The beautiful people convened last Thursday at the Cit\u00e9 de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris for a\u00a0press conference to present the Orient Express Team challenge<\/a>\u00a0which will represent France at the\u00a037th America’s Cup<\/strong>\u00a0in September 2024 in Barcelona. Tip & Shaft tells us the story of how this project which has been initiated by\u00a0St\u00e9phane Kandler<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Bruno Dubois<\/strong>\u00a0and supported by the Accor group, has achieved lift off. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

In fact it all started during the 36th America’s Cup. In front of his television,\u00a0St\u00e9phane Kandler<\/strong>\u00a0who had launched K-Challenge in 2001 which went in to be a challenger at the\u00a02007 America’s Cup (under the name of ‘Areva Challenge), found it hard to contain his\u00a0excitement:\u00a0“I said to myself then while watching the racing that\u00a0we had the potential in France<\/strong>\u00a0and above all the means to do at least as well as Team New Zealand.”<\/em><\/p>\n

His activity then on social networks aroused interest\u00a0and in particular that of\u00a0Bruno Dubois<\/strong>, team manager of the last French challenge in 2017, Groupama Team France and now at the head of the French SailGP team.\u00a0\u201cWe know each other well. I know St\u00e9phane because I had previously worked with him on several projects, notably within the Areva Challenge in 2007. I called him and told him that it had been a long time since I had seen him so excited by the Cup.\u00a0He said he wanted to get back into it<\/strong>. As it was also my feeling\u00a0we started discussing the project.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the summer of 2021, St\u00e9phane Kandler launched but with a non negotiable\u00a0<\/strong>“sine qua non condition”<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>that of\u00a0“being sure to have a good boat”.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0He recalls:\u00a0“I called Team New Zealand, with whom I had kept good contacts, to find out if they would agree to help us. Immediately they were very receptive. I also spoke a lot with Guillaume Verdier [member of the Kiwis design team, editor’s note] whom I had worked on the Cup in 2007. He gave me his vision of things and\u00a0put me in contact with Benjamin Muyl.<\/strong>”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The team gets to work in March 2022<\/span><\/h2>\n

Muyl has collaborated on numerous projects with Guillaume Verdier. He had just finished four years with the British\u00a0challenge Ineos Team UK. He reports:\u00a0“I had just finished my fifth Cup,\u00a0I don’t didn’t really want to do it again unless it was a French project.<\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0In the Autumn\u00a0Franck Cammas<\/strong>, who had shown interest, was also approached as was\u00a0Dimitri Despierres<\/strong>, an engineer with Cup experience who had then just resigned from\u00a0American Magic. He was offered a position as technical director. On the sailing side,\u00a0Bruno Dubois raised the subject a few months later with\u00a0Quentin Delapierre<\/strong>, who took the helm of the F50 of the French SailGP team.<\/p>\n

But of course the major issue,\u00a0the biggest of all was funding<\/strong>\u00a0St\u00e9phane Kandler was actively looking for partners. In early 2022, he began\u00a0“advanced discussions with a private investor who has agreed to advance us the funds until we find the partners”<\/em>. Kandler and Dubois then\u00a0officially launched\u00a0K-Challenge Team France<\/strong>, in\u00a0which they are co-owners with\u00a0equal shares. It was\u00a0set up at the beginning of March around Benjamin Muyl, Franck Cammas, Dimitri Despierres,, Francis Hueber, that is a team of\u00a0around twenty people<\/strong>\u00a0whose salaries are guaranteed, pending the money promised by the investor, by St\u00e9phane Kandler’s own funds and the arrival of a first partner,\u00a0K-Way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The one key priority was\u00a0to acquire the design package\u00a0of the AC75 from Team New Zealand<\/strong>.\u00a0“We considered everything, including designing our boat ourselves, but as time passed and funding was slow to arrive,\u00a0this solution became obvious<\/strong>,”\u00a0<\/em>says Benjamin Muyl.\u00a0“Especially since they had just won two cups in a row!”\u00a0<\/em>The contract with the Kiwis was signed at the end of June, at the same time as the French challenge was officially submitted to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, the Defenders Team New Zealand\u2019s yacht club.<\/p>\n

An investor leaves, a partner arrives<\/span><\/h2>\n

But barely two weeks later, the rug was pulled from under them when when\u00a0the invesor\u00a0announced to St\u00e9phane Kandler that he was pulling out!\u00a0<\/strong>“We were contractually committed to a lot of people, but we didn’t have enough to pay them, we had to ask them to last for two, three or four months,\u00a0it was really tough<\/strong>. I asked myself a lot of questions but I hadn’t completely lost hope\u00a0because I knew St\u00e9phane, I knew he wouldn’t let go”,\u00a0<\/em>says Dubois. The two men must therefore resolve to end the\u00a0contracts at the end of September.\u00a0Several of them left the team<\/strong>, some for other challenges, such as Dimitri Despierres, Laurent Chatillon and Antoine Connan (American Magic) or Sebastian Zarate (Ineos Britannia).<\/p>\n

A month later, a new twist, as\u00a0St\u00e9phane Kandler explains:\u00a0\u201cOlivier P\u00e9cout<\/a>, who I worked to convince partners, had the opportunity to speak\u00a0with S\u00e9bastien Bazin. And so he put me in touch.”<\/em>\u00a0S\u00e9bastien, who is no more than the CEO of the Accor group, a global hotel giant, continues: “We were with Olivier P\u00e9cout on the train to Saint-Malo to go to the Route du Rhum, he talked about the America’s Cup project, I said to him:\u00a0<\/em>\u00ab Introduce me to St\u00e9phane. \u00bb”<\/p>\n

Bazin, who has\u00a0already been approached before the 35th Cup by the Franck Cammas-Michel Desjoyeaux-Olivier de Kersauson trio –\u00a0“it was not the right time”<\/em>\u00a0-, sees this as\u00a0\u2018right place right time\u2019 for the partnership<\/strong>, especially as\u00a0a few months earlier, the group had placed an order with Chantiers de l’Atlantique, under\u00a0their Orient Express brand<\/a>, for\u00a0two giant luxury sailing cruise liners<\/a>\u00a0(Silenseas), which will be delivered in 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n

“Having this brand, Orient Express, it becomes legitimate in the world of the sea and with these projects, there is the international side of the America’s Cup, its return to Europe, the opening up of the Cup to women and young people”<\/em>\u00a0convinced the boss of the Accor group\u00a0to give his go ahead, just a month after hearing about the project<\/strong>\u00a0on the train to Saint-Malo.\u00a0“I was at the Yacht Racing Forum in Malta (end of November) when St\u00e9phane called me asking me if I was available the next day for a video meeting with him and S\u00e9bastien Bazin.\u00a0A week later we met in Paris and it was good!\u00a0It was done very simply, a little old style,<\/strong>”\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>smiles Bruno Dubois.<\/p>\n

SailGP France also supported by Accor<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The registration fees finally paid,\u00a0the Orient Express Team<\/strong>\u00a0– the official name of the challenge which is under the flag of the\u00a0Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nautique de Saint-Tropez – is officially accepted by the defender, while the phones start to heat up again\u00a0to reconstitute a team<\/strong>. That team under the Kandler-Dubois duo, has \u00a0Benjamin Muyl, head of the design team, Franck Cammas, in charge of performance, and Quentin Delapierre, confirmed as skipper.\u00a0Louis Viat<\/strong>\u00a0has been recruited as head of operations,\u00a0Antoine Carraz<\/strong>, who comes from MerConcept, as technical director (he will begin at the end of February),\u00a0Thierry Douillard<\/strong>\u00a0as\u00a0coach, the long-term objective being to set up a team of\u00a0around 70 people<\/strong>, according to St\u00e9phane Kandler.<\/p>\n

There is no hanging around waiting for\u00a0the construction of the future AC75. It will begin in May<\/strong>, entrusted to\u00a0Multiplast<\/strong>\u00a0(hull),\u00a0CDK Technologies<\/strong>\u00a0(masts), while\u00a0MerConcept<\/strong>\u00a0will be called in and the sails will be manufactured by\u00a0North Sails.\u00a0<\/strong>This unique AC75 will be launched in May 2024, until then the French team hopes to charter\u00a0a boat from the last Cup to sail in the winter of 2023-2024. They will also receive their\u00a0AC40 next summer<\/strong>, on which they\u00a0can start training and that will be the boat\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Women’s and Youth America’s Cup<\/strong>, two competitions in which each registered challenge must participate.<\/p>\n

These two programs are delegated to the\u00a0Team France association<\/strong>, the women’s challenge will revolve around Alo\u00efse Retornaz, 470 bronze medalist in Tokyo, and Paola Amar, also a 470 specialist. Announcements are expected very soon on\u00a0the participation of crews under the Orient Express Team banner in flying circuits,<\/strong>\u00a0ETF26 Series, GC32 Racing Tour or 69F Cup.\u00a0Quentin Delapierre will continue to lead the French SailGP team now also supported by the Accor group under the brand of its loyalty program, All.com.\u00a0“With the arrival of Accor, which is a tier 2 partner on this project, and others like ICM.com, we have about\u00a0half of the team’s sponsorship<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Bruno Dubois.<\/p>\n

So what is\u00a0the budget of the Cup project?<\/strong>\u00a0“We are not talking about figures.”<\/em>\u00a0says Dubois. Also questioned on the subject, S\u00e9bastien Bazin is also evasive:\u00a0“We are dropping\u00a0the partnership with PSG and it is far less than\u00a0that!”<\/em>\u00a0Does he intend to invest\u00a0long term, one of the major handicaps for French projects over the past thirty years? \u00a0“If we start to go a long way together there is no reason to stop,”<\/em>\u00a0replies the boss of the Accor group.<\/p>\n
