After looking at\u00a0the Class40 and Ocean Fifty<\/a>\u00a0fleet, this week, Tip & Shaft is examining the\u00a05 Ultim<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a040 Imoca<\/a>\u00a0boats that will be lining up on Sunday at the start of the\u00a0Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie-Le Havre.<\/strong>\u00a0We are focusing on the favourites in these two categories along with the Race Director,\u00a0Francis Le Goff,<\/strong>\u00a0the President of the Imoca class,\u00a0Antoine Mermod,<\/strong>\u00a0the Director of the Finist\u00e8re Course au Large training centre in Port-la-For\u00eat,\u00a0Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire,<\/strong>\u00a0the skipper of Holcim-PRB,\u00a0Nicolas Lunven,<\/strong>\u00a0the Race Directors of the 2024 Vend\u00e9e Globe,\u00a0Hubert Lemonnier\u00a0<\/strong>and the 24-hour Ultim,\u00a0Gildas Morvan,<\/strong>\u00a0and the journalist,\u00a0Jacques Guyader\u00a0<\/strong>(<\/em>Ouest-France).<\/em><\/p>\n

This is unprecedented in the Transat Jacques Vabre. 40 Imocas will line up at the start on Sunday 29th October, including\u00a0eleven new generation boats<\/strong>\u00a0built after the 2020 Vend\u00e9e Globe. What about the\u00a0predictions? All of the experts found this a tricky task, as the\u00a0\u201clevel is that much higher,”<\/em>\u00a0said the Hubert Lemonnier. As for Antoine Mermod, he declared,\u00a0“considering the number of excellent projects, it will be a matter of reliability, how well prepared they are and\u00a0how close they are to getting 100% out of their boats.<\/strong>That will make all the difference.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Five pairs stand out.\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Franck Cammas<\/strong>\u00a0(Charal<\/em>), winners of the D\u00e9fi Azimut and second in the Guyader Bermudes 1000 Race, are our choice for the top spot.\u00a0“There are no weak points in the project,<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explained Nicolas Lunven, who is not competing in the race, but who will be there for the solo return race, Retour \u00e0 la Base, on\u00a0Holcim PRB<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cThe pair perform well and the boat has been fine-tuned.”\u00a0<\/em>For Jacques Guyader,\u00a0“J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou can rely\u00a0on the skills of Franck Cammas<\/strong>, who always wants to go that bit further to advance projects and enhance performance.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Just behind them, our experts go for the pair formed by\u00a0Thomas Ruyant\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re<\/strong>\u00a0(For People<\/em>), the title-holder and winner this year of the Guyader Bermudes 1000 Race.\u00a0“They are\u00a0a fantastic pair in terms of work at the helm, trimming and strategy,<\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0stressed Hubert Lemonnier. Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire added:\u00a0“Morgan is the crewman that always takes it up a notch.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0What is their weakest point?\u00a0“The boat hasn\u2019t sailed that much and may not be that reliable, as we saw this summer,”<\/em>\u00a0answered Nicolas Lunven. The crew were in fact forced to abandon the Fastnet due to structural problems on the Koch\/Finot-Conq designed boat launched in March, which was relaunched in early October.<\/p>\n

In third place, our experts put\u00a0Charlie Dalin<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry<\/strong>\u00a0(Macif Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance<\/em>),\u00a0before we learnt on Friday that the first,\u00a0“following a medical problem”<\/em>, will not be able to take part in the double-handed transatlantic race (see box below<\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The pairs formed by Goodchild\/Koch and
\nRichomme\/Eli\u00e8s ready to pounce<\/strong><\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n

Behind our top two duos, our experts put\u00a0Sam Goodchild<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Antoine Koch<\/strong>\u00a0(For the Planet<\/em>) just off the podium.\u00a0“Sam is an exceptional sailor and among\u00a0those who clocked up the most miles in 2023<\/strong>\u00a0by racing in a large part of The Ocean Race on\u00a0<\/em>Holcim PRB,”<\/em>\u00a0stated Antoine Mermod. Although the Verdier design won the last race,\u00a0“she finds it hard in some conditions<\/strong>, in particular downwind in strong winds,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explained Nicolas Lunven.\u00a0\u201cShe is nevertheless a good all-rounder that performs well in lighter and moderate conditions upwind and reaching.”<\/em>\u00a0Yoann Richomme<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Yann Eli\u00e8s<\/strong>\u00a0(Paprec Ark\u00e9a<\/em>),\u00a0“two former Figaro racers with a really fast boat<\/em>\u00a0(designed by Koch\/Finot-Conq and launched last February)” – according to Hubert Lemonnier – complete the top four after their second place in the Fastnet.<\/p>\n

After, our experts also mentioned\u00a0Sam Davies<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jack Bouttell<\/strong>\u00a0on the Manuard-designed\u00a0Initiatives Coeur.<\/em>\u00a0Among them, Nicolas Lunven, who was going to be the co-skipper before being called up by\u00a0Holcim PRB,<\/em>\u00a0said:\u00a0“I was won over by this\u00a0excellent all-rounder,<\/strong>\u00a0which is so easy to handle and amazing in terms of performance.”<\/em>\u00a0Among the other outsiders that were mentioned, there were the pairs formed by\u00a0Justine Mettraux\/Julien Villion<\/strong>\u00a0(Teamwork.net<\/em>),\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Simon\/Iker Martinez<\/strong>\u00a0(Groupe Dubreuil,\u00a0<\/em>ex\u00a011th Hour,<\/em>\u00a0winner of The Ocean Race), and\u00a0Maxime Sorel\/ Christopher Pratt<\/strong>\u00a0(V And B- Monbana-Mayenne<\/em>),\u00a0“discreet, but always up there,”<\/em>\u00a0according to Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire, thinking of the results obtained by the Verdier design (sistership to the former\u00a0Apivia<\/em>) in the Rhum (4th) and the Fastnet (5th).<\/p>\n

As for the boats with daggerboards, the most recent,\u00a0Stand as One<\/em>, the first Imoca designed by David Raison, skippered by\u00a0\u00c9ric Bellion<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Martin Le Pape<\/strong>\u00a0“should be at the front, even if she encountered some technical problems in the D\u00e9fi Azimut,”\u00a0<\/em>explained Jacques Guyader. Our experts also mentioned\u00a0Benjamin Ferr\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Pierre Le Roy\u00a0<\/strong>(Monnoyeur Duo for a Job<\/em>), on a boat that\u00a0“so far has been the best all-rounder and best performer of her generation,”\u00a0<\/em>according to the journalist from\u00a0Ouest-France<\/em>, and also\u00a0Tanguy Le Turquais<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0F\u00e9lix De Navacelle<\/strong>\u00a0(Lazare<\/em>) as well as\u00a0Violette Dorange<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Damien Guillou<\/strong>\u00a0(Devenir<\/em>).\u00a0“Violette knows how far she can go, without that upsetting her, which means she can go on the attack all the time. We feel confident that she will do well,”\u00a0<\/em>commented Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

End of the supremacy
\nfor the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild?<\/strong><\/em><\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n

Five Ultims will compete on a 7,500-mile course<\/strong>\u00a0between Le Havre and Fort-de-France. The match promises to be close as the gaps between the\u00a0Maxi Edmond de Rothschild<\/em>, until now the reference boat (winner of the Jacques Vabre 2021 and the Route du Rhum 2022), and its competitors seem to have narrowed. \u201cIn September, during a 36-hour training session including two legs and different speeds,\u00a0there were very few gaps between Gitana, SVR Lazartigue and Banque Populaire<\/strong>, they were side by side,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Jeanne\u00a0Gr\u00e9goire. Similar performances were seen at the end of September during the 24h Ultim, narrowly won by\u00a0Banque Populaire XI\u00a0<\/em>ahead of\u00a0Gitana 17<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0SVR Lazartigue<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese race\u00a0was\u00a0short so it is difficult to draw any major conclusions from it,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0underlines race director Gildas Morvan.\u00a0\u201cBut it is clear that Banque Populaire and SVR Lazartigue have made good progress.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0According to Francis Le Goff,\u00a0“it is therefore the duos more than the boat itself, which should make the difference this time.”\u00a0<\/em>And so because of this\u00a0Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h\/S\u00e9bastien Josse<\/strong>\u00a0(Banque Populaire XI<\/em>) are the duo that our experts place on the top of the podium. \u201cThey don\u2019t seem to have any weaknesses\u00a0<\/strong>on the different speeds of the boat,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0observes Francis Le Goff.\u00a0\u201cIts big strong point seems to be its\u00a0versatility,<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<\/em>says Nicolas Lunven.\u00a0\u201cIt goes fast in almost all conditions and it is perhaps a little easier to sail than the others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Banque Populaire XI is just ahead of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild<\/strong>,\u00a0“a little heavier than the others, which enables her to be stiff and perform very well in the breeze”<\/em>, notes Nicolas Lunven. If Charles Caudrelier has lost his teammate Franck Cammas, now on Charal, Caudrelier can count on\u00a0“Erwan Israel, his former router, who knows the boat very well and has already sailed on it a lot”<\/em>, says Gildas Morvan. The duo\u00a0Tom Laperche\/Fran\u00e7ois Gabart<\/strong>\u00a0(SVR Lazartigue<\/em>) completes the podium of our experts. \u201cOn the Route du Rhum, SVR was penalized at a crucial moment by a break in the foil lifting system, but without that, they were was close to Gitana and kept up the pace,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>analyzes Morvan.<\/p>\n

Sodebo Ultim 3 in progress<\/strong><\/em><\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n

Behind this trio, it is difficult to know where\u00a0Thomas Coville<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Thomas Rouxel<\/strong>\u00a0(Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>) lie, absent from the 24h Ultim due to daggerboard damage. According to Jacques Guyader, who sailed on the multihull after its winter refit,\u00a0the boat has made good progress<\/strong>.\u00a0“The mast has been extended by 2.50 m with the sail area that goes with it, and the platform has been reduced by 500 kilos, particularly at the level of the foil wells.\u00a0The trimaran, which was losing ground in the transition phases, is taking off now faster,<\/strong>\u00a0from 12 knots of wind.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Finally, Actual Ultim 3, skippered by\u00a0Anthony Marchand<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Thierry Chabagny<\/strong>\u00a0“should be a notch below the rest\u00a0even with its new pair of foils”<\/em>, estimates Gildas Morvan.\u00a0\u201cBut if the sea conditions do not allow regular flight for other boats, perhaps it will be favored,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>suggests Francis Le Goff. That will be the case for the first two\u00a0days. The match will also be played on land, recalls Jacques Guyader:\u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s not forget that\u00a0it is also a battle of the routing cells.<\/strong>\u00a0They are the ones who provide crucial information on the strategy. And sometimes some routers are more inspired than others.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Charlie Dalin withdraws.\u00a0<\/strong>The news\u00a0came down on Friday<\/a>:\u00a0“following a medical problem”<\/em>, Charlie Dalin will not be racing in the Transat Jacques Vabre. However, he and Pascal Bid\u00e9gorry will cross the start line to preserve their chances of taking part in the next Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u00a0The round-the-world notice of race<\/a>\u00a0requires skipper\/boat combinations to\u00a0“take the start of a minimum of two single-handed races (including one in 2022 or 2023 AND one in 2024)”<\/em>, with an asterisk specifying:\u00a0“In the event of major damage encountered on the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 making it impossible for the pair to take part in the return race of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 [Retour \u00e0 La Base, Editor’s note], the AO (organising authority) may grant a dispensation and accept that the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 be substituted for the start of the return race.”<\/em>\u00a0Contacted by Tip & Shaft, Vend\u00e9e Globe race director Hubert Lemonnier confirmed that\u00a0this derogation could apply to Charlie Dalin<\/strong>\u00a0if he did not take the start of Retour \u00e0 La Base.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
