After\u00a0the Ocean Fifty class<\/a>\u00a0last week, we continue our tour of the classes with, this Friday,\u00a0<\/em>the Figaro Beneteau class<\/em><\/strong>, which continues to focus on\u00a0 diversity gender and youth training, a strategy that seems to be bearing fruit, with registrations on the rise and boats\u00a0not depreciating in value despite the tense economic climate. The only fly in the ointment is the financing of the races, and therefore the calendar.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Solo Guy Cotten<\/strong>, one of the four events in the 2025 French Elite ocean racing championship, will open the Figaro Beneteau class season from March 22 to 29, with\u00a0the calendar unveiled<\/a>\u00a0this week. This\u00a0event is also open this\u00a0year to double-handed as part of the Academy, the scheme designed to promote access to the circuit.\u00a0“This sums up the current\u00a0state of mind which\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>to offer versatile races, where as many people as possible can get involved<\/em><\/strong>,”\u00a0<\/em>sums up Irish Marcus Hutchinson, vice-president of the class.<\/p>\n

Julie Royer Coutts, General Manager of OC Sport Pen Duick, which organizes the Transat Paprec and Solitaire du Figaro Paprec, adds that\u00a0“<\/em>the mayonnaise is taking off<\/em><\/strong>“,\u00a0<\/em>delighted to see that for the double-handed transatlantic race\u00a0“entries are increasing\u00a0and the format has found its audience”<\/em>. For its second edition in mixed doubles, the transatlantic race will welcome\u00a0no fewer than twenty duos, compared with just eleven in 2023.\u00a0<\/strong>“We may have been short of fighters in the past, so we had to get past the critics. What’s really positive is that this is bringing out\u00a0<\/em>‘mercenary’ profiles in women sailors\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>that only men had before,”\u00a0<\/em>comments El\u00e9onore de Grissac, general secretary of the class.<\/p>\n

The latter names\u00a0Estelle Greck, partnered by Victor Le Pape, Sophie Faguet, with Jules Ducelier, and Mathilde G\u00e9ron who will be lining up alongside Martin Le Pape. All of these pairs could come to play spoilsport against the favorite duo of Charlotte Yven and Hugo Dhallenne on\u00a0Skipper Macif<\/em>, the defending champion.\u00a0“Above all, behind the scenes,\u00a0<\/em>it allows more and more women to go solo<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0They\u00a0will be at least ten\u00a0this year on the Solitaire”\u00a0<\/em>adds El\u00e9onore de Grissac, who expects the total number of entrants\u00a0to be “roughly equivalent to 2024”<\/em>, (37). The\u00a0Paprec Challenge<\/strong>, which gives\u00a0the newcomers the opportunity to discover the\u00a0Solitaire by racing\u00a0the first leg double-handed, will be repeated, with around ten tandems expected.<\/p>\n

“A good generation of 18-24 year olds”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

The diversification of profiles also applies\u00a0foreign skippers<\/strong>, such as American Erica Lush, Britons Ellen Driver and Catherine Hunt, and Maggie Adamson and Calanach Finlayson, who recently won the offshore mixed doubles world championship. All these sailors may well have been\u00a0inspired by\u00a0last year’s Solitaire winner Tom Dolan<\/strong>, who will be defending his title in 2025.<\/p>\n

But it’s\u00a0the younger generation in that the class continues to particular<\/strong>\u00a0attract,\u00a0<\/strong>with profiles such as\u00a0sailor Cindy Brin, from Saint-Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my, Hugo Cardon, or Typhaine Rideau and Pier Paolo Dean, who will be racing the Transat Paprec together but are also looking to go solo. Set up since 2023 to attract them,\u00a0the Academy will feature nine races in 2025<\/strong>, including the Tour Voile, which still requires two crew members under the age of 26 on board.\u00a0“The Academy enables us to have sailors who then build up their career in the class over several years,”\u00a0<\/em>enthuses El\u00e9onore de Grissac.<\/p>\n

After racing theTour Voile crew last year\u00a0alongside the experienced Basile Bourgnon and Pep Costa, 21-year-old Titouan Marilley will for example be making his solo debut.\u00a0“The Figaro today is\u00a0<\/em>the perfect blend of\u00a0dinghy sailing and ocean racing<\/em><\/strong>,” sums up the skipper from Le Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer.\u00a0The Tour Voile really boosted the dynamic, and today we’re a good generation of 18-24 year-olds.\u00a0<\/em>And in terms of investment, the Figaro 3 is a safe bet<\/em><\/strong>. Virtually all the boats are sailing, whereas a few\u00a0 years ago, there were some on dry land.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A sign of the good class’\u00a0health the\u00a0second-hand\u00a0market is still buoyant<\/strong>, with several new boats even sold over the winter. “Above all, the calendar is so intense and varied that\u00a0<\/em>more and more sailors are sharing boats\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>the same season,” says\u00a0<\/em>Marcus Hutchinson, himself owner of four boats that will\u00a0“sail in virtually all the races, but with\u00a0different skippers. It’ s<\/em>a good way of adapting the business model\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>in an\u00a0 unfavorable context for finding budget.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A\u00a0“small revolution”
\non communication<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Still looking for partners for the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028 Martin Le Pape has also come back to the Figaro 3, which he sees as\u00a0“<\/em>a safe haven<\/em><\/strong>, a bit like gold in times of economic crisis”.\u00a0<\/em>He adds:\u00a0“<\/em>The class has stood the\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>test<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>time, while remaining an undisputed benchmark<\/em><\/strong>, a must, as we saw again in the Vend\u00e9e Globe. If you really want to know your level on the water, you have to do the Figaro.”\u00a0<\/em>His only regret:\u00a0“<\/em>That there aren’t more old-timers coming back to do the Solitaire<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0It used to be done a lot, it added spice and got more\u00a0media coverage and therefore better returns on investment for sponsors.”<\/em><\/p>\n

With a view to improving this aspect, at the end of 2024 the class members voted in favor of\u00a0“a small revolution”\u00a0<\/em>in communications, namely a system to\u00a0facilitate the sending of on-board images while continuing to restrict the reception of datas<\/strong>.\u00a0“We needed to catch up. It’s not a question of denying ourselves, just moving with the times,”\u00a0<\/em>explains Marcus Hutchinson. “It was\u00a0 a quite technical challenge, especially on such a small boat. It puts severe constraints on the choice of equipment and energy consumption,”\u00a0<\/em>explains Beno\u00eet Marsille of ROM-arrang\u00e9, who worked on the subject alongside the class and Teem.<\/p>\n

In the end, it’s the Starlink Mini antenna,\u00a0coupled with a box that will limit feeds, that will be installed on board all Figaro Beneteau 3s\u00a0for the Transat Paprec and Solitaire du Figaro Paprec in 2025<\/strong>, and will be mandatory in 2026 for all championship races. “Technically, it’s ideal, even if ethically, it raises questions,”\u00a0<\/em>Beno\u00eet Marsille.\u00a0Cost of installation? 1,600 euros per boat<\/strong>. While the class has contributed financially to the development of the device, OC Sport is financing a third of the sum this year, with the remainder going to the racers and owners.<\/p>\n

Constrained budgetary races<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Despite this good overall picture, the context economic remains the black spot of this 2025 season, both for skippers and for race organizers, whose public-private financing model is being challenged.\u00a0<\/strong>“The climate is inevitably complicated, the deadlines are getting longer and the\u00a0process decision-making even longer, which means that the 2025 course has not yet been finalized<\/em>,” explains Emmanuel Bachellerie,\u00a0managing director of Ultim Sailing, organizer of the Tour Voile, which will be raced in Figaro 3s until at least 2029.\u00a0We’re very careful to work hand in hand with the local authorities. Given the climate,\u00a0<\/em>if we get between 14 and 17 boats, we’ll be happy<\/em><\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“We know that\u00a0the years 2025 and 2026 are going to be rather gray<\/em><\/strong>, so we have to manage to align everyone’s stakes,”\u00a0<\/em>agrees Julie Royer Coutts,\u00a0general manager of OC Sport Pen Duick, which has renewed its agreement with the Figaro group to organize the Solitaire until 2036, but has lost key partners, Loire-Atlantique and the Pays de la Loire region. Hence, once again,\u00a0delay in announcing the course for the 2025 edition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The organizer and the class also differ on the date of the event. While the skippers and the class want to keep it at the end of the summer as the sporting highlight of the season,\u00a0OC Sport Pen Duick is pushing to bring the forward to event June<\/strong>. “Ten years ago, local authorities wanted to liven up the summer season for tourists, but today\u00a0their interests are more focused on their inhabitants and the fact that the town is alive all year round,”\u00a0<\/em>explains Julie Royer Coutts.<\/p>\n

Joseph Bizard,\u00a0 Manager General of OC Sport, is more direct:\u00a0“We feel that in these somewhat difficult times,\u00a0<\/em>the race must be well\u00a0 positioned\u00a0in the calendar<\/em><\/strong>, because it’s a jewel to be preserved. Even if it’s not the official reason, it’s also one of the reasons why the Loire-Atlantique d\u00e9partement pulled out, as it for them to was becoming complicated to organize a race in the off-season. That’s why we’re having discussions – and disagreements – with the class about repositioning it in the pre-season, and\u00a0<\/em>thus enabling it to have more spin-offs<\/em><\/strong>.”\u00a0<\/em>Marcus Hutchinson doesn’t play down , this reality even though he believes in\u00a0“new inventing models:\u00a0<\/em>we have to do more with less<\/em><\/strong>. But we’ve got everything we need to keep up the good work.”<\/em><\/p>\n
