72 solo sailors<\/a>\u00a0set off on 19 July on the first leg of the\u00a0Les Sables-Les A\u00e7ores-Les Sables<\/strong>\u00a0race between Vend\u00e9e and Horta. Even though the number of qualifying miles for the Mini Transat has been halved,\u00a0the race continues to fill up<\/strong>. Let’s take a closer look at this change and the line-up.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

“With 72 skippers taking part – 47 in the series and 25 in the proto category – and around fifteen on the waiting list, there is still a lot of interest in Les Sables-Les A\u00e7ores-Les Sables (SAS), which\u00a0is very popular, particularly for its stopover in Horta<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0points out Jo\u00ebl Zanoni, president of the Les Sables d’Olonne Vend\u00e9e Course au Large association, which organises this biennial event. Denis Hugues, race director since the race was launched in 2006, points out that\u00a0“there have been editions, in 2012 and 2014 in particular, with fewer than 40 boats. The fact that the race is full to capacity today is proof of the\u00a0dynamism of the class<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The major change for this 10th edition is that\u00a0the number of qualifying miles for the La Boulang\u00e8re Mini Transat has been halved<\/strong>\u00a0(from 2,600 to 1,300):\u00a0“We wanted to\u00a0rebalance the chances of taking part in the Mini Transat<\/strong>, as we realised that the SAS was mainly contested by racers with time and budget,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Romain Bigot, president of the Mini class. For Emmanuel Versace, organiser of the Mini Transat,\u00a0“it’s very good news for the championship\u00a0to be more varied in terms of profiles\u00a0<\/strong>and in particular to give Mediterranean skippers more chances to qualify”.<\/em><\/p>\n

The class president also highlights the desire to\u00a0“promote this event as a race in its own right<\/strong>, especially as it is circular, which we feel is very important from an environmental point of view”<\/em>. And Denis Hugues adds that even though\u00a0“it’s not necessarily a prerequisite for qualifying,\u00a0it still gives you a lot of experience<\/strong>, both in terms of the route and the weather.”<\/em><\/p>\n

As for the\u00a0budget for taking part<\/strong>, Groupe Satov skipper\u00a0Amaury Gu\u00e9rin<\/strong>\u00a0estimates it at\u00a0around \u20ac5,500<\/strong>, including \u20ac1,600 in entry fees, which\u00a0“covers a large part of the event’s budget, which is at least \u20ac150,000,”<\/em>\u00a0points out Jo\u00ebl Zanoni. The rest comes from the local authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“In proto, it’s going to be
\na very hard and fast fight”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What about the forces at work? In the proto class, the field includes many of the skippers who raced in the last Mini Transat, and\u00a0“it’s going to be a very hard and fast fight”<\/em>, according to Denis Hugues.\u00a0“There are around ten skippers who could be on the podium,”<\/em>\u00a0adds Romain Bigot. Among them,\u00a0Carlos Manera Pascual<\/strong>, who finished 2nd in the Mini Transat 2023 on\u00a0Xucla<\/em>, a Manuard design equipped with foils, and\u00a0“is getting a bit stronger with his recent experience in Class40<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>[Niji 40 with Xavier Macaire, editor’s note], so he’s quite a competitor”<\/em>, emphasises Emmanuel Versace.Also eagerly awaited is\u00a0Caroline Boule<\/strong>, on the second foiler in the fleet (Nicomatic<\/em>), who\u00a0“is starting to really master her boat,”<\/em>\u00a0explains the Mini Transat organiser. “I think the last few double-handed races with Beno\u00eet Marie\u00a0<\/em>[they won the Plastimo Lorient Mini]\u00a0have helped her a lot.”<\/em>\u00a0Marie Gendron<\/strong>\u00a0(L\u00e9a Nature<\/em>), winner this season of the Mini in May and 2nd in the Troph\u00e9e Marie-Agn\u00e8s P\u00e9ron, meanwhile, is back for a third appearance (7th in proto in 2022 and 11th in 2018).\u00a0“With her 4th place in the Mini Transat 2023, she’s clear about her ability to win and on the water, I think she’s\u00a0a real warrior,<\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0says Emmanuel Versace.<\/p>\n

The skipper, who is also preparing a project in Class40, points out that\u00a0“this is one of the rare editions with\u00a0a proto line-up where the level is so tight<\/strong>, with some ultra-high-performance machines. I’m mainly going to be chasing\u00a0Romain Van Enis<\/strong>\u00a0(Be Sailing) as I’m second by ten points in the French championship rankings. I’ll also have to watch out for\u00a0Alexandre Demange<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(DMG Mori Sailing Academy 2)\u00a0who’s right behind me.”<\/em>\u00a0The former has finished on the podium in all four races he has raced this season (winner of the Troph\u00e9e Marie-Agn\u00e8s P\u00e9ron), while the latter, who took over from Laure Galley on one of the Japanese team’s two protos, has notched up four podium finishes (victory in the Mini Fastnet with Beno\u00eet Mariette) and a 5th place.<\/p>\n

Also mentioned as favourites by our interviewees are\u00a0Julien Letissier<\/strong>\u00a0(Fr\u00e9rots Branchet<\/em>), 3rd in La Boulang\u00e8re Mini Transat 2023, and\u00a0F\u00e9lix Oberle<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Big Bounce<\/em>, the Raison design which has won the last two Mini Transat races, which\u00a0“also knows the SAS route well as the boat won with Pierre Le Roy<\/em>\u00a0[F\u00e9lix Oberle finished 5th].\u00a0This year, I’m going back there to gain experience, as it’s the best preparation for the Mini Transat.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the series, where the renewal of the fleet is more important, our experts inevitably mention\u00a0Amaury Gu\u00e9rin<\/strong>, winner this year of the Pornichet Select, the Mini en Mai and the Troph\u00e9e Marie-Agn\u00e8s P\u00e9ron.\u00a0“He’s a solid sailor with a good maritime background, including a solo expedition to the far north,”\u00a0<\/em>says Romain Bigot. For his part, Emmanuel Versace praises his\u00a0“storming start to the season.<\/strong>\u00a0He had a big blow to morale last year after an accident on the Mini in May, which he had to abandon, but now he’s back strong, serene and with some fine objectives.”\u00a0<\/em>What does Gu\u00e9rin himself think of being favourite?\u00a0“In the races I won, it wasn’t a clear dominance at all, the match was really close, so it’s not going to be easy.”<\/em>\u00a0Among his main rivals, our interviewees cite\u00a0Paul Cousin<\/strong>\u00a0(AFP Groupe Biocombustibles<\/em>), winner of the Plastimo Lorient Mini with Camille Croguennec, and\u00a0Quentin Mocudet<\/strong>\u00a0(Ascodal – Saverus & D\u00e9lices<\/em>), who won the Mini Fastnet with Margaux Chanceaulme and has always featured in the top 5 at the start of the season.<\/p>\n

Denis Hugues warns:\u00a0“As the SAS format is very different from the pre-season races,\u00a0it may not be the same people at the front.<\/strong>\u00a0We’re really going to have to get to grips with the weather phenomena, sleep, food, possible breakdowns and repairs. And the finish in the Azores can be really tricky if the high is there, so a lot can happen.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
