France’s leading sailmaker with a turnover of 26 million euros and 200 employees, Incidence Sails<\/a>\u00a0was once again out in force in the Vend\u00e9e Globe with\u00a014 Imoca boats equipped and… a double podium finish<\/strong>.\u00a0Yoann Richomme<\/strong>, second on Paprec Ark\u00e9a, and\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Simon<\/strong>, third on Groupe Dubreuil, opted for a set of 100% Incidence Sails, made from the\u00a0DFi filament membrane<\/a>, which is produced in\u00a0Incidence Technologies’<\/a>\u00a0La Rochelle premises, the only ones of its kind in Europe.<\/p>\n

“These results are obviously a source of pride for all our teams and\u00a0a great showcase for the group<\/strong>, because they demonstrate our know-how and prove that our DFi technology has now reached maturity,\u00a0<\/em>says\u00a0Pierre-Antoine Morvan<\/a>, who heads up Incidence Sails\u2019 ocean racing and superyacht divisions.\u00a0“Yoann only suffered a broken jib batten<\/em>\u00a0and Seb had a tiny tear in one sail following the mishandling of another, but it was all very minor.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Marjorie Huonnic<\/a>, who is in charge of communications and marketing at the sailmaker, adds:\u00a0“A double podium finish in the Vend\u00e9e Globe directly boosts our sales in ocean racing, but it is also\u00a0good for our other sectors of activity<\/strong>: if we’re capable of making sails that finish the Vend\u00e9e Globe without breaking, that means we can meet a demand for reliable sails for superyachts or IRCs, bearing in mind that we look after an Imoca skipper in the same way as a customer who has a JPK 10.10 and will be able to have his sails made to measure in DFi with a dedicated designer.”<\/em><\/p>\n

For the 2024-2025 edition of the Vend\u00e9e Globe,\u00a0five Incidence Sails designers worked on the design of the 90 sails produced<\/strong>, with, for some, a relationship of trust built up with their “client”\u00a0skippers.\u00a0“Yoann is very attached to our brand and to a designer,\u00a0Ronan Floch<\/a>, with whom he has worked for a long time. He won his two Solitaire du Figaro and two Route du Rhum races with sails designed by Ronan”,\u00a0<\/em>explains Pierre-Antoine Morvan.\u00a0“However, that doesn’t mean that coming with us in this Vend\u00e9e Globe was a foregone conclusion.\u00a0We had to prove our ability to meet the demands<\/strong>\u00a0of his team, particularly in terms of numerical calculations\u2019”<\/em><\/p>\n

S\u00e9bastien Simon, who was already equipped with Incidence Sails for his previous Vend\u00e9e Globe, worked with another designer,\u00a0Maxime Paul<\/a>.\u00a0“What’s interesting is that\u00a0with Ronan, we were able to work closely together<\/strong>, freely exchanging our techniques and applications. These discussions have been very enriching and have enabled us to combine our expertise,”<\/em>\u00a0he explains.<\/p>\n

The exchanges with the Imoca teams are also invaluable:\u00a0“Today, we’re dealing with teams that are increasingly staffed, so\u00a0we are very challenged<\/strong>\u00a0and we learn a lot”,<\/em>\u00a0confirms Pierre-Antoine Morvan.\u00a0“On the other hand, on projects like Guirec Soud\u00e9e’s, the approach is different, with complete support, from fitting the sails to understanding how to use them, a criterion that is particularly important to his team.\u00a0We offer total customisation,<\/strong>\u00a0both for the sails and the service.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On the strength of this already successful Vend\u00e9e Globe, the Incidence Sails teams are looking ahead to the next Imoca cycle, working in particular with the class on\u00a0the issue of\u00a0green sail<\/strong>,\u00a0an important challenge.\u00a0“We’re starting off on a good footing in this area, since\u00a0we source everything in Europe<\/strong>, none of our products are air-shipped, and our production is local since the membranes are made in La Rochelle and transported on foot, the floor is 50 metres away!”\u00a0<\/em>recalls Marjorie Huonnic.\u00a0“Of course, this doesn’t stop us from working to improve our processes and recycled or bio-sourced materials as part of our R&D approach.”<\/em><\/p>\n
