Ariane de Rothschild<\/em><\/strong>, president of the Edmond de Rothschild Group,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<\/em>Cyril Dardashti<\/em><\/strong>, managing director of the Gitana Team, officially announced on Thursday in Paris\u00a0<\/em>the launch of a new Ultim<\/em><\/a>, designed by\u00a0<\/em>Guillaume Verdier\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and built by\u00a0<\/em>CDK Group<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>Tip & Shaft\u00a0was present and tells you more about this new project.<\/em><\/p>\n

A year after first raising the possibility, Cyril Dardashti and Ariane de Rothschild have confirmed that\u00a0Gitana 17 will\u00a0<\/em>have a successor in less than two years,\u00a0Gitana 18<\/em>, and that it will once again be\u00a0an Ultim trimaran<\/strong>. The announcement was made official this Thursday in Paris, at the Edmond de Rothschild bank’s Paris premises. Was the choice obvious?\u00a0“No,”\u00a0<\/em>replies Cyril Dardashti.\u00a0“We had presented several projects to Ariane de Rothschild, including an Imoca,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>which we felt was a legitimate choice, insofar as there is one race that the team has never won: the Vend\u00e9e Globe”.<\/em><\/p>\n

What made the difference in the end for a new Ultim?\u00a0“First of all there’s our history. We have\u00a0<\/em>a very strong preference for multihulls<\/em><\/strong>,”\u00a0<\/em>explains Ariane de Rothschild.\u00a0“A monohull could have been a temporary solution to keep our project on track and avoid spending two years without sailing during the construction period, but we would have gone back to a multihull in any case. The debate was rather:\u00a0<\/em>were we sure we could make a significant difference with a new Ultim\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>compared to\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 17, which has certainly reached maturity, but which we can still push further? You have the answer.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Cyril Dardashti adds:\u00a0“One of the reasons that pushed us towards this solution was the\u00a0<\/em>fact that T-rudders were not authorised on the Imoca boats<\/em><\/strong>, so we wanted to stick with the ‘real fly’, but also the work that we had been doing for several months with Guillaume Verdier’s teams and our design office, which told us that it was still possible to make significant gains with a new Ultim.”<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Who is\u00a0Gitana 17\u00a0<\/em>for?<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The choice was officially made\u00a0“a fortnight ago”,\u00a0<\/em>assures the general manager of Gitana Team, who adds:\u00a0“We had also worked with Guillaume\u00a0<\/em>on the plans for an Imoca, we have also talked about a trimaran outside the Ultim class<\/em><\/strong>, but it seemed quite legitimate to us to continue working with the class insofar as there are some great things to write with them”.\u00a0<\/em>Skipper of the current\u00a0Maxi Edmond de Rothschild (Gitana 17)<\/em>, Charles Caudrelier adds, regarding the decision taken:\u00a0“Among the conditions for a new boat,\u00a0<\/em>we had to be sure of being able to do better<\/em><\/strong>, and that’s something we’ve been thinking about for at least six months, but\u00a0<\/em>also to sell\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 17.<\/strong>“<\/em><\/p>\n

Which is the case? Not officially, but Cyril Dardashti seems particularly confident, assuring us that\u00a0the Verdier design will be sold\u00a0“soon”<\/em><\/strong>, before adding:\u00a0“Today, we’ve received around ten serious proposals\u00a0<\/em>[which he doesn’t wish to talk about, bound by confidentiality agreements, editor’s note], some of which we’ve selected, others not, I even had calls again not too long ago.”<\/em><\/p>\n

For the managing director of Gitana Team, the criteria are\u00a0“<\/em>the price, the date,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>as we’d like to see our programme through to the end, including the Jules Verne Trophy during the winter of 2024-2025, and the fact that the buyer does the Ultim circuit, even if it’s not a priority.”\u00a0<\/em>The price:\u00a0“There’s\u00a0<\/em>a \u20ac13 million version<\/em><\/strong>, with the boat handed over as she is today,\u00a0<\/em>and a \u20ac15 million version<\/em><\/strong>, with all the spare appendages and a transfer of knowledge and technology so that the buyer has all the keys in hand to use her quickly.” Does\u00a0<\/em>this mean that\u00a0Gitana 18\u00a0<\/em>will cost a minimum of 15 million euros?\u00a0“Yes, it will be in those waters, but I won’t be able to tell you that until she’s launched.”<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Secret-defence on the future boat<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cyril Dardashti is confident that\u00a0Gitana 18<\/em>\u00a0will be able to move up the range even further, and to do so he has\u00a0once again chosen to rely on Guillaume Verdier\u00a0<\/strong>and his team.\u00a0“It’s a natural choice,”\u00a0<\/em>he says.\u00a0“We’ve had a long and trusting relationship with him, and a real design team has developed between him and our design office.\u00a0<\/em>Present in Paris on Thursday, the architect adds:\u00a0“In the end, it’s a\u00a0<\/em>continuous piece\u00a0<\/em>of work.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>Between\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 17\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 18, we never stopped working.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The plans for the platform are now almost complete<\/strong>, with construction due to start\u00a0“at the end of the month”,\u00a0<\/em>according to Cyril Dardashti. When asked about the areas in which it is possible to make significant gains, most of the people we spoke to were rather evasive.\u00a0“On the hulls, we can still make it easier to pass through the sea and make the boats fly better,”\u00a0<\/em>says Guillaume Verdier.\u00a0“There are still\u00a0<\/em>a huge number of knots to be gained in terms of aerodynamics<\/em><\/strong>, we have apparent winds close to 45-50 knots almost all the time, so we really need to look after this aspect. And as for the sails, between the rigid wing we saw on the America’s Cup in San Francisco\u00a0<\/em>(in 2010)\u00a0and a flexible sail, there’s a huge in-between world to explore.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Charles Caudrelier also clearly has the subject of sails on his mind, confiding:\u00a0“I had a lot of ambition on the sail plan, we can’t make a rigid wing\u00a0<\/em>(forbidden by the rules), it’s a crazy project that I had in mind, but I think there are still ideas for improving the engine. I think we’re\u00a0<\/em>going to do something new, which is why we don’t want to show anything<\/em><\/strong>, we’re going to be very protective.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Charles Caudrelier until 2026<\/span><\/h2>\n

The future\u00a0Gitana 18\u00a0<\/em>will be built\u00a0in Lorientbyt CDK which has managed to convince the Gitana Team.\u00a0“We interviewed Multiplast\u00a0<\/em>(who built the\u00a0Maxi Edmond de Rothschild<\/em>)\u00a0and other shipyards, but\u00a0<\/em>we chose CDK first and foremost for the proximity<\/em><\/strong>, as we wanted a shipyard close to our premises. They also showed us a cutting-edge industrial tool, and we were convinced by the technology deployed”,\u00a0<\/em>explains Cyril Dardashti.<\/p>\n

CDK’s Deputy Managing Director, Yann Dollo, confides:\u00a0“I think that what may have tipped the balance in our favour is that\u00a0<\/em>we have developed a great deal of expertise in the autoclave baking of very large parts<\/em><\/strong>, thanks in particular to the tool we invested in three years ago in Lorient, which is designed to be able to manufacture the arm of an Ultim in a single piece”.\u00a0<\/em>He estimates that\u00a0Gitana 18\u00a0<\/em>will require\u00a0“100,000 hours of work, around 40% of activity over two years”,<\/em>\u00a0the launch is\u00a0scheduled for September 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With perhaps the Transat Jacques Vabre 2025 as her first race, time permitting, and a major objective a year later,\u00a0the Route du Rhum 2026, which Charles Caudrelier is aiming for<\/strong>:\u00a0“I’m happy to be able to defend my title, which wasn’t necessarily planned at the start,”\u00a0<\/em>he explains. “I’m looking forward to that, and then\u00a0<\/em>the idea is to support a young person to replace me<\/em><\/strong>, because I also want to pass on my experience.”<\/em>\u00a0Has casting already begun to take over in three years’ time?\u00a0“We’re not there yet,”\u00a0<\/em>replies Cyril Dardashti,\u00a0“but we’re looking at actors, young and old alike, because these are not machines you can just put into any hands.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
