Since its first edition in 1984, the race, which takes place every four years, has seen\u00a0<strong>some of the biggest names in sailing triumph<\/strong>, from Lo\u00efc Caradec, winner in 1984 on Royale, to Halvard Mabire, double winner in Class40 (2008 and 2012), via Titouan Lamazou (1988), Laurent Bourgnon (1992), Lo\u00efck Peyron (1996) and Franck Cammas (2000).<\/p>\n<p>Team-mate of Mike Birch in 1984 and winner eight years later at the helm of Fujicolor II, Lo\u00efck Peyron considers the race to be\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;one of the finest crewed events&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>, while Karine Fauconnier, a two-time winner, in 2004 as skipper of the Orma Sergio Tacchini, then in 2016 alongside Lalou Roucayrol on the\u00a0<em>Arkema<\/em>\u00a0Multi50, agrees:\u00a0<em>&#8220;The welcome in Quebec and Saint-Malo is extraordinary. And the whole stretch on the Saint Lawrence is incredibly beautiful.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Transat Qu\u00e9bec Saint-Malo is\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;three races in one&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>, sums up its director, Richard Samson: the trip down the Saint Lawrence, the crossing of the North Atlantic and the finish in Europe. As Karine Fauconnier confirms:\u00a0<em>&#8220;On the Saint Lawrence, it&#8217;s quite technical, with currents, tides and whales. As soon as you leave it,\u00a0<strong>you go from summer to winter<\/strong>, into a world of mist and cold. And at the end, it often happens that your pursuers come back from behind, so we switch into tactical mode.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0For Lo\u00efck Peyron, who has held the record since 1996 (7 days, 20 hours and 24 minutes), this transatlantic race is\u00a0<em>&#8220;<strong>a sprint, a short and dense race<\/strong>, you have to preserve the machine, but not too much.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For this 10th edition,\u00a0<em>&#8220;around sixty boats are expected to take part,\u00a0<strong>a record number<\/strong>, with a strong French presence&#8221;<\/em>, announces Richard Samson. Among this fleet, the\u00a0<strong>Class40s now represent<em>\u00a0&#8220;the star class&#8221;<\/em>,<\/strong>\u00a0continues the organiser, who estimates\u00a0around thirty of them on the start line on 30 June. The skippers entered include Vincent\u00a0<strong>Riou<\/strong>\u00a0(Pierreval-Goodplanet Foundattion), the Italian Alberto\u00a0<strong>Bona<\/strong>\u00a0(IBSA), the Belgian Jonas\u00a0<strong>Gerckens<\/strong>\u00a0(Volvo Curium), Am\u00e9lie\u00a0<strong>Grassi<\/strong>\u00a0(La Boulang\u00e8re Bio), Nicolas\u00a0<strong>d&#8217;Estais<\/strong>\u00a0(Caf\u00e9 Joyeux), Aur\u00e9lien\u00a0<strong>Ducroz<\/strong>\u00a0(Crosscall), Axel\u00a0<strong>Tr\u00e9hin<\/strong>\u00a0(Project Rescue Ocean) or Ian\u00a0<strong>Lipinski<\/strong>, for what will be his last race on n\u00b0158 Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel, the first scow to be launched, in the summer of 2019 &#8211; the skipper will then have a new boat at his disposal.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Open Multi<\/strong>\u00a0category will feature Lo\u00efc Escoffier (<em>Lodigroup<\/em>), winner of the 2022 Route du Rhum in the Rhum Multi class, and Yann Mariley (<em>No Limit<\/em>). They will cover almost 1,000 miles more than the rest of the fleet before Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to ensure that all the boats finish quite in the same time in Brittany. In tribute to Canadians Mike Birch (five participations to date) and Gerry Roufs, two categories will bear their names, the first made up of\u00a0<strong>vintage multihulls<\/strong>\u00a0(five to six crews expected), the second of\u00a0<strong>monohulls from 45 to 70 feet\u00a0<\/strong>(around ten in all).<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the TQSM w<strong>ill be celebrating the cultural links between France and Quebec<\/strong>, with a programme called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1&amp;id=77de4ec030&amp;e=5abcc047f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/tipandshaft.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D1e692787e2c4cc3370813fca1%26id%3D77de4ec030%26e%3D5abcc047f7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711036613187000&amp;usg=AOvVaw18PpgY05l3uwdl9_iFvHOL\">Horizon Saint-Laurent<\/a>\u00a0in the start (20-30 June) and finish (9-17 July) villages.\u00a0<em>&#8220;The programme will highlight\u00a0<strong>the history of the transatlantic race and Quebec&#8217;s rich maritime heritage<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>explains Richard Samson<em>.
