After winning the Vend\u00e9e Globe in January, <\/em>Charlie Dalin\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>was determined to continue his momentum in 2025 on the Imoca circuit aboard\u00a0<\/em>Macif Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance.\u00a0A medical unforeseen event<\/em>\u00a0changed the situation, forcing his team and his sponsor to make a rare decision:\u00a0<\/em>the 2025 season will be without him, but with Sam Goodchild\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>, seconded by Lo \u00efs Berrehar. Explanations.<\/em><\/p>\n

The bad news\u00a0fell on Tuesday, June 24<\/a>. After having to give up\u00a0\u201cfor medical reasons\u201d\u00a0<\/em>to run the Course des Caps which starts on Sunday from Boulogne-sur-Mer,\u00a0Charlie Dalin will not participate in the D\u00e9fi Azimut in September, nor in the Transat Caf\u00e9 L’Or<\/strong>\u00a0(starting on October 26). It is the British sailor\u00a0Sam Goodchild<\/strong>\u00a0who will replace him throughout the 2025 season at the helm of the Imoca Macif\u00a0Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance<\/em>, assisted by\u00a0Lo\u00efs Berrehar<\/strong>, ex Skipper Macif in Figaro (2022-2024) and now engaged with Banque Populaire – he is expecting his future Imoca in spring 2027 (see our article<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n

“This was a difficult decision to make, but\u00a0health must come first<\/strong>,<\/em>\u00a0commented the Le Havre native in the press release sent Tuesday.\u00a0I\u2019m obviously disappointed not to be able to sail this season, but I have full confidence in Sam and Lo\u00efs to carry the colors of MACIF Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance high. The team remains fully committed, and I will be following their progress with great pride and support\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

This rare announcement, the team and its sponsor have been preparing for it behind the scenes for several weeks, even though the decision has been taken\u00a0“with a heavy heart,”\u00a0<\/em>confides to\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>\u00a0Jean-Marc Simon<\/a>, health and welfare director at Macif, before adding :\u00a0“Over the weeks, we collectively understood, including Charlie, that<\/em>\u00a0things\u00a0<\/em>weren’t going to go as planned this year.<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em><\/p>\n

After a few weeks of rest after the Vend\u00e9e Globe, a surgical operation forced the Norman skipper to miss the prize-giving ceremony on May 10 in Les Sables d’ Olonne, and then, gradually, to give up on his racing season.\u00a0“When it\u00a0<\/em>comes\u00a0to health, it is<\/em>\u00a0always complicated to have<\/em>\u00a0a clear and definitive vision, so\u00a0<\/em>We tried to take things in\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>order,<\/em>”\u00a0<\/em>comments\u00a0Jean-Luc N\u00e9lias, team manager of Macif Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance.<\/p>\n

“We couldn’t
\nsacrifice the collective”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

The team and the sponsor then had to answer a first question : should the Imoca program continue without Charlie Dalin on board?\u00a0“<\/em>It’s not\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>so\u00a0easy to continue with another skipper<\/em><\/strong>, especially since Charlie and Macif have<\/em>\u00a0a long and solid history,\u00a0<\/em>recalls Jean-Marc Simon.\u00a0But we have always claimed that our excellent results were the result of an<\/em>\u00a0excellent skipper, but also of excellent<\/em>\u00a0collective work. In this logic,\u00a0<\/em>We couldn’t sacrifice the team and take a blank year.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Macif’s responsibility is<\/em>\u00a0also to keep this collective alive.”<\/p>\n

“The day after the Vend\u00e9e Globe awards ceremony, we therefore found ourselves having to come up with a plan B, and\u00a0find, in addition to a<\/strong>\u00a0co-skipper for the Transat Caf\u00e9 L’Or, a new skipper,<\/strong>”\u00a0<\/em>explains Jean-Luc N\u00e9lias. Not so simple in a post-Vend\u00e9e Globe season marked in particular by The Ocean Race Europe and\u00a0“a big transfer window for good sailors, which means a lot of logistics in terms of schedules.”<\/em><\/p>\n

For the co-skipper, the matter was quickly settled.\u00a0Charlie Dalin had already chosen Lo\u00efs Berrehar,\u00a0<\/strong>his replacement skipper in the last Vend\u00e9e Globe, to race alongside him. And even if his signing with Banque Populaire for the 2028 Vend\u00e9e Globe delayed the discussions a little, the uncertainties about his availability, while the former Figaro sailor is also engaged with Team Malizia in The Ocean Race Europe, quickly became removed.\u00a0“<\/em>For the skipper, it was<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0also Charlie’s choice<\/em><\/strong>. After an hour of discussions,\u00a0<\/em>Sam was the first on the list<\/em><\/strong>, he was<\/em>\u00a0the first\u00a0<\/em>one\u00a0<\/em>we\u00a0contacted,”<\/em>\u00a0continues Jean-Luc N\u00e9lias.<\/p>\n

The strengths of the Briton, who finished his first Vend\u00e9e Globe this winter in ninth position ?\u00a0“He has a lot of experience,\u00a0he knows how to win<\/strong>, he was Imoca 2023 champion as soon as he arrived on the circuit. Above all, he has also been with a lot of teams, so he is used to working with different people. He can make decisions and take responsibility for them;\u00a0<\/em>he’s a skipper, that<\/em><\/strong>‘s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>what we were looking for<\/em><\/strong>,”\u00a0<\/em>sums up the team manager. He adds:\u00a0“The suit is not easy to put on, he arrives in a champion team, with a sailor who has won everything, but he accepted the mission and\u00a0He’s doing us a great service\u00a0<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“First sad for him before
\nbeing happy for me”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

For the former skipper of\u00a0Vulnerable<\/em>, contacted by\u00a0Tip & Shaft<\/em>, the Macif team’s call in mid-May\u00a0“was of course a big surprise , it came at a time of uncertainty with the end of my project with Thomas Ruyant.”<\/em>\u00a0While he had committed to working alongside Paul Meilhat on\u00a0Biotherm<\/em>\u00a0for The Ocean Race Europe and was working to set up a new Imoca project to be at the start of the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028,\u00a0did the British skipper hesitate ?<\/strong>\u00a0“Frankly no,\u00a0It is clearly an offer that cannot be refused.<\/strong>\u00a0My first thought was mainly to check on Charlie, because I’m sad for him before being happy for myself. But from a sporting perspective, of course it ‘s a very precious opportunity , and I want to live up to this honor.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Since the end of May, training has begun aboard the Verdier design, which was launched in June 2023.\u00a0“So far<\/em>,\u00a0Sam and Lo\u00efs\u00a0have more work to do to<\/em>\u00a0adapt\u00a0to us than the\u00a0<\/em>other way\u00a0around, except that we had to buy a pair of binoculars, because Charlie doesn’t use them, but Sam does!”\u00a0<\/em>smiles Jean-Luc N\u00e9lias.\u00a0“<\/em>The team welcomed me<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with open arms<\/em><\/strong>,” comments Sam Goodchild.\u00a0“It’s a chance to sail on this boat, which I’ve obviously been watching very closely for\u00a0<\/em>a\u00a0long time. Now,\u00a0It’s<\/strong>\u00a0up to me to deliver<\/strong>, and this time, I will not have\u00a0no longer the excuse of not having a latest generation boat if I don’t perform.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The challenge is all the more important as the Briton has not given up on his ambition to set up an Imoca project for the 2028 Vend\u00e9e Globe with Leyton, who has been with him since 2019.\u00a0“I’m still working on the project,\u00a0<\/em>everyone is adapting<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and showing understanding,<\/em><\/strong>”\u00a0<\/em>he confirms.\u00a0My luck is to be surrounded by great people and to be integrated into great teams, with\u00a0a long-standing partner at my side who understands my sporting career\u00a0<\/strong>. Even so, I admit I no\u00a0<\/strong>longer have time to take on other roles! I have six busy months ahead of me, we’ll rest this winter!”<\/em><\/p>\n

“2025 is a parenthesis”<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

On Macif’s side, the line of conduct is also very clear:\u00a0“This is not a transfer and we are not working on a substitution.\u00a0Charlie remains at the center of the project and our skipper<\/strong>, we are only waiting for one thing: for him to come back,”<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>confirms Jean-Marc Simon.\u00a0“2025 is a parenthesis, not a starting point,”\u00a0<\/em>adds Jean-Luc N\u00e9lias, who is trying to\u00a0“maintaining the team in a positive dynamic despite the disappointment of not working with Charlie this year .”<\/em><\/p>\n

What about the future?<\/strong>\u00a0and in particular the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028, while the partnership with Macif officially runs until the end of 2026?\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a complex subject, we\u2019re in a sport that requires a lot of preparation time, but at the same time, we\u2019re living in a period where it \u2019s complicated to plan ahead,”<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>replies Jean-Marc Simon.\u00a0Even if we want to, we have to give ourselves a few months.\u00a0We try to be in the right position<\/strong>, especially towards Charlie, but also towards the team, the internal staff and the public.”<\/em><\/p>\n
