On Sunday,\u00a032 sailors<\/a>, including 10 newcomers, 6 sailors from outside of France and 5 women, will be lining up at the start of the 54th edition of the\u00a0Solitaire du Figaro Paprec<\/strong>\u00a0in Caen. As before each major race, to judge the quality of those taking part, Tip & Shaft questioned a group of experts, including the two most recent winners,\u00a0Tom Laperche<\/strong>\u00a0(2022) and\u00a0Pierre Quiroga<\/strong>\u00a0(2021), the Spaniard,\u00a0Pep Costa<\/strong>, who competed in the last two races and remains very close to the circuit,\u00a0Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire<\/strong>, head of the Finist\u00e8re ocean racing training centre in Port-la-For\u00eat,\u00a0Julien Pulv\u00e9<\/strong>, former coach at the La Rochelle training centre and\u00a0Yann Chateau<\/strong>, the Race Director of the Solitaire.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Our experts had a tough job on their hands choosing the three top skippers, with the podium places likely to be fought out between\u00a0Alexis Loison<\/strong>,\u00a0Corentin Horeau<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Guillaume Pirouelle<\/strong>, the first behind the two others with a very small margin.<\/p>\n

When he crosses the start line on Sunday, Alexis Loison, 39 years of age, (Groupe R\u00e9el)<\/em>, will be taking part in his 17th Solitaire.\u00a0\u201cAn experienced sailor, who has passed a lot on to Guillaume Pirouelle, with whom he sailed double-handed in 2021,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>explained Julien Pulv\u00e9, another former Solitaire racer. His strong points?\u00a0\u201cAlexis is very strong when sailing in currents,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0stressed Yann Chateau, which was confirmed by Tom Laperche: \u201cHe is the ruler in this area. That\u2019s a key point with currents often creating huge gaps between Figaro racers in the English Channel. Alexis is also a brilliant strategist.\u00a0When he goes for tactical plays, he often succeeds<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Pierre Quiroga also praises his\u00a0\u201cexperience and knowledge of the race area\u201d\u00a0<\/em>adding that he has\u00a0\u201creached the point in his career, where\u00a0he does it more for the pleasure than the obligation to win<\/strong>, which maybe why he stands out so much.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Anything going against him?\u00a0\u201cHe has a professional career at the same time\u00a0<\/em>[with a sailmaker – editor], so various constraints. His project got underway a bit late and may not be as well structured as some of the other teams.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Duel between Norman sailors<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Guillaume Pirouelle<\/strong>, second overall (and top newcomer) in his first Solitaire a year ago, is without doubt one of the competitors who is going to make life tough for his fellow Norman sailor, with whom he has a close connection, as he took over the helm of his Figaro Beneteau 3\u00a0R\u00e9gion Normandie<\/em>, with the pair winning the Tour de Bretagne\u00a0this season. After that, the former 470 specialist (among other boats) achieved\u00a0his first solo win this summer<\/strong>\u00a0in a race in the French Elite offshore championship in the Solo Guy Cotten Concarneau.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it was just luck<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d declared Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire, Head of the Finist\u00e8re ocean racing centre, where a dozen Figaro racers train, including Guillaume Pirouelle. \u201cHe is very consistent and is amazingly calm<\/strong>, keeping his emotions under control. These are really important qualities when you want to do well in the Solitaire, and something Tom Laperche was able to do too. What is he lacking? Not much in fact. Maybe he is not quite as relaxed in stronger conditions, but even that is not certain.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Our experts had a lot of superlatives when describing the 29-year old sailor from Rouen. Pep Costa talked about\u00a0“a supernatural talent”<\/strong><\/em>, while Yann Chateau praised\u00a0“his hard work”<\/em>, and Julien Pulv\u00e9 spoke of his temperament\u00a0\u201calways so calm and relaxed\u201d and his \u201cmental determination\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0Finally, Pierre Quiroga wondered if\u00a0\u201chis weakness may be taking it too easy<\/strong>: when sailing fast, his approach is \u2018I don\u2019t take any risks and stick in the middle.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Can Corentin\u00a0keep it up throughout?”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Another name for the podium was\u00a0Corentin Horeau<\/strong>, 34, winner of\u00a0the Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ at the start of the season and\u00a0second in late July in the Solo Guy Cotten.\u00a0\u201cHis season got off to a very good start<\/em>,\u201d added Yann Chateau. \u201cBut last year\u00a0he didn\u2019t do that well in the Solitaire<\/strong>. The question remains: was it just bad luck? Was it due to the tiredness that had built up over the season? Or was it down to the format of the Solitaire, which was longer with legs of around 600 miles instead of the 400 miles in the pre-season races?\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Similar questions were raised about Julien Pulv\u00e9:\u00a0\u201c<\/em><\/strong>He is of course a fantastic racer, but can he keep it up throughout?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Pierre Quiroga pointed out one of his weaknesses:\u00a0\u201cHis major enemy is himself and he knows that.<\/strong>\u00a0We have more or less the same blood in our veins. It\u2019s down to his personality. That can be his downfall in certain situations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire believes however that the sailor from La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer\u00a0can rely on his wealth of experience:\u00a0\u201cHe has been through a wide range of fleets with a lot of different types of racing<\/strong>, which has opened up his outlook.\u00a0<\/strong>It means he is not surprised when things happen and the memories linger for a long time on his mind and when racing, that is something you can draw on.\u00a0Technically he is the master<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Pep Costa considers that whith\u00a0Banque Populaire with banque populaire successor in the mid-season to Mutuelle Bleue,\u00a0\u201cCorentin has the perfect sponsor<\/strong>, that meant\u00a0that he was able to feel relaxed when he arrived. That is all it took for him to be able to make the most of all his talent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTen have\u00a0a strong chance
\nof making it to the podium!\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

The list of favourites drawn up by the experts does not end there. According to Yann Chateau,\u00a0\u201cthere are around ten who have a strong chance of making it to the podium!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Among them,\u00a0Gaston Morvan<\/strong>, who succeeded Tom Laperche on the Figaro 3, R\u00e9gion Bretagne-CMB Performance who for Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire,\u00a0\u201chas what it takes to do well<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0He just needs to be consistent and keep performing well.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

The Head of the Finist\u00e8re centre also came up with the name of\u00a0Lo\u00efs Berrehar<\/strong>\u00a0(Skipper Macif 2022)<\/em>, winner of\u00a0the Transat Paprec in 2023 with Charlotte Yven: \u201cTechnically, he is very good and this year, he has really worked hard.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Tom Laperche, who often sailed with him in Port-la-For\u00eat, believes that “when conditions are right, he is certainly one of the fastest.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Among some of the other names that cropped up for a place on the podium\u00a0are\u00a0Charlotte Yven<\/strong>\u00a0(Skipper Macif 2023),\u00a0<\/em>Tom Dolan<\/strong>\u00a0(Smurfit Kappa – Kingspan)\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Elodie Bonafous<\/strong>, (Qu\u00e9guiner-La Vie en Rose)<\/em>, eighth a year ago with in particular third place in the final leg.\u00a0\u201cShe is just so strong<\/strong>!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0admired Pep Costa, who sailed with the 28 year old sailor in the Tour de Bretagne this summer. \u201cShe has the<\/em>\u00a0talent to be able to sail her boat quickly and is at ease with the project and never gives up. She could quite easily make it to the podium!\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Julien Pulv\u00e9 added:\u00a0\u201cElodie has shown several times that she never gives an inch\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and is one of the strong outsiders!\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Basile Bourgno<\/strong>n (Edenred),\u00a0<\/em>third in the Solo Guy Cotten Concarneau, is also one of the leading outsiders chosen by our experts.\u00a0\u201cHe likes to play around with a gap moving away from the other competitors. He never hesitates to go for an option,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>explained Yann Chateau. What about the newcomers?Hugo Dhallenne\u00a0<\/strong>(YC de Saint-Lunaire)<\/em>, winner of the last Mini Transat in the series category and sixth in the recent Solo Guy Cotten Concarneau, has the vote of all our experts.<\/p>\n
