40 skippers<\/em><\/u><\/a> set sail on Sunday for the 10th edition of the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/em>.<\/em>\u00a0Tip & Shaft\u00a0has enlisted the help of four of the event’s winners,\u00a0Michel Desjoyeaux\u00a0<\/strong>(2000 and 2008),\u00a0Vincent Riou<\/strong>\u00a0(2004),\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Gabart\u00a0<\/strong>(2012) and\u00a0Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac’h\u00a0<\/strong>(2016), as well as sailors\u00a0Christopher Pratt<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Franck Cammas<\/strong>, to assess the field.<\/em><\/p>\n

Of the 40 Imoca boats in the running, including 13 new boats,\u00a0\u201caround ten can win<\/strong>\u00a0and around twenty can finish on the\u00a0the podium\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>according to Christopher Pratt, who adds:\u00a0\u201cThe density of the field is certainly unprecedented<\/strong>, and the level of preparation of the skippers and their machines is constantly improving, so we can expect boat speeds to increase and race times to decrease, if the weather cooperates.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Vincent Riou agrees:\u00a0“They’re prepared in a way that’s never been the case<\/strong>\u00a0at the start of a Vend\u00e9e, because the race for qualifying miles forced everyone to sail<\/em>.\u00a0What’s more, at the beginning of October, the Finist\u00e8re ocean racing training center organized a 24-hour outing in over 30 knots and heavy seas. I didn’t think anyone would turn up, but they all did.<\/em>\u00a0You still need a certain level of confidence<\/strong>\u00a0to go on a committed outing like that, ten days before the start for Les Sables.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Although it was difficult for our experts to pinpoint a podium finish, in the end it was\u00a0Charlie Dalin<\/strong>\u00a0(Macif Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance)<\/em>\u00a0who came out on top by a narrow margin ahead of Yoann Richomme (Paprec Ark\u00e9a<\/em>), followed by J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou (Charal<\/em>), tied with Thomas Ruyant (Vulnerable<\/em>).<\/p>\n

\u201cCharlie Dalin, the metronome\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe one who ticks the most boxes is still\u00a0Charlie Dalin<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d says Vincent Riou.\u00a0He still has a lot of energy and knows the event without having taken part many times\u00a0<\/em>[second participation, 2nd in 2021], which is an important point, as it’s a race that wears you out.”<\/em>\u00a0What’s more, the skipper from Le Havre, winner of this year’s New York Vend\u00e9e and D\u00e9fi Azimut, and of the Fastnet Race in 2023, can count on\u00a0\u201ca versatile boat\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>[Plan Verdier to be launched in June 2023],\u00a0very good at transitions<\/strong>, which enables him to get out of light wind zones a little more quickly than the others, which can be interesting on the way down or up the Atlantic\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>stresses Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac’h.<\/p>\n

According to Franck Cammas,\u00a0\u201cit’s not the most comfortable boat with the most margin in heavy seas downwind, and\u00a0it will certainly have to take a few more risks<\/strong>\u00a0to keep up the pace in the Antarctic, but Charlie is one of those with the most experience on this type of boat,\u00a0he’s a metronome<\/strong>, he’s very rigorous and leaves nothing to chance.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Gabart, who hosts the Le Havre-based sailor’s project within his MerConcept team, is very confident that\u00a0\u201cthe boat is capable of going fast in southern conditions, even if this hasn’t yet been proven in racing, as Charlie was absent from the Transat Jacques Vabre and Retour \u00e0 La Base\u00a0<\/em>[due to a medical problem].\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Second on our experts’ podium,\u00a0Yoann Richomme\u00a0<\/strong>“knows how to press hard, he has a very high pace and has proved he can win<\/em>\u00a0[winner of The Transat CIC and Retour \u00e0 La Base],\u00a0<\/em>comments Franck Cammas.\u00a0His level goes up a notch every time he goes solo<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0Christopher Pratt adds that\u00a0\u201chis Imoca seems ideal for this race, especially for big sea states and downwind sailing.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Any weak points?\u00a0\u201cAs the boat is a little heavy, she’s a little less at ease than some in light airs and transition phases,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>he replies. And Franck Cammas adds that\u00a0\u201cthe Koch designs have a weak point upwind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And if the two-time winner of the Solitaire du Figaro (2016 and 2019) and the Route du Rhum in Class40 (2018 and 2022) is a rookie on this Vend\u00e9e Globe, Christopher Pratt considers that\u00a0\u201cthis freshness can be an asset.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0As for Michel Desjoyeaux, he believes that\u00a0“the media-router exercise that Yoann did four years ago\u00a0<\/em>[notably for\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>]\u00a0was very clever because it allowed him to immerse himself in the logic of strategy.<\/em>\u00a0And with the experience he has in Figaro,\u00a0I don’t see why he should have any problems over time<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“He’s ready to go\u00a0for this victory\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the third step is\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou<\/strong>, 2nd in Retour \u00e0 La Base and 3rd in the New York Vend\u00e9e, who is about to race his fifth Vend\u00e9e Globe (3rd in 2016-2017). He’s back\u00a0\u201cwith a lot of experience, which is a great asset,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>says Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac’h.\u00a0And he’s got a boat with potential that he’s made reliable with a big team.<\/em>\u00a0After that, it’s all down to the mindset, because he\u00a0has a mindset that can either help or hinder him<\/strong>, but I know he’s worked on it and that he’s ready to go for this victory.”<\/em>\u00a0For Franck Cammas, J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou’s co-skipper on the last Transat Jacques Vabre,\u00a0\u201cJ\u00e9r\u00e9mie has to keep his morale up to get through the difficult moments and technical problems, because\u00a0he can take the blow a little harder than the others<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The latter also praises the characteristics of his 2022 Manuard design, which\u00a0\u201cis\u00a0a very good compromise for the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0While Christopher Pratt, former co-skipper of J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou, confirms the performance of this Imoca, he points out that it\u00a0\u201cis also a little more complex than the others<\/strong>, with more systems, and therefore perhaps more demanding to sail well.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Another big favorite is\u00a0Thomas Ruyant<\/strong>, competing in his third Vend\u00e9e Globe on a Koch-Finot-Conq (2023) design,\u00a0<\/strong>who\u00a0\u201cdoesn’t have the same racing profile as the previous three,<\/em>\u00a0according to Michel Desjoyeaux,\u00a0but knows how to manage his race, go fast, keep up the pace and be technical enough to manage his equipment.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Franck Cammas praises\u00a0Thomas’s\u00a0\u201calways positive\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>spirit, which enables him to get back up the slope and stay in the game despite the difficulties.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0For his part, Fran\u00e7ois Gabart points out that the skipper from the north of France\u00a0\u201cexcelled in double-handed racing, winning two Transat Jacques Vabre races with Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re, as well as the Route du Rhum, so I have<\/em>\u00a0few doubts about his talent as a sailor to perform solo<\/strong>\u00a0on a round-the-world race.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ten other favorites on the list<\/span><\/h2>\n

Behind this quartet, our experts believe that several skippers are also capable of challenging for victory, such as\u00a0Boris Herrmann\u00a0<\/strong>(Malizia-SeaExplorer<\/em>), 2nd in The Transat CIC and the New-York Vend\u00e9e, who is returning to race his second Vend\u00e9e Globe aboard a VPLP design\u00a0\u201cvery comfortable downwind, which was tested in the southern seas in The Ocean Race\u201d<\/em>, according to Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac’h. Also mentioned is\u00a0Sam Goodchild<\/strong>\u00a0(Vulnerable<\/em>), who has\u00a0\u201ca slightly older boat\u00a0<\/em>[a 2019 Verdier design]\u00a0but which is still very efficient and can keep up without any problems\u201d<\/em>, according to Michel Desjoyeaux, who also mentions\u00a0Sam Davies<\/strong>\u00a0(Initiatives Coeur<\/em>), 3rd in The Transat CIC and\u00a0\u201cback to her best\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0Christopher Pratt, for his part, points to\u00a0Nicolas Lunven<\/strong>\u00a0(Holcim PRB<\/em>) and\u00a0Paul Meilhat\u00a0<\/strong>(Biotherm<\/em>)\u00a0\u201cwho have boats that are a little less suited to heavy downwind seas, but who are super-solid skippers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

For Fran\u00e7ois Gabart,\u00a0\u201cit’s hard not to mention the previous winner,\u00a0Yannick Bestaven\u00a0<\/strong>(<\/em>Ma\u00eetre CoQ), even if his latest results so far haven’t matched his previous Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Other outsiders include\u00a0Damien Seguin<\/strong>\u00a0(Groupe Apicil<\/em>),\u00a0Justine Mettraux\u00a0<\/strong>(Teamwork-Team Snef<\/em>),\u00a0Maxime Sorel<\/strong>\u00a0(V and B-Monbana-Mayenne<\/em>),\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Simon<\/strong>\u00a0(Groupe Dubreuil<\/em>) and\u00a0Louis Burton\u00a0<\/strong>(Bureau Vall\u00e9e<\/em>).<\/p>\n

As for the daggerboard Imocas,\u00a0\u201cif they were still able to compete a little with the foiling boats four years ago, this time they’re really going to be a long way ahead\u201d<\/em>, predicts Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac’h. Among them,\u00a0\u201cJean Le Cam<\/strong>\u00a0(Tout\u00a0<\/em>Commence en Finist\u00e8re-Armor Lux)\u00a0seems to have the best boat\u00a0<\/em>[2023 Raison design]\u00a0and the most experience, even if we haven’t seen him sail yet\u201d<\/em>, notes Christopher Pratt.\u00a0Benjamin Ferr\u00e9\u00a0<\/strong>(Monnoyeur-Duo for a job<\/em>),\u00a0Tanguy Le Turquais<\/strong>\u00a0(Lazare<\/em>) and\u00a0Violette Dorange\u00a0<\/strong>(Devenir<\/em>) are also among the front-runners for daggerboard boats, with Fran\u00e7ois Gabart reminding us that\u00a0\u201cthe randomness and length of the exercise\u201d\u00a0<\/em>mean that predictions are often foiled.
