On 30 September, Bureau Vall\u00e9e announced the end of its sporting partnership in April 2026<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Louis Burton<\/strong>, initiated in 2010. Since the last Vend\u00e9e Globe 2024-2025, other sponsors have done the same. Is this a direct consequence of the current economic climate or a return to normal after euphoric years? Sailorz investigated.<\/em><\/p>\n

Several headline skippers from the last Vend\u00e9e Globe lost their sponsors for the 2025 season (or at its end): Maxime\u00a0Sorel<\/strong>\u00a0(V and B, Monbana and the Mayenne department), Yannick\u00a0Bestaven<\/strong>\u00a0(Ma\u00eetre CoQ), Thomas\u00a0Ruyant<\/strong>\u00a0(Advens), Damien\u00a0Seguin<\/strong>\u00a0(Groupe Apicil), Giancarlo\u00a0Pedote<\/strong>\u00a0(Prysmian) and, most recently, Paul\u00a0Meilhat<\/strong>\u00a0(Biotherm) and Louis\u00a0Burton<\/strong>\u00a0(Bureau Vall\u00e9e). In a press release on 30 September, Adrien Peyroles, CEO of Bureau Vall\u00e9e, whom we could not reach (nor the skipper), explained:\u00a0“In a complex economic context, Bureau Vall\u00e9e has chosen to reallocate budgets dedicated to sailing sponsorship to other strategic company priorities (…) Ending this partnership today is a\u00a0strategic realignment necessary for the company\u2019s proper development<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Asked about these sponsor departures, mostly non-renewals,\u00a0David Sineau<\/strong>, team manager of Initiatives-C\u0153ur until the end of the year and later seeking to host a Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028 project with his Plan\u00e8te Racing structure (see our article<\/em><\/a>), did not want to sound alarmist.\u00a0“Things need\u00a0to be put into perspective<\/strong>: the anomaly is not today\u2019s situation but rather what we experienced four years ago. At that time, sponsor re-engagement rates were nearly 100%, unprecedented<\/em>.\u00a0Historically, partnerships rarely last more than ten or fifteen years. So the fact that several long-term sponsors are leaving now at the same time is\u00a0not abnormal, even if it may appear as a rupture<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Paul Meilhat<\/strong>, recent winner of The Ocean Race Europe and seeking partners, shares this view:\u00a0“We are a bit forgetful,\u00a0we remember yesterday but never the day before<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0We tend to think that the reality of the last four years was the same as the previous thirty. But that\u2019s not the case. We are moving from an euphoric period to a more \u201cnormal\u201d situation. At the end of each cycle, some partnerships end and others begin.”<\/em>\u00a0He adds:\u00a0“Currently,\u00a0many boats are being built and new sailors are arriving<\/strong>\u00a0in the class, like Ambrogio Beccaria, Corentin Horeau, \u00c9lodie Bonafous, Lo\u00efs Berrehar, or Francesca Clapcich.”<\/em>\n<\/div>\n

Caution and patience<\/span><\/h2>\n
It remains that\u00a0some sailors seeking sponsors are struggling, like<\/strong>\u00a0Maxime Sorel<\/strong>.\u00a0“I sent 250 proposals, maybe even more, each customized with a mock-up in the company\u2019s colors and a specific contact, often the marketing manager. And yet, it doesn\u2019t work<\/em>.“<\/em>\u00a0The 10th finisher of the 2020 Vend\u00e9e Globe (retired in the last edition) explains:\u00a0“In my opinion,\u00a0this is clearly due to the economic context and lack of visibility<\/strong>. It\u2019s not specific to sailing; it\u2019s a wider trend, similar in cycling or motorsport.\u00a0Companies lack confidence in the future<\/strong>, they remain cautious, preferring to save and avoid risk. When we talk to prospects, they find our projects exciting and would like to join, but they hope for a clearer horizon and often tell us: “We\u2019ll get back to you later.” This means\u00a0some may miss the 2026 Route du Rhum but will reconsider for 2027<\/strong>.<\/em>” A view shared by David Sineau:\u00a0“Before, we could bring partners along at our pace, saying: ‘If we want to be ready, we must decide now.’\u00a0Today, it\u2019s more complicated: companies take their time, lengthening the process<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

With over thirty years in sailing market and former team manager for Yannick Bestaven,\u00a0Anne Combier<\/strong>\u00a0adds:\u00a0“The international context doesn\u2019t help; it\u2019s real stress for companies<\/strong>. Everyone I contacted for Yannick gave me as a reason, rightly or wrongly, the economic climate which makes them cautious and hesitant to reinvest. Initially, I was very optimistic because Yannick has a great boat and a turnkey project. We also had many open doors, yet I hit a wall.”<\/em>\u00a0More or less optimistic about short-term and medium-term sailing sponsorship, those interviewed agree that\u00a0offshore racing remains attractive<\/strong>, though there is often a difficult step between generating interest and securing commitment.\n<\/div>\n

Budgets in focus<\/span><\/h2>\n
In this context, our sources do not expect all 40 IMOCA spots for the 2026 Route du Rhum to be filled, predicting about 25 entrants instead.\u00a0“In 2014,\u00a0when I launched my project with SMA, there were only 9 IMOCA at the start<\/strong>\u00a0and 5 at the finish”<\/em>, says Paul Meilhat, adding:\u00a0“It won\u2019t be bad news if fewer than 40 boats compete in 2026; on the contrary. The economic model is more viable for sponsors with 25 competitors, as media exposure is divided into fewer shares.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The Ocean Race Europe winner also mentions\u00a0“a backlash”<\/em>\u00a0due to overly expensive projects<\/strong>, especially when building a foiling IMOCA, stressing the need to\u00a0“limit budgets and return to something more reasonable”<\/em>. Maxime Sorel shares the view:\u00a0“Insurance alone for an IMOCA costs between 300,000 and 400,000 euros<\/strong>. Today, I don\u2019t have these funds, so the boat stays ashore. I kept my technical team active by finding them work to maintain the structure as long as possible. But clearly, we are approaching a critical zone.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Yannick Bestaven has faced a similar situation, recently having to put his IMOCA up for sale after failing to secure a new partner to replace Ma\u00eetre CoQ.\u00a0“To run a competitive Vend\u00e9e Globe project with a reasonable team, you need\u00a0at least 2.5 million euros per year excluding taxes<\/strong><\/em>,” explains Anne Combier.\u00a0For comparison, a cycling team costs 15\u201317 million euros per year. That sport also has many more events than sailing.”<\/em><\/p>\n

This gloomy context, combined with political uncertainty in France,\u00a0pushes some sailors to look abroad<\/strong>.\u00a0“We find the most opportunities” in the U.S.”<\/em>, notes Maxime Sorel.\u00a0“You have to open the field of possibilities<\/em>,” adds Paul Meilhat.\u00a0In IMOCA,\u00a0our strength is having an international program\u00a0<\/strong>thanks to The Ocean Race, and we must take advantage. During The Ocean Race Europe, we made contacts everywhere.”<\/em>\u00a0Most IMOCA projects, including international skippers, are therefore based in France, points out Anne Combier, who adds:\u00a0“If prospecting internationally, it must be\u00a0with companies that have interests in France<\/strong>, like DMG Mori, for example.”<\/em><\/div>\n
