{"id":55039,"date":"2023-06-20T11:07:05","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T09:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tipandshaft.com\/?p=55039"},"modified":"2023-06-20T11:07:05","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T09:07:05","slug":"how-alexia-barrier-launched-her-famous-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sailorz.com\/en\/trophee-jules-verne-2\/how-alexia-barrier-launched-her-famous-project\/","title":{"rendered":"How Alexia Barrier launched her Famous Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Last Tuesday at the Paris headquarters of Unesco Alexia Barrier officially launched her Famous Project, outlining\u00a0<strong>her 100% female Jules Verne Trophy challenge<\/strong>\u00a0which will be aboard\u00a0<\/em>Idec Sport<em>, supported by the CIC and the Idec Group.\u00a0<\/em>Tip &amp; Shaft<em>\u00a0tells you how the sailor managed to set up this\u00a0<\/em>Famous Project.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the last Vend\u00e9e Globe and her 24th place, Alexia Barrier was planning a second participation with the idea of acquiring a more competitive boat.\u00a0<em>&#8220;But my partner decided to stop, a little suddenly, but the loss of this sponsor\u00a0<strong>opened an opportunity to realign myself towards what I really wanted to do: Ultim<\/strong>&#8220;<\/em>, she tells\u00a0<em>Tip &amp; Shaft<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Barrier decided to launch her Jules Verne Trophy project in January 2022 with the aim of setting up a 100% female crew.\u00a0<em>\u201cOpportunities to sail this type of project are almost non-existent for women.\u00a0<strong>The Jules Verne is even more elitist than the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she notes. Only a few women have attempted the challenge,\u00a0<strong>Tracy Edwards<\/strong>\u00a0with the all-female crew in 1998 on Royal &amp; Sun Alliance,\u00a0<strong>Ellen MacArthur<\/strong>\u00a0four years later on Kingfisher 2, and Dona Bertarelli on the former\u00a0<strong>Spindrift 2<\/strong>\u00a0and she is the only woman to having completed the course to date but without breaking the round the world record.<\/p>\n<p>Alexia Barrier gets\u00a0in touch with Dee Caffari, Marie Tabarly and Marie Riou and all say\u00a0they are ready to join the project. During 2022 the project takes shape little by little even if there is a lack of partners to fund it.\u00a0<em>&#8220;But, strictly speaking at first, I did not start looking for sponsors instead I<strong>\u00a0went to conferences at which I met many entrepreneurs<\/strong>&#8220;<\/em>, explains Barrier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The bank CIC are attracted<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is in April 2022 in Montpellier, during one of these conferences, that\u00a0<strong>Daniel Baal, director general of the CIC<\/strong>, in the audience,\u00a0<strong>is heavily attracted to the project.\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u201cIt immediately spoke to me. A few days after the conference, I got back in touch with Alexia to work out the basics of a partnership. Everything happened really fast. I appreciated her personality, her ability to mobilize, her charisma and her commitment,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Baal tells\u00a0<em>Tip &amp; Shaft<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It is one more element in the banking group\u2019s support of sailing. They are title partner of the Transat CIC and the CIC Normandy Channel Race, main partner of the Route du Rhum and also via its parent company, Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel, they are title sponsors of Ian Lipinski in Class40.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>This new commitment reinforces our position in the world of sailing<\/strong>\u00a0now also with a different positioning,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0continues Daniel Baal.\u00a0<em>\u201cWe want to support a sporting and societal project which has a strong resonance with our mission-driven company\u2019s ambitions. Alexia leads a real entrepreneurial adventure and we like that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Idec has made their trimaran available<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to support from CIC, Alexia Barrier takes a major step forward by chartering the MOD70, Mana, which enables\u00a0her to start sailing. At the same time, she is continuing to search for an Ultime and looking forward to the start of the next Route du Rhum,\u00a0<strong>she is looking at the possibility of chartering or purchasing Francis Joyon\u2019s Idec Sport trimaran<\/strong>. Her project has won over Patrice Lafargue, chairman of the Idec Group.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNothing was planned,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains the latterer.\u00a0<em>\u201c<strong>It happened after a meeting with Alexia, who is really enthusiastic<\/strong>. And for me, enthusiastic people are my thing! When Alexia offered to buy the boat, even before she was for sale and after talking about her challenge, I decided to join her and her team\u00a0<strong>by making the maxi-trimaran, Idec Sport available to them for three years.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Why the decision to join up with her rather than stay with Francis Joyon, whom Patrice Lafargue has supported since the start of the Century?\u00a0<em>\u201cIn just over twenty years, with Francis we wrote one of the finest chapters in the history of ocean racing. In order to deal with financial and ecological pressures, I didn\u2019t want to sign up for a new boat.\u00a0<strong>Alexia\u2019s all-woman project may offer our boat a future.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The boat\u2019s name is up for grabs\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As for CIC and the Idec Group, a third partner will be announced in September. So far, Alexia Barrier has found\u00a0<strong>half of the required funding, which she estimates to be around 3 million euros per year<\/strong>\u00a0for three years (until the end of 2025). She still has to find 4.5 million euros, with the name for the boat still available.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, she has brought in more members to her crew with a very international line-up at the heart, including alongside Dee Caffari (co-skipper), Marie Riou and Marie Tabarly, Helena Darvelid, Sara Hastreiter, Elodie-Jane Mettraux and Joan Mulloy.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt is highly likely they will make up the final crew,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0stressed the skipper, who would like to strengthen her team in the coming months, in particular by identifying young talent, especially seeing\u00a0<strong>the project now involves two boats<\/strong>, so two crews.\u00a0<em>\u201cWe have had lots of applications from women from around the world. To ensure more women become involved in the project, we will have a first crew and a reserve crew.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To manage these crews and step up the multihull learning process, Alexia Barrier has called upon the services of<strong>\u00a0two British sailors<\/strong>\u00a0who have a pivotal role in the project:\u00a0<strong>Jonny Malbon,<\/strong>\u00a0Team Director and\u00a0<strong>Brian Thompson\u00a0<\/strong>as coach. How will things be organised around the two boats? Alexia Barrier:\u00a0<em>\u201cThe two boats will be out sailing at the same time. They will be based in the Mediterranean in La Grande Motte, even if will still have a base in La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer for Idec Sport. It is easier to get things set up for the MOD70 and her maintenance is less expensive. She enables us to have races between some exceptional sailors on short courses. While\u00a0<strong>with the Ultim, we will be more in long-distance mode<\/strong>\u00a0and we may set out to tackle records like Los Angeles-Honolulu.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The start of the stand-by for the Jules Verne Trophy is scheduled for October 2025.\u00a0<em>\u201cThe aim is to smash the outright record\u00a0<\/em>[40 days 23 hours set by the very same boat, Idec Sport \u2013 editor\u2019s note]<em>, but also\u00a0<strong>to set a first women\u2019s crew record<\/strong>\u00a0around the world, which does not currently exist as a record.
