The last race of the Imoca season,\u00a0<\/em>Retour \u00e0 La Base<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has marked another step towards\u00a0<\/em>the qualification and selection of the candidates for the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/em><\/strong>. Where do the skippers stand in this process and in the race for miles?\u00a0<\/em>Tip & Shaft takes\u00a0stock.<\/em><\/p>\n

Although there are currently\u00a044 official candidates<\/a>\u00a0for the Vend\u00e9e Globe, only\u00a040 will be lining up at the start on 10 November 2024<\/strong>, according tothe Notice of Race, they have to meet the qualification criteria by the official close of entries on 30 June. Article 9.1 of\u00a0the Notice of Race<\/a>\u00a0requires each skipper\/boat pairing\u00a0“taken the start of at least two solo races (including one in 2022 or 2023 AND one in 2024) AND have finished with a ranking in at least one of these two races.\u00a0In addition, the Skipper will confirm his\/her qualification if his\/her racing time is shorter or equal to the winner\u2019s racing time plus 50%.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Of the 44 candidates\u00a0only 5 have not yet fulfilled the first condition<\/strong>: having completed a race on their Vend\u00e9e Globe boat in 2022 or 2023 within the allotted time. Finishing 30th in Retour \u00e0 La Base,\u00a0Denis Van Weynbergh\u00a0<\/strong>(D’Ieteren Group<\/em>) finished 90 minutes over the time that would have allowed him to get through the winter in peace.\u00a0“It’s obviously a bit frustrating,”\u00a0<\/em>the Belgian skipper told us.\u00a0“But I’m still happy to have racked up the miles.”\u00a0<\/em>To earn his ticket, he will have to complete one of the last two qualifying races,\u00a0The Transat CIC\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0New-York-Vend\u00e9e Les Sables d’Olonne\u00a0<\/strong>next spring, this time on time.<\/em><\/p>\n

Three sailors,\u00a0\u00c9ric Bellion<\/strong>,\u00a0Charlie Dalin\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Phil Sharp<\/strong>,were unable totake the start of Retour \u00e0 La Base on their new boats, launched in June for the first two and in October for the last one. In the case of\u00a0Stand as One,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>a structural problem on the Jacques Vabre that forced \u00c9ric Bellion and Martin Le Pape to retire, with the impossibility of making repairs in time to reach Martinique.<\/p>\n

However, a derogation to article 9.1 specifies that\u00a0“in the event of major damage occurring during the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 making it impossible for the pair to enter the return race of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023, the OA may grant a derogation and accept that the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 substitute for the start of the return race.”<\/em><\/p>\n

As Stand as One\u00a0<\/em>falls squarely within this framework,\u00a0Eric Bellion explains to us that he\u00a0“requested the derogation, which was quickly accepted”<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>Before adding, with regard to the rest of the qualification process:\u00a0“I have to finish at least one of the two races next year, but I’m not worried. And in any case, if I don’t manage it, it will mean that I’m not ready.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As for Charlie Dalin, it was\u00a0a health problem\u00a0<\/strong>that prevented him from racing inthe Transat Jacques Vabre, of which he only crossed the start line, and Retour \u00e0 la Base. Contacted by\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>, the runner-up in the last Vend\u00e9e Globe said:\u00a0“We asked the organisation if the case of major damage could apply to me, and we’ve had confirmation<\/strong>.”\u00a0<\/em>This iswhat we were told<\/a>\u00a0Hubert Lemonnier, the Vend\u00e9e Globe race director on October 27, when the withdrawal of Le Havre was made official.<\/p>\n

Saem Vend\u00e9e, the organiser, who were contacted for this article, did not wish to comment. Like \u00c9ric Bellion, Charlie Dalin will therefore have to complete one of the last two solo transatlantic races next spring, which leads him to say:\u00a0“<\/em>I’m going to have to sail in a fairly reasoned way<\/em><\/strong>, which isn’t my habit, in order to secure my qualification for the CIC Transat. I hope to get there so that I can push\u00a0a bit more on the way back.”<\/em><\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Phil Sharp<\/strong>, who hadto abandon Retour \u00e0 La Base after suffering damage during the delivery trip to Martinique, his chances of qualifying are now formally very much in doubt:\u00a0according to the Notice of Race, he can no longer qualify<\/strong>. However, the Briton still wants to believe:\u00a0“The Vend\u00e9e Globe\u00a0<\/em>remains a firm objective\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>for\u00a0<\/em>OceansLab. We are currently exploring several options to maximise our chances of being on the start line.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the list of 44, there is still one sailor\u00a0on the point of completing the first qualifying condition: Jean Le Cam<\/strong>,\u00a0still at sea<\/a>\u00a0on Retour \u00e0 La Base. To finish in a time\u00a0“shorter or equal to the winner\u2019s racing time plus 50%”<\/em>, the skipper of\u00a0Tout commence en Finist\u00e8re-Armor-lux<\/em>, whose time started when he crossed the line in Fort-de-France on 6 December at 17:41,\u00a0must arrive in Lorient before 20 December at 05:47<\/strong>. However, this Friday, his arrival is expected on the night of the 18th to the 19th. If he is on schedule, he will just have to take the start of The Transat CIC or New York-Vend\u00e9e to definitively validate his qualification.<\/p>\n

Above all,\u00a0he will be rid of the pressure of selection<\/strong>, also known as the race for miles,\u00a0which will only be used if there are more than 40 candidates who have completed their entries by 30 June. Article 9.2.2 of the Notice of Race states that\u00a0“the first thirteen new boats to take the start of a qualifying race in accordance with the conditions laid down in article 9.1 of the NOR.”<\/em><\/p>\n

It will also be the case for the sailor who will receive the famous wild-card\u00a0“at the OA\u2019s discretion”.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The special case<\/span><\/h2>\n

of Fran\u00e7ois Guiffant<\/span><\/h2>\n

So there are still 26 places available,\u00a0<\/strong>and 30 of them are up for grabs in\u00a0the famous race for miles<\/a>. The lucky ones will be those who, over the twelve Imoca Globe Series races selected, have clocked up the greatest number of miles. Bearing in mind that the coefficients vary according to the event\u00a0and that the sailors\u00a0can accumulate miles on a boat other\u00a0<\/strong>than the one on which they will be competing in the Vend\u00e9e Globe.<\/p>\n

This has enabled\u00a0Fabrice Am\u00e9d\u00e9o\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0keep the miles acquired\u00a0<\/strong>on his Imoca lost in a fire during the Route du Rhum. The skipper ofNexans-Art et Fen\u00eatres, on the\u00a0<\/em>other hand, was forced to restart his qualification process on Rodolphe S\u00e9pho’s former boat, so he had to line up at the start of Retour \u00e0 La Base. “To be sure of finishing, I adopted a strategy that minimised the risks<\/em>.\u00a0I‘m very happy because I’m well placed in the\u00a0race for miles<\/strong><\/em>(14th with 12,281 miles), what better could I have dreamed of a year after being shipwrecked?”\u00a0<\/em>In this race for selection, a number of boats are now out of the woods, or nearly so, as is the case with\u00a0Louis Duc<\/strong>, 8th with 14,202 miles: “<\/em>I’m not under any stress<\/em><\/strong>, apart from the possibility of breaking something. All I have to do now is take the start of the CIC Transat to qualify.”<\/em><\/p>\n

In this race for miles,\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Guiffant<\/strong>‘s case is a special one, as he is sailing an Imoca launched in 2004, which is out of the Vend\u00e9e Globe rules – the boats must have been launched from 2005 onwards.\u00a0“I had applied for an exemption so that she could be allowed to race if there was a place left, and that was accepted.\u00a0<\/em>So I don’t have priority<\/em><\/strong>, but I’m continuing my qualification like the others, and I tell myself that I’ll have tried everything.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another uncertain case is that of Nicolas Troussel<\/strong>, who has not only slipped down the rankings in terms of miles, as he was deprived of the return trip between Metropolitan France and Martinique following the withdrawal of his partner\u00a0Corum L’\u00c9pargne\u00a0<\/em>at the end of September, but above all has to find a sponsor.\u00a0“Even though the clock is ticking,\u00a0<\/em>I’m not giving up,”\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>he explains.\u00a0“The file is still in a lot of hands and I get calls every day trying to move it forward.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The case of Fran\u00e7ois Guiffant and the uncertainty surrounding Nicolas Troussel are bound to do the trick for those who are following the\u00a0latter in the rankings after completing the Jacques Vabre and Retour \u00e0 La Base,\u00a0Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer (6,022 miles), and Violette Dorange (5,674)<\/strong>. On the other hand, the pressure is on for\u00a0Oliver Heer (5,018) and James Harayda (4,697 miles)<\/strong>, who lost out big time at the end of the year: the former quickly retired from the Jacques Vabre and the latter didn’t take part in either of the two races.<\/p>\n

Contacted byTip & Shaft<\/em>, the Briton puts things into perspective:\u00a0“<\/em>Anything can still happen between now and 1st July<\/em><\/strong>. There are a lot of variables that can come into play, such as possible breakages or other unforeseen events, but I still have every chance.”\u00a0<\/em>The words of Violette Dorange,\u00a0“relieved to be virtually qualified for the Vend\u00e9e Globe”<\/em>, will perhaps reassure him, as the skipper of\u00a0Devenir\u00a0<\/em>is confident:\u00a0“For the selection,\u00a0<\/em>I’m convinced that we won’t need the race for miles<\/em><\/strong>, it’s highly likely that everyone will go.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The verdict will be in on July 1.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
