Borja Nebreda<\/a>, founder of\u00a0Biscay Composites<\/a>, has extensive experience in the\u00a0construction and refits\u00a0of high-tech boats<\/strong>. With pivotal roles at King Marine for Artemis Racing’s AC72 during the 2013 America’s Cup and at Persico for the VOR65 in the 2017-2018 Volvo Ocean Race, he served as the\u00a0composite manager for\u00a0Boris Herrmann’s Team Malizia<\/strong>\u00a0during the construction of\u00a0Malizia-Seaexplorer<\/em>, enhancing his composite technology expertise.<\/p>\n

Driven by his extensive background, Borja established Biscay Composites in late 2022 in Cantabria.\u00a0\u201cIt was time to set up my own structure,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he says with a smile.\u00a0He was\u00a0quickly contacted by the Hungarian\u00a0Szalbocs We\u00f6res<\/a><\/strong>, a candidate in the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2024:\u00a0\u201cHe asked me to carry out a comprehensive refit of his Imoca\u00a0<\/em>New Europe\u00a0which included lowering the cockpit, revamping the deckhouse, overhauling all deck fittings and applying fresh paint.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Biscay Composites\u2019 team, formed of expert boatbuilders met during Borja\u2019s shipyard tenure, took up the challenge,\u00a0swiftly attracting other Imoca clients like the Guyot Environnement-Water Family team<\/strong>. They entrusted Borja Nebrada with the creation of two new rudders, a two-meter bow section, and a new bowsprit.\u00a0“They reacted very quickly, launching the molds and building the parts in Spain before landing in Les Sables for five weeks.\u00a0Their ability to rapidly prototype and execute complex refits was remarkable,”<\/em>\u00a0says Thomas Cardrin, boat captain and technical supervisor for the Vend\u00e9e-based team.<\/p>\n

Julien Bigot, the composite manager on\u00a0Arnaud Boissi\u00e8res’\u00a0Imoca\u00a0La Mie C\u00e2line<\/em>, who called on the Spaniards for the 2023-2024 winter refit<\/strong>, echoed the same positive feedback:\u00a0“Biscay Composites was super-responsive, immediately proposing\u00a0solutions, deadlines and competitive rates.\u00a0They managed to find a rhythm so as not to disrupt our own team.”<\/em>\u00a0When the team needed\u00a0an emergency repair<\/strong>\u00a0on the Imoca damaged\u00a0after a collision with a fishing boat just before the last D\u00e9fi Azimut in September, Julien Bigot didn’t hesitate:\u00a0\u201cWe had 6m\u00b2 destroyed just in front of the foil, I called Borja who immediately set up a plan of action with his team, they managed to repair in a week and a half,\u00a0they were super efficient!<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

“In our work, we prioritize understanding each team’s needs and optimize processes\u00a0to build closer relationships<\/strong>\u00a0than larger companies can offer. We strive to be integral to each project, sharing our clients’ enthusiasm and motivation”<\/em>, says the founder of Biscay Composites. Since then, the Spanish team, now seasoned in commando-style missions, has undertaken numerous projects, including the deck renovation of\u00a0Ecureuil d’Aquitaine<\/strong><\/em>, the winner of the first Vend\u00e9e Globe, ballast modifications on\u00a0Freelance.com<\/em><\/strong>, mast repairs on\u00a0Initiatives C\u0153ur<\/em><\/strong>, a composite refit\u00a0and a complete paint job on\u00a0Groupe Dubreuil<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Guyot Environnement-Water Family<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The team is currently in Italy, working on\u00a0the construction of\u00a0a new vessel for Giovanni Soldini<\/strong>\u00a0and finalizing a new 1000m\u00b2 facility<\/strong>\u00a0in Santander\u00a0to better accommodate professional teams and their high-demand projects.\u00a0\u201cWith this expansion,\u00a0we are ready for new challenges<\/a>\u00a0and opportunities<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>, smiles Borja Nebreda.<\/p>\n
