With the start of the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2024 set for November 10,\u00a0the next cycle is already underway<\/strong>\u00a0for many skippers and teams, with\u00a0boat building already underway<\/strong>\u00a0and the second-hand market coming to life.<\/em>\u00a0Tip & Shaft\u00a0takes stock.<\/em><\/p>\n

On November 8, 2020, as the 33 skippers crossed the start line of the ninth Vend\u00e9e Globe, Sam Manuard was just beginning work on the design of\u00a0Charal 2<\/em>, which will be launched in July 2022. J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou and his team’s goal was to have the new foiler ready for the Route du Rhum 2022. Four years later, with the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2024 still to get underway,\u00a0concrete plans for new boats for the next cycle have never been so numerous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One is already in the water, Phil Sharp’s Manuard\u00a0OceansLab<\/strong><\/em>, which failed to qualify in time for the Vend\u00e9e Globe; two others will soon be: Armel Tripon’s\u00a0Les P’tits Doudous<\/strong><\/em>, a VPLP design built in\u00a0Malizia-Seaexplorer<\/em>‘s molds, due next spring, and\u00a0Elodie Bonafous’ Verdier design<\/strong>, built in\u00a0Macif Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance<\/em>‘s molds, due to leave the yard in the first quarter of 2025. As for the other future Imoca boats, Multiplast is about to start building a new Verdier design for\u00a0Kojiro Shiraishi<\/strong>, \u201cand after that, we’re building\u00a0two others for two very good teams<\/strong>\u00a0who are doing a sistership\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>explains Yann Penfornis, the shipyard’s general manager, without disclosing the teams in question.<\/p>\n

Numerous players in the sector also indicate that\u00a0three construction slots have been reserved at CDK Technologies<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cIt’s not for me to make this kind of announcement,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0comments Yann Dollo, deputy general manager, \u201cbut we feel that interest in the Imoca is still strong. We made five boats for this campaign, and we’re capable of making as many, or even more for the next one.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0It has to be said that orders for new boats for the next cycle have never started so early. \u201cThis anticipation is clearly the significant fact of the new 2028 cycle<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0confirms Romain M\u00e9nard, director of Team Spirit Racing, the structure managing Yann Richomme’s project.\u00a0“There are a number of reasons for this: the Vend\u00e9e Globe popularity, the length of time it takes to design and build boats, and the rise of the Imoca circuit, which means that, in addition to selection and qualification issues, everyone is keen to take part to races\u00a0that are stronger than they were before.”<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Anticipating The Ocean Race<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Among these races,\u00a0The Ocean Race, which went Imoca in the last edition, counts for a lot<\/strong>\u00a0in the anticipation of orders, as the start of the next one, in January 2027, requires an early start.\u00a0“An Imoca boat takes six months to design, two months to make the tooling and a year to build, which is almost 20 months.<\/em>\u00a0If you want to do The Ocean Race, you have no choice but to get things started before the start of the Vend\u00e9e Globe”<\/em>, explains Antoine Koch, architect, with the Finot-Conq firm, of two boats lining up for the start of the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2024, Thomas Ruyant’s\u00a0Vulnerable<\/em>\u00a0and Yoann Richomme’s\u00a0Paprec Ark\u00e9a<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cWe’re starting earlier and earlier, as\u00a0the teams are also keen to spend more time on the water<\/strong>\u00a0before the Vend\u00e9e Globe, as foilers are boats which require a lot of time for reliability and fine-tuning\u201d<\/em>, adds David de Pr\u00e9morel, Managing Director of Finot-Conq.<\/p>\n

Are the latter and Antoine Koch among the architects already commissioned for the new boats listed above? Neither is willing to answer, but there’s little doubt that\u00a0Thomas Ruyant will call on their services for his future Imoca,\u00a0<\/strong>announced for 2026<\/strong><\/u><\/a>, when construction will be entrusted to CDK. Then\u00a0a boat for Boris Herrmann<\/strong>\u00a0would be launched in the same molds – again, no one wished to comment – with both skippers aiming to take part in The Ocean Race.<\/p>\n

Still on the CDK side,\u00a0a rumor from the pontoon<\/strong><\/u><\/a>\u00a0evokes a new Imoca coming soon for Banque Populaire<\/strong>. Thierry Bouvard, director of sponsorship and patronage for Groupe BPCE, replied\u201cNo comment\u201d<\/em>, while Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac’h,\u00a0interviewed by us<\/u><\/a>\u00a0a month ago before the start of the Finist\u00e8re Atlantique, said:\u00a0“Today, the Vend\u00e9e Globe remains a major event that\u00a0Banque Populaire follows closely<\/strong>.<\/em>\u00a0We’re not taking part this year, for reasons we know, but we’re keeping a close eye on what’s happening on the Imoca circuit.<\/em>\u00a0We’ll let this edition pass and Banque Populaire will communicate afterwards on its intentions to make, or not, a return to the event.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Would it be possible for\u00a0Banque Populaire and Franck Cammas<\/strong>, who confirms that the Imoca is currently his\u00a0\u201cpriority project, as long as it’s on a new boat and with the means to win the two major events, The Ocean Race and the Vend\u00e9e Globe\u201d,<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0team up<\/strong>? \u201cI know Ronan Lucas\u00a0<\/em>(director of Team Banque Populaire)\u00a0very well<\/em>, he’s almost a childhood friend, but\u00a0no comment<\/strong><\/em>,”\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>smiles Cammas,\u00a0\u201dwho is looking for partners”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

New boats will no longer
\nbe protected<\/span><\/h2>\n

As for the two sisterships\u00a0mentioned by Yann Penfornis for Multiplast, rumors are rife, notably about\u00a0a new boat for Yoann Richomme<\/strong>\u00a0(the first has already been built in Vannes). One thing is certain: the winner of The Transat CIC 2024, who will compete in The Ocean Race Europe in 2025, makes no secret of his ambitions to continue after his first Vend\u00e9e Globe, and in particular to compete in The Ocean Race in 2027.\u00a0\u201cYoann and the team have a real appetite for the project<\/strong>, and it’s also resonating strongly with the sponsors, because you’re talking about eight to ten starts and finishes, plus the in-shore events, so there are plenty of opportunities to activate the partnership\u201d<\/em>, confirms Romain M\u00e9nard.<\/p>\n

Interviewed in\u00a0Pos. Report last Tuesday<\/u><\/a>, Paprec Group Managing Director S\u00e9bastien Petithuguenin commented:\u00a0\u201cOn these projects, you can’t buy time, so\u00a0we’re in the process of projecting what a new boat could be<\/strong>, and decisions on whether or not to build one are currently being made.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Other skippers who have announced their intention to build a new Imoca include Louis Burton,\u00a0who did so in April<\/u><\/a>, presumably with Sam Manuard.\u00a0\u201cWe haven’t started the work phase yet, but the will is there, and\u00a0it will get underway in due course<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>, says the architect.<\/p>\n

With a view to the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028,\u00a0new boats will in any case no longer be exempt from selection process<\/strong>, the new qualification\/selection rules will be unveiled\u00a0by the\u00a0SAEM Vend\u00e9e, the race organizer, during the week preceding the start of the 2024 edition. \u201cThe new system has brought many positive benefits<\/strong>, with more people at the start of the races, and better-prepared boats and sailors, On the other hand, we’ve seen some limitations, between Louis Burton’s two dismastings, injuries and Clarisse\u00a0<\/em>(Cr\u00e9mer)‘s maternity leave, there have also been a lot of races that have put a strain on the skippers, and\u00a0the idea is to come up with a project that responds to these limitations<\/strong>“<\/em>, comments Imoca class president Antoine Mermod.<\/p>\n

The second-hand market is starting<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

This exemption will perhaps boost a second-hand market that is more than quivering – 18 boats are for sale to date\u00a0on the Imoca website<\/u><\/a>\u00a0-, with\u00a0strong interest in the foilers of the 2020 and 2024 generations<\/strong>\u00a0that are or will be on the market. According to our information, 11th Hour Racing Team has already pre-empted the current\u00a0Malizia-Seaexplorer<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0Francesca Clapcich<\/strong>\u00a0– when contacted, the latter replied that she was\u00a0\u201cexploring options, but nothing is confirmed yet\u201d<\/em>. Other coveted boats include Thomas Ruyant’s two\u00a0Vulnerables<\/em>\u00a0(on the market at the end of 2025) and Sam Goodchild’s, as well as\u00a0DMG Mori Global One<\/em>\u00a0(Verdier’s 2019 design, priced at\u00a0\u201caround 4 million euros\u201d<\/em>, according to the Japanese team). Or even those from the 2016 generation and updated, such as Damien Seguin’s current\u00a0Groupe Apicil<\/em>. The price range can go from 750,000 euros for Louis Duc’s current boat to 5 million, or even more, for the latest generation.<\/p>\n

Potential buyers include Canadian\u00a0Scott Shawyer<\/strong>, who is first looking to sell the former\u00a0Acciona<\/em>\u00a0(\u20ac1.35m),\u00a0Edouard Golbery<\/strong>, looking for partners to launch in 2026, or\u00a0Gaston Morvan<\/strong>, fresh French Elite ocean racing champion and not far from the goal.\u00a0\u201cI’m still half a budget short of what’s needed to sail four great seasons from 2025, with a project to buy a 2024-generation hydrofoil boat.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Among the skippers whom\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>\u00a0contacted to find out their post-Vend\u00e9e Globe intentions,\u00a0many are keen to sign up for a new cycle<\/strong>. This is the case for Maxime Sorel, whose partners will stop after the 2024 Vend\u00e9e Globe, and who wants to continue on his current boat (Verdier design from 2022), or for S\u00e9bastien Marsset, Fabrice Amedeo or Louis Duc, but on higher-performance Imoca boats –\u00a0\u201cI’d love to get into foilers\u201d<\/em>, confides the latter.<\/p>\n

Some also have\u00a0their sights set on The Ocean Race<\/strong>, such as Yannick Bestaven, who\u00a0\u201cwould then like to accompany a skipper for the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028\u201d<\/em>, Alan Roura with the Swiss Offshore Team, and Romain Attanasio, who is worried, however, that\u00a0\u201cthe economy is getting tighter for all sorts of reasons\u201d<\/em>. Finally, there are those who have no immediate plans to set sail again, like Tanguy Le Turquais, who confides:\u00a0\u201cI don’t want the Vend\u00e9e Globe to become routine and something normal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
