During the Paris boat show, the French Sailing Federation and the Figaro Beneteau class\u00a0have announced<\/a>\u00a0that the\u00a0<\/em>Tour\u00a0Voile will be back in 2023, in Figaro 3,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>with a shorter format than historically, one that will include the Tour de Bretagne<\/em>. Tip & Shaft\u00a0tells you more about this latest guise.<\/em><\/p>\n

A little less than a year after the withdrawal of Normandie Ev\u00e9n\u00e9ments (see our article<\/em><\/a>), which\u00a0organized only\u00a0one edition, in 2021, the Tour Voile will be\u00a0back next July on a new class, the Figaro Beneteau 3<\/strong>. The announcement was made official during the prize giving ceremony of the France Elite offshore racing championship by the president of the Figaro Beneteau class,\u00a0Jean-Bernard Le Boucher<\/strong>, and that of the French Sailing Federation,\u00a0Jean-Luc Den\u00e9chau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“There was a real desire within the Federation to deliver\u00a0a competition that could\u00a0<\/em>train young people in offshore racing<\/em><\/strong>, explains\u00a0<\/em>Den\u00e9chau<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cWe worked with the Figaro class on a project with two key words: training and financial accessibility\u00a0.”\u00a0<\/em>Hence the choice of the Figaro 3 \u2013 the agreement with the class covers three years – and is so far preferred, for example, to the future\u00a0Sun Fast 30 One Design<\/a>\u00a0(ex Class30), which its promoters, including the UNCL, would have seen as the class for the Tour in the medium term.<\/p>\n

“We live in a world that has changed economically,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0continues the president of the FFV.\u00a0\u201cSo in the end we wanted to\u00a0<\/em>use existing boats<\/em><\/strong>, I don’t want our\u00a0clubs to have to make significant investments out of their reach to train their young people in offshore racing.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The president of the UNCL, now joined with the Yacht Club de France, G\u00e9ry Trenteseaux are not taking umbrage:\u00a0“I met Jean-Luc Den\u00e9chau and Corinne Migraine (vice-president<\/em>)\u00a0at the beginning of September about this and they were clear, so there is no disappointment. And\u00a0<\/em>anyway, our one design would not be available<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in sufficient quantities in 2023.”<\/em><\/p>\n

After agreeing with the Figaro class, the FFVoile approached Amaury Sport Organisation, owner of the Tour Voile since 2012, which gave up organizing it at the end of 2020, to take on the license. What ASO\u00a0accepted,\u00a0granting the Tour Voile brand to the federation for a period of three years\u00a0<\/strong>on the\u00a0model of a kind of lease-management, as already previously used with Normandie Ev\u00e9nements.<\/p>\n

Three organizers solicited<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This new formula Tour will therefore be contested during the first fortnight of July with\u00a0a crew of four \u2013 including two young people under 26 years old and one\u00a0woman, who will be able to alternate\u00a0on the different stages \u2013 and\u00a0in two parts.<\/strong>\u00a0The first will take\u00a0the route\u00a0of the\u00a0Tour de Bretagne \u00e0 la voile<\/a>, which will run two separate classifications, before, according to Jean-Luc Den\u00e9chau\u00a0“one big stage between Quiberon and a city located further south.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Organizer of the Tour de Bretagne, the\u00a0Brittany sailing league, will be in charge of the first part of the Tour Voile.\u00a0A private provider will take care of the second part<\/strong>.\u00a0“We launched a targeted consultation with three organizers,”<\/em>\u00a0confirms Jean-Bernard Le Boucher. According to our information, these are\u00a0Upswing Prod<\/strong>, which organizes the Ocean Fifty Pro Sailing Tour,\u00a0Ultim Sailing<\/strong>, which ran in May the new race in the Figaro, the Troph\u00e9e Banque Populaire Grand Ouest, and\u00a0Aloha Attitude<\/strong>, a Brest company specializing in events and project management (including that of Eric P\u00e9ron).<\/p>\n

When asked, these organizers acknowledged they are looking at it.\u00a0“We have not yet studied it in all its components”,<\/em>\u00a0simply replied Julien Mauriat for Upswing Prod;\u00a0“We find the subject fascinating”,<\/em>\u00a0commented Emmanuel Bachellerie\u00a0for Ultim Sailing, while Christophe Boutet, founder of Aloha Attitude, added :\u00a0“<\/em>The project is interesting, but the roadmap is<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0not easy to keep, because the event arrives quickly and it is partly based on an already existing event, it will not necessarily be easy to find its place, But we are studying the file.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A dozen crews are hoped<\/span><\/h2>\n

The lucky winner will be known\u00a0“in the coming weeks”,<\/em>\u00a0according to Jean-Bernard Le Boucher, then instructs all the protagonists to attract the maximum number of crews. “For this first, we\u00a0<\/em>are counting on a dozen entries<\/em><\/strong>, we\u00a0want in particular to help the leagues to take an interest,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Jean-Luc Den\u00e9chau who evokes a budget, to participate in the Tour Voile, of\u00a0“<\/em>15,000 to 20,000 euros<\/em><\/strong>“.<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>, C\u00e9dric Chateau, sporting director\u00a0of the Normandy league<\/strong>, very involved for years in the training of young crews, is interested, even if he believes that the budget will probably be higher.\u00a0“We<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>would like to set up one or two teams<\/em><\/strong>, it will depend on the means we manage to find. As the goal will not only be to participate, but to progress, I think it will require a little training upstream, so coaching. I have more the impression that we will be on a budget of the order of 40,000 to 50,000 euros. But the\u00a0<\/em>Tour Voile brand is an asset<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to find private partners.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Jean-Bernard Le Boucher says\u00a0“It is a very interesting model economically, which allows to start in Figaro without having enormous means”.<\/em>\u00a0And can allow the class, which has included the Tour Voile\u00a0on the calendar<\/a>\u00a0of its Academy, launched in 2022, to\u00a0attract new sailors<\/strong>, in a context of stagnation in the number of registered for its races.\u00a0“I think the right way to reinvigorate the class and have more participants in three to four years time on our big solo and doubles events is to go and get young people and get them racing.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
