00e9, Louis Burton, Guirec Soud\u00e9e, Alan Roura, Louis Duc, Damien Seguin, Benjamin Dutreux, Giancarlo Pedote, Pip Hare, S\u00e9bastien Marsset, Antoine Cornic, Romain Attanasio, Conrad Colman and Kojiro Shiraishi,\u00a017 did the same thing in the Route du Rhum<\/strong>\u00a0: J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou, Kevin Escoffier, Maxime Sorel, Paul Meilhat, Justine Mettraux, Isabelle Joschke, Tanguy Le Turquais, James Harayda, Arnaud Boissi\u00e8res, Yannick Bestaven, Nicolas Troussel, Boris Herrmann, Szalbocs We\u00f6res, Sam Davies, Jingkun Xu, Manu Cousin and Ollie Heer.<\/p>\n

Hardly any second-hand boats left on the market<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Out of the 34 sailors who managed to cross the finish in Pointe-\u00e0-Pitre,\u00a06 could not consider this to be a qualifying race.<\/strong>\u00a0The first two, Charlie\u00a0Dalin\u00a0and<\/strong>\u00a0Thomas\u00a0Ruyant<\/strong>, and Eric\u00a0Bellion<\/strong>, because they were not sailing aboard the Imoca boats they will have for the next Vend\u00e9e Globe \u2013 they will be getting new boats in the first half of 2023 while Fran\u00e7ois\u00a0Guiffant\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0boat,\u00a0Kattan<\/em>\u00a0is not eligible for the Vend\u00e9e Globe (as built before the 2004 Vend\u00e9e Globe). But also Rodolphe\u00a0Sepho\u00a0and<\/strong>\u00a0Nicolas\u00a0Rouger<\/strong>, whose race times were longer than the winning time (Thomas Ruyant \u2013 11 days, 17 hours and 36 minutes) plus 50%.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Fabrice Amedeo<\/strong>, who completed the Vend\u00e9e Arctique within the time limit, he was unlucky to lose his\u00a0Nexans-Art et Fen\u00eatres<\/em>\u00a0after a fire in the Rhum, which means his qualification process starts all over again.\u00a0“I am going to have to re-qualify aboard another boat. We\u2019re working hard to find one<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0he explained, pleased that his partners are continuing to support him in spite of the loss of his Imoca \u2013\u00a0which was insured \u2013\u00a0and because he is well placed in the number of miles clocked up\u00a0(see below)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What are the options? They are limited. According to our information, only Rodolphe Sepho\u2019s\u00a0Owen Clarke designed boat from 2007\u00a0<\/strong>is for sale\u00a0<\/strong>(we were unable to contact him), and the former\u00a0<\/strong>Ark\u00e9a Paprec<\/strong><\/em>, aboard which S\u00e9bastien Simon took part in the last Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u00a0“The boat is still up for sale. She has had a complete refit, the paint has been removed and she is ready to sail within two weeks,”<\/em>\u00a0confirmed Romain M\u00e9nard, head of the Paprec Ark\u00e9a Sailing Team.<\/p>\n

Another six or seven new boats expected<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Thomas Ruyant\u2019s current\u00a0LinkedOut\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>already has a new skipper, whose name is to be announced shortly for a project which will be run by the TR Racing team:\u00a0“<\/em>Advens 1\u00a0will be at the start of the next Vend\u00e9e Globe. She has not been chartered or sold,”<\/em>\u00a0explained Thomas Gav\u00e9riaux, MD of TR Racing.\u00a0Hubert<\/strong><\/em>,<\/strong>\u00a0Jean Le Cam\u2019s boat aboard which Eric Bellion raced this season,\u00a0“is currently being bought”\u00a0<\/em>by Violette Dorange\u2019s team, according to her father, Arnaud, contacted by\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>. There is some uncertainty about\u00a0Malama<\/strong><\/em>, the 11th Hour Racing Team\u2019s Verdier designed boat launched in August 2021.\u00a0“We haven\u2019t finalised any decisions on what the plans will be for the team or the boat after The Ocean Race,”<\/em>\u00a0the American team told us.<\/p>\n

If he finds what he is looking for, Fabrice Amedeo\u00a0will have to compete in the<\/strong>\u00a0Retour \u00e0 la Base\u00a0<\/strong>in a year from now to qualify,\u00a0even if he does not complete the race\u00a0\u2013 he will then have a second chance in the Transat CIC and\/or the New York Vend\u00e9e.\u00a0<\/em>That is the case for all those who have not yet carried out a qualifying race aboard their\u00a0<\/em>Vend\u00e9e Globe boat, particularly those who are getting\u00a0a new<\/strong>\u00a0Imoca,\u00a0<\/strong>that is to say,<\/strong>\u00a0Thomas Ruyant, Charlie Dalin, Yoann Richomme, Eric Bellion, Jean Le Cam and the future owner of the third Manuard designed boat being built at Black Pepper (after the current\u00a0Bureau Vall\u00e9e<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Initiatives C\u0153ur<\/em>), to be launched next summer.\u00a0“We began work on her last summer starting with a modification of the mould with a new geometry for the hull,”<\/em>\u00a0confirmed the head of the yard, Michel de Franssu, who does not wish to reveal the identity of the purchaser.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0J\u00f6rg Riechers<\/strong>,\u00a0he says\u00a0that his\u00a0<\/strong>construction project funded by Alva Yachts is still on the cards:\u00a0“We got behind schedule, but it is due to start in February at Persico after Eric Bellion\u2019s boat, so will be a commando operation.”\u00a0<\/em>What will the German do if his boat is not ready for the start of the Retour \u00e0 la Base in November 2023, which would prevent him from qualifying? He has not excluded the possibility of requesting a waiver from the Notice of Race.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

7 sailors are no longer concerned
\nby the selection process<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Although a compulsory step on the way to the Vend\u00e9e Globe, qualifying does not necessarily mean that everyone will be competing. If there are\u00a0more than forty contenders<\/strong>, which is the maximum limit determined by the organiser for the 2024 race \u2013 applications need to be in by\u00a02nd\u00a0October 2023\u00a0-,\u00a0the\u00a0SAEM Vend\u00e9e will have to sort them out by taking into account the number of miles sailed<\/strong>\u00a0in the twelve\u00a0Imoca Globe Series<\/a>\u00a0races listed from the 2021 Transat Jacques Vabre to the 2024 New York Vend\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

According to the Notice of Race, this selection process will not concern\u00a0“the<\/em>\u00a0wild card<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0open to the organising authority” \u2013\u00a0<\/em>that many people believe will go to Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer \u2013\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0“first<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>thirteen new boats to compete in a qualifying race.<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0So far, the question of miles sailed does not concern J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou, Kevin Escoffier, Maxime Sorel, Paul Meilhat, Yannick Bestaven, Boris Herrmann and Sam Davies, who lined up at the start of the Route du Rhum aboard boats launched this year. There are six other places left in this list that can avoid the selection process out of a total of fifteen new boats (including\u00a0Malama<\/em>\u00a0and J\u00f6rg Riechers’ one).<\/p>\n

So that means\u00a026 tickets will be issued based on the number of miles<\/strong>. Following the Route du Rhum, the Imoca class updated\u00a0its table of miles sailed<\/a>. A certain number can feel relaxed about this matter, in particular Giancarlo Pedote, Isabelle Joschke and Manu Cousin, who have taken part in all the races referred to. Others are likely to be more worried, like\u00a0Louis Burton, currently 29th, Kojiro Shiraishi, 47th and Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer<\/strong>, who has not sailed any miles at all, and is not in the Imoca table.<\/p>\n

It is not certain whether this rule will be applied, as\u00a0it only comes into play when there are more than forty contenders<\/strong>, which at the moment is not certain, as several sailors have not yet found their entire budget.\u00a0“Today, there are only three who have done all the miles after a year, which means there have been a number of twists and turns and it is not as straightforward as that,”<\/em>\u00a0explained the president of the Imoca class, Antoine Mermod, who when asked about the number of boats he expects to see at the\u00a0start on 10th November 2024, replied:\u00a0“I don\u2019t think there will be 45, nor 35. Somewhere\u00a0between\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>38 and 42 would seem to be a good number<\/em><\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n
