Sodebo,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>which has been involved in Ultim for years with Thomas Coville, announced on Wednesday its intention to\u00a0<\/em>launch in 2026 on the Ocean Fifty Series circuit<\/em><\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/em>L\u00e9onard Legrand\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>as skipper.\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0explains how this decision was made.<\/em><\/p>\n

A committed partner in sailing for 27 years, Sodebo is set to undergo a minor revolution in 2026, as the Vend\u00e9e-based brand, after Imoca (1998-2001), Orma (2002-2007), the Vend\u00e9e Globe (major partner since 2004) and large trimarans (since 2008), will\u00a0be launching into Ocean Fifty.\u00a0<\/strong>Confirmed last summer, this strategic shift is the result of\u00a0a process initiated in particular by the\u00a0<\/strong>boat’s\u00a0future skipper<\/strong>,\u00a0L\u00e9onard Legrand (<\/strong>31).<\/p>\n

Legrand joined Team Sodebo in 2015 as part of a work-study programme in electronics. He explains: “On my return from the delivery trip between R\u00e9union and Lorient, which I took part in after Jules Verne’s attempt at the end of 2020, I told myself that I absolutely wanted to be on the next one. To be legitimate as a sailor alongside Thomas (<\/em>Coville),\u00a0I managed to complete two Grand Prix seasons in Ocean Fifty,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>with Pierre Quiroga and then Baptiste Hulin. I then realised that it was a great tool, both for sport and for PR.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The man who was then in charge of the electronics and IT department at Team Sodebo convinced Thomas Coville to take him on board\u00a0Sodebo Ultim 3\u00a0<\/em>last winter for the new Jules Verne attempt (which was abandoned), and on his return he decided to take the plunge: “I went to see Thomas and Greg (<\/em>Evrard, team manager)\u00a0to talk to them about my desire to enter the<\/em>\u00a0Ocean Fifty class. The timing was pretty good because it came at a time when\u00a0<\/em>both Greg and Stephan (<\/em><\/strong>Ralaimongo, communications director)\u00a0<\/strong>were keen to propose new ideas.<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em><\/p>\n

All options considered<\/span><\/h2>\n

Stephan Ralaimongo<\/a>, who joined Sodebo in June 2024 \u2013 one month before Greg Evrard \u2013 after a long career at Decathlon, confirms:\u00a0“I had been working for several months on a new global communications strategy. The sailing project has been led by Thomas and Patricia Brochard for 27 years. Greg and I thought that\u00a0<\/em>perhaps it was time for us to take over and imagine the future,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>knowing that Thomas, at 57, was also thinking about the future. In April, at Thomas’s suggestion, we met at my home in Pointe du Raz, along with Greg and Adrien Servetto\u00a0<\/em>(sports and events marketing manager at Sodebo),\u00a0to think about what we could come up with together.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The quartet cast a wide net:\u00a0“<\/em>We considered everything, including stopping the sailing project<\/em><\/strong>,” confirms the latter.\u00a0We thought about monohull projects, from the Figaro \u2013 I’ve always found the Skipper Macif pathway exceptional, for example \u2013 to the Vend\u00e9e Globe, which we ultimately rejected, mainly because the mix of being a partner in the race and a partner in a boat didn’t suit us very well.”\u00a0<\/em>The Ocean Fifty option, also pushed by L\u00e9onard Legrand, was ultimately chosen.\u00a0<\/strong>Firstly for strategic reasons:\u00a0“As<\/em>\u00a0we want to get closer to the French public<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>The Ocean Fifty allows you<\/em>\u00a0to go to places where the Ultims don’t go, these latters do transatlantic races and round-the-world trips, but\u00a0you don’t actually see them very often<\/em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Ocean Fifty is also a platform and a circuit that allows a lot of people to sail,<\/strong>”\u00a0<\/em>explains the communications director.<\/p>\n

Another argument was\u00a0Thomas Coville’s desire to give L\u00e9onard Legrand a leg up<\/strong>:\u00a0“At Sodebo, we’ve always had this desire to give younger people a chance. We’ve done it in the past with Quentin Delapierre, Corentin Horeau, Quentin Ponroy and Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Denis,”\u00a0<\/em>confirms the skipper.\u00a0It’s difficult for me to separate this story from the one I experienced with Laurent Bourgnon, as the ingredients are the same: I too came to the start to work as a technician on his boat.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A way of preparing for the future<\/span><\/h2>\n

Once the decision was made,\u00a0the four men met again in May<\/strong>, this time at Thomas Coville’s home in Locmariaquer, joined by L\u00e9onard Legrand and Benjamin Schwartz (who joined Team Sodebo at the end of 2024), to go over the details of the project and prepare its presentation to the three co-presidents of Sodebo.\u00a0The big meeting was set for 1 July at the company’s headquarters\u00a0<\/strong>in Montaigu (Vend\u00e9e). “Everyone had rehearsed their presentation well,”\u00a0<\/em>smiles Stephan Ralaimongo. What was the reaction of\u00a0the three daughters of Mr and Mrs Bougro<\/a>, founders of Sodebo? “They were happy to see that we were offering them something new, and they also liked the idea of enabling a young talent to achieve his dream,”\u00a0<\/em>replied the communications director, adding: “We started the presentation at 10am, and by 11.45am we had the go-ahead in principle.<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em><\/p>\n

“For Sodebo, it’s important to have quality contacts and proximity to as many people as possible, and being\u00a0present at more races and everywhere\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>with this Ocean Fifty is a step in that direction<\/em>,”\u00a0<\/em>confirms Patricia Brochard, who nevertheless set one condition for this commitment:\u00a0“<\/em>That it fits within the same budget<\/em><\/strong>”\u00a0<\/em>(excluding depreciation of the boat). A sailing budget which, as she told Sailorz in January 2024, amounts to around \u20ac4 million per year \u2013 a sum that includes the partnership with the Vend\u00e9e Globe, worth \u20ac4.3 million over four years.<\/p>\n

Under these conditions, there was no question of building a new boat \u2013 which the class’s numerus clausus did not allow anyway \u2013\u00a0as Team Sodebo acquired\u00a0<\/strong>Wind of Trust<\/em><\/strong>, Christopher Pratt’s Ocean Fifty, currently based in Marseille,\u00a0in a deal that will be made official in mid-October<\/strong>. This 2009 VPLP-designed, winner of the Route du Rhum in 2014 with Erwan Le Roux, will then set sail for Lorient, where it will undergo four months of upgrades \u2013\u00a0a new mast will be built\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 before returning to the Mediterranean in spring 2026 for three Ocean Fifty Series events. “The delivery and these Grands Prix will be\u00a0<\/em>a good way to get to grips with the boat\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>before I set off solo on the Drheam Cup, which is a qualifier for the Route du Rhum,”\u00a0<\/em>explains L\u00e9onard Legrand.<\/p>\n

Sodebo will therefore have a double presence in the Route du Rhum\u00a0<\/strong>with the Ocean Fifty and Thomas Coville’s Ultim, who, with the rise of Benjamin Schwartz, his co-skipper on the Transat Caf\u00e9 L’Or, and L\u00e9onard Legrand,\u00a0is “preparing for<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>the future<\/strong>“<\/em>, as he confides.\u00a0“He has floated the idea that the Rhum may be his last solo race and that Benjamin could take over for the Arkea Ultim Challenge, but he will decide when the time is right,”\u00a0<\/em>smiles Stephan Ralaimongo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
