The 2023 edition of\u00a0<\/i>The Ocean Race<\/i><\/b> finished in Genova with <\/i>victory for the US team\u00a0<\/i>11th Hour Racing Team<\/b>\u00a0ahead of\u00a0<\/i>Holcim-PRB\u00a0and\u00a0<\/i>Team Malizia. Tip & Shaft now examines the event with some proper experts with an insider\u2019s view: event co-owner\u00a0<\/i>Johan Sal\u00e9n<\/i><\/b>, Imoca class president\u00a0<\/i>Antoine Mermod<\/i><\/b>, designers\u00a0<\/i>Guillaume Verdier<\/i><\/b>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<\/i>Quentin Lucet<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(VPLP Design), sailor\u00a0<\/i>Franck Cammas<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and journalists\u00a0<\/i>Jacques Guyader\u00a0<\/i><\/b>(Ouest-France) and\u00a0<\/i>St\u00e9fan L’Hermitte<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(L’\u00c9quipe).<\/i><\/p>\n

11th\u00a0Hour Racing\u2019s win was announced Thursday morning after\u00a0the decisions by the race\u2019s international jury<\/b>. The IJ had received a request for redress from\u00a011th Hour Racing Team<\/i>\u00a0who were forced to retire from the seventh, final stage after\u00a0their Imoca was hit<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Guyot Environnement-Team Europe<\/i>\u00a0when they were on starboard tack just after the start in The Hague.\u00a0The request was accepted by the jury<\/b>\u00a0who awarded four points to\u00a011th Hour Racing Team<\/i>\u00a0who then won with a three-points margin over\u00a0Holcim-PRB<\/i>\u00a0and five points over third placed\u00a0Team Malizia.<\/i><\/p>\n

Holcim-PRB\u00a0<\/i>team had also filed\u00a0a protest<\/span><\/a>\u00a0against the American team, as they said they believed that\u00a011th\u00a0Hour<\/i>\u00a0had not done everything to avoid the collision. Was this protest, which was rejected by the jury, poor sportsmanship?\u00a0\u00a0\u201cNo,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0answers Antoine Mermod.\u00a0\u201cThe goal of the teams is to win the race and for that you have to know how to use the rules, it’s part of the game, that’s what they tried to do.\u201d\u00a0Holcim-PRB<\/i>\u00a0did not choose to appeal the decision. Of the final outcome Johan Sal\u00e9n says:\u00a0“<\/i>It is the first time in the history of the race that it finishes like this<\/i><\/b>. But we know this can happen in sailing, it created a kind of different suspense compared to the previous races!\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

This 2023 edition was the\u00a0first to be raced in Imocas<\/b>, a change of class which, according to our experts, has been successful, even if there were only five boats at the start.\u00a0\u201cThe results are positive<\/i>, summarizes Quentin Lucet, architect at VPLP Design, who designed\u00a0Malizia<\/i>.\u00a0The boats all managed to complete the circumnavigation of the globe having been sailed hard, even if we consider the two dismastings due to mechanical parts that failed. The big foilers had not been able to fulfil their potential on the last Vend\u00e9e Globe but\u00a0<\/i>The Ocean Race made it possible to validate the concepts of the new generation.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/b>For Franck Cammas,\u00a0“Racing with a crew made it possible to discover new ways of sailing with the big foils,\u00a0<\/i>hence the very good averages and a 24-hour record which is brilliant<\/i><\/b>, because 20 miles more than Comanche, a 100-foot boat, had to be done!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThe winners are the ones who knew the race best\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

In the end, then, the victory went to\u00a011th Hour Racing Team<\/i>\u00a0who\u00a0finished on the podium of all the stages, winning three out of seven<\/b>. But that is not really too much of a surprise in that the American crew, part of which had competed in the two previous editions in the VO65s, was widely considered as the favorite\u00a0for a race which\u00a0was always the focal point, the pinnacle event for the the project, and they started long before all the others<\/b>.\u00a0\u201cThe Ocean Race is a very tough race, I think the teams that had never raced it did not expect it to be so tough. The winner are the ones who knew the race best\u201d<\/i>, summarizes Sal\u00e9n.<\/p>\n

Winner of the 2011-12 edition as skipper of\u00a0Groupama 4<\/i>, Franck Cammas, who raced the sixth leg aboard the American Imoca, adds:\u00a0“The Ocean Race is a long, hard endurance race, during which you have to try to keep the team together, that’s what they did well.\u00a0<\/i>They had their share of problems, however, but they were able to rectify them<\/i><\/b>. Even when things weren’t going well, you could feel that the mindset remained positive, them knowing they were going to perform. They also relied on\u00a0<\/i>a very stable, experienced core team<\/i><\/b>\u00a0with Charlie Enright and Simon Fisher, who certainly has\u00a0the most experience on the race as offshore navigator.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Asked about the qualities of the winning boat which he has designed as well as\u00a0Holcim-PRB<\/i>,\u00a0Biotherm<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Guyot Environnement-Team Europe<\/i>\u00a0(along with VPLP),\u00a0Guillaume Verdier\u00a0responds:\u00a0\u201cWhere Holcim-PRB is a very stiff boat, super good at reaching but it\u2019s a little more specifically type formed,\u00a0<\/i>11th Hour Racing\u00a0is more homogeneous<\/i><\/b>.”<\/i>\u00a0That according to Franck Cammas, constitutes its great strength compared to his competitors: \u201cThe others had weak points that were a bit too prohibitive to hope to win the race<\/i><\/b>. Malizia,\u00a0for example, has a lot of good qualities downwind in the bigger seas, thanks to its hull which has rocker in the stern which allows the bow to lift well when needed, but it is less good upwind and downwind when there is not too much wind.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

What does Malizia\u2019s architect Quentin Lucet think?\u00a0\u201cMalizia won the stage in the Big South and the last leg in light airs. They go well in these conditions,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0he believes.\u00a0\u201cThere are other areas where there is room for improvement, in particular medium winds. The design of the hull works very well,\u00a0<\/i>we have to work on the intermediate phases where the foil is more important.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Moderate media interest in France<\/span><\/h2>\n

If there are plenty of lessons for the design teams, on their side the organizers will soon communicate about the media and popular following of an event that journalist Jacques Guyader has covered almost in its entirety, only missing the stopover in Newport. For him,\u00a0the best stopover prize goes to Itajai<\/b>:\u00a0“The village was full of people every day, I did not expect that, because I made many Transatlantic finishes into Salvador de Bahia where there was no one . It must be said that the state of Santa Catarina had put in a lot of resources in to bring people into the fun, festive village.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

And what about the media?\u00a0\u201cOutside France the race was very popular,\u00a0<\/i>particularly in Germany with the real phenomenon that is Boris<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(Herrmann) who is a big star, he is on the front page of the television news of the major national channels,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0notes Imoca\u2019s president Mermod.\u00a0\u201c\u00a0<\/i>In France, it didn’t work as well as we had hoped<\/i><\/b>, not in terms of social networks, but more in terms of the “traditional” press, it’s a bit of a disappointment. We have not managed to get the narrative of The Ocean Race to find its place.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Journalist at\u00a0L’\u00c9quipe<\/i>, which really only gave a limited space to the race, St\u00e9fan L’Hermitte gives something of an explanation:\u00a0“The Ocean Race is undoubtedly a fantastic race, very tough, even if the number of boats\u00a0was reduced this year, but\u00a0<\/i>it is not very understandable for our readers<\/i><\/b>\u00a0who are interested in sailing really twice in four years, they follow the Route du Rhum and the Vend\u00e9e Globe. Sailing is one of the niche sports that most people will never make the effort to learn and understand, so the niche must be wide open to make it easier.\u201c\u00a0<\/i>Jacques Guyader nevertheless considers that the content, the narrative is strong:\u00a0\u201cWhat we are looking for is to tell stories. And for me,\u00a0<\/i>over the five months, I had quite a few in my net<\/i><\/b>, beautiful and less beautiful.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

The next edition is in sight<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Guyader refers in particular to\u00a0\u201cthe Kevin Escoffier affair\u201d which he says,<\/b>\u00a0\u201cmade people really talk in France\u201d<\/i><\/b>, which Johan Sal\u00e9n confirms. It did, however, lead some of the protagonists in the race to react concretely, as Antoine Mermod points out:\u00a0“Now that we have a bit of perspective, we are\u00a0<\/i>setting up a unit within the class<\/i><\/b>\u00a0to quickly deal with problems of this type, by making it easier for potential victims to speak out and to support them. ”\u00a0<\/i>Within the Ocean Race organization, this process had already been initiated, Sal\u00e9n assures us.\u00a0“<\/i>Three months ago we started working to create a position of safeguarding officer<\/i><\/b>\u00a0responsible for ensuring that behaviors are proper and to deal with any problems, we will continue with this initiative.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Over the coming months the organizers will work to draw up the main aspects of the next edition to be contested in four years time, but also those for\u00a0the second edition of The Ocean Race Europe, in the summer of 2025<\/b>. These two races which will be run\u00a0exclusively in Imoca<\/b>. Johan Sal\u00e9n hopes to unveil the course for the European edition\u00a0“early next year”<\/i>\u00a0–\u00a0“there could be one or two stopovers in France”<\/i>\u00a0-, and\u00a0“the following spring”<\/i>\u00a0for The Ocean Race. Salen suggests, \u201cThe idea is to keep the duration roughly the same, so it will be a pretty similar course. Perhaps we will have one less stopover in Europe and add\u00a0<\/i>one more in Australia or New Zealand.<\/i><\/b>\u201d<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0That would meet the wishes of Guillaume Verdier who\u00a0\u201cfinds it too dangerous to do such a long stage without checking the boats halfway\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n

How many teams are expected in four years?\u00a0\u201cBetween 10 and 15 seems like a reasonable range to me,\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/b>replies Antoine Mermod.<\/p>\n
