With\u00a0two new races<\/strong>\u00a0on the calendar<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0several new designs<\/strong>\u00a0in the water and a growing number of contenders to join the circuit,\u00a0Class40\u00a0<\/strong>continues to be buoyed by favourable winds at the start of the 2024 season. Tip & Shaft takes stock.<\/em><\/p>\n

While the euphoria that swept through Class40 between 2019 and 2022 – with around thirty new boats – has died down somewhat,\u00a0its appeal has not lost any steam<\/strong>\u00a0since the last Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, as its president, C\u00e9dric de Kervenoa\u00ebl, points out:\u00a0“This dynamism is reflected in particular in<\/em>\u00a0the thirty or so boats that will be crossing the Atlantic over<\/strong>\u00a0the coming weeks<\/em>.“<\/em>\u00a0He is referring to the\u00a0<\/em>13 crews<\/strong>\u00a0setting off on Sunday on the\u00a0Niji 40<\/u><\/a>, the new transatlantic race between Belle-Ile-en-Mer and Marie Galante\u00a0(see our article<\/em><\/u><\/a>) and the\u00a013 solo sailors<\/strong>\u00a0entered on\u00a0The Transat CIC<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(starting on 28 April from Lorient).<\/p>\n

“It’s quite encouraging to see that on two events so close in time, with very different characteristics,\u00a0we’ve managed to bring together an interesting fleet for each of them<\/strong>, both in terms of numbers and from a sporting point of view,”\u00a0<\/em>adds the president of the class. And he is delighted with the 2024 calendar, which is\u00a0“extremely complete, offering\u00a0a virtuous Atlantic triangle, with no cargo return<\/strong>“<\/em>: after these two outward transatlantic races, the\u00a0Atlantic Cup<\/u><\/a>\u00a0will take place along the American coast (May 25-June 7), followed by the\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec-Saint-Malo<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(start on June 30) as the return transatlantic race.<\/p>\n

A new race<\/strong>\u00a0will also be entering<\/strong>\u00a0the calendar: the\u00a0Med Max<\/u><\/a>, between Port-Camargue and Sa\u00efdia, in Morocco (also open to the Ocean Fifty, starting on 29 September), which, as with the Niji 40 and The Transat CIC, overlaps with the\u00a0CIC Normandy Channel Race<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(starting on 15 September). The organiser of the CIC Normandy Channel Race, Manfred Ramspacher, is not fazed by this, as he is expecting\u00a0“around thirty boats, with virtually the entire top end of the field”,\u00a0<\/em>adding:\u00a0“It’s a very good thing that an event is developing in the Mediterranean, something that Class40 has been lacking<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

Eight new Class40s<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

As for the fleet,\u00a0eight new Class40s<\/strong><\/u><\/a>\u00a0are expected this year<\/strong>. Some have already been launched, such as the\u00a0<\/strong>new Guelfi\u00a0D\u00e9kuple\u00a0<\/em>designed by William Mathelin Moreaux, christened this week in Larmor-Plage. Also recently launched are the Evo 40\u00a0Scowling Dragon\u00a0<\/em>(skippered by\u00a0<\/em>the American Michael Hennessy), a\u00a0new Owen Clarke Design design<\/strong>, and Vincent Riou’s\u00a0Pierreval-Fondation Good Plan\u00e8te<\/em>, the latter having taken the Pogo S4 and come up with\u00a0an innovative concept with a single rudder and a keel incorporating a trimmer<\/strong>. An innovation\u00a0he recently said<\/u><\/a>:\u00a0“It’s a small flap that makes the keel profile asymmetrical<\/em>.\u00a0I think there’s a way of improving performance.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Another awaited Class40 is\u00a0Ian Lipinski’s new\u00a0<\/strong>Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel<\/strong><\/em>, which will be presented ahead of the start of The Transat CIC and will make its debut in the CIC Normandy Channel Race – the skipper is so far sailing 158, the first scow to be launched in summer 2019. One of the aims of this evolution of the Max 40 is to\u00a0“erase the deficit that the previous boat may have downwind<\/strong>\u00a0in medium winds and on reaching<\/em>,” explains her designer David Raison.\u00a0“As a result, the boat has taken on more shoulders at the front and\u00a0<\/strong>the lines have been tightened up to enable her to perform better in the trade winds”.<\/em><\/p>\n

Among the other optimisations, David Raison cites\u00a0“a larger roof, a much more sheltered and safer cockpit<\/strong>, a system of lifting rudders and a huge amount of work on the boat’s structure, carried out with Gurit Engineering, to gain in weight and reliability, resulting in a\u00a0fairly innovative structural mesh<\/strong>“<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A Mach 40.6, a Lift V3…<\/span>
\nand an Agit\u00e9 40!<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sam Manuard has also sought to\u00a0<\/strong>optimise the hull of his Mach 40.5 to\u00a0give birth to the Mach 40.6<\/strong>, whose first born, skippered by Quentin Le Nabour\u00a0(Bleu Blanc Plan\u00e8te Location<\/em>), will line up on The Transat CIC.\u00a0“The boat has a little more shoulder room up front and is a little tighter overall.<\/em>\u00a0We’ve made a lot of progress on reaching,<\/strong>\u00a0from 60 to 110 degrees off the wind, as well as on the ability to start planning under spinnaker a little earlier”<\/em>, explains the architect. A second Mach 40.6, for the American Greg Leonard, will be launched in the spring, before two others in 2025.<\/p>\n

Finally,\u00a0a Lift V3<\/strong>\u00a0designed by Lombard will complete the fleet<\/strong>\u00a0in December, that of Corentin Douguet who, after his Route du Rhum in 2022 on a Lift V2, wanted to go even further:\u00a0“We’ve tried to retain the strong points of the V2, the powerful upwind and reaching characteristics, while\u00a0optimising comfort and passage through the sea, downwind in particular<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0We’ve also greatly improved the ergonomics inside the cockpit, with a fairly panoramic view.”<\/em>\u00a0A second Lift V3 will be launched for Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Denis at the end of April 2025.<\/p>\n

C\u00e9dric de Kervenoa\u00ebl also announces that\u00a0“Michel Desjoyeaux is also working on the construction of a new Class40, the Agit\u00e9 40<\/strong><\/em>.“<\/em>\u00a0Contacted by\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>, the two-time winner of the Vend\u00e9e Globe confirms:\u00a0“It all started with an idea from Alexandre Le Gallais<\/strong>, who already owns two Class40s\u00a0<\/em>[the 115 and the 190, editor’s note],<\/em>\u00a0who wanted us to build\u00a0a first boat,<\/strong>\u00a0on which we’ll both be sailing in 2025, the aim being to produce several of them<\/em>.“<\/em><\/p>\n

Designed by\u00a0CT Mer Forte<\/strong>, the company he founded in 2009 with Denis Juhel and which was bought by the Spanish group CT Engineering at the end of 2020, and built in Port-la-For\u00eat by Mer Agit\u00e9e, this new design is expected to be ready by the end of the year. The aim is for it to be capable of\u00a0“sailing around the world<\/strong>“,<\/em>\u00a0according to Michel Desjoyeaux, who adds:\u00a0“We’re looking to\u00a0emphasise solidity<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0We’re also working on the ergonomics and on a closable cockpit – she’ll have a removable cap for inshore races – to enable the sailor to be more efficient.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\nthe Route du Rhum 2026?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Finally, on the second-hand market, a number of boats are still looking for takers, with C\u00e9dric de Kervenoa\u00ebl pointing out that\u00a0“some scows<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>are sometimes a little overpriced<\/strong>, at around \u20ac650,000, whereas a new boat, excluding sails and electronics, fetches around the same price<\/em>.\u00a0This surge in prices is due to the fact that, in recent months, boatyards have been unable to deliver new boats quickly.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The approach of the Route du Rhum 2026 should help to speed up the pace of transactions and\u00a0attract new<\/strong>\u00a0contenders\u00a0<\/strong>– this year, the former mini sailors Louis Mayaud\u00a0(Belco<\/em>) and Matteo Sericano\u00a0(Lucente<\/em>), and the former Figaro racer Yannig Livory\u00a0(Interaction<\/em>) are among those arriving.<\/p>\n

“But places will be hard to<\/em>\u00a0come by,”<\/em>\u00a0warns the class president,\u00a0“especially as\u00a0the Class40 quota for the Route du Rhum\u00a0is likely to be reduced from 55 to 40<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0We’re in the middle of discussions with the organiser, OC Sport Pen Duick, who would like to set up a qualification system, with a significant advantage given to participants in The Transat CIC\u00a0<\/em>[organised by OC Sport Pen Duick, editor’s note].“<\/em>\u00a0This doesn’t seem to be to everyone’s liking:\u00a0“The racers have had firm but constructive discussions this week with Joseph Bizard<\/em>\u00a0(general manager of OC Sport Pen Duick), and we have agreed to finalise our discussions quickly as\u00a0the situation is very worrying<\/strong><\/em>.“<\/em><\/p>\n
