On October 26, 74 duos will start the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or<\/strong>. As before every major race,\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0has gathered a panel of experts to discuss\u00a0the contenders<\/strong>. This week, the focus is on the\u00a0Ocean Fifty<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Class40<\/strong>\u00a0with four former winners, the defending champions Quentin\u00a0Vlamynck<\/strong>\u00a0(Ocean Fifty) and Nicolas\u00a0Andrieu<\/strong>\u00a0(Class40), Matthieu\u00a0Souben<\/strong>\u00a0(Ocean Fifty 2021) and\u00a0Antoine\u00a0Carpentier<\/strong>\u00a0(Ocean Fifty 2019, Class40 2017 and 2021), as well as Alexis\u00a0Loison<\/strong>, winner of the Solitaire du Figaro 2025, and L\u00e9onard\u00a0Legrand<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>a newcomer to Ocean Fifty in 2026<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

In Ocean Fifty, the match promises to be wide open with a record participation of\u00a0ten boats<\/a>, unprecedented in the class for a transatlantic race.\u00a0“We were eight on the Route du Rhum 2022, it’s good to see old teams still here and new ones arriving.\u00a0The class is doing well<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0says a delighted Quentin Vlamynck, who won in 2023 with Thibaut Vauchel-Camus.<\/p>\n

Our speakers all emphasize that\u00a0a new element will change the game: the ban on outside routing<\/strong>.\u00a0“This will completely reshuffle the cards<\/em>,” confirms Matthieu Souben.\u00a0“Each team had its own way of operating: some were already very autonomous, others depended heavily on their routing cell.\u00a0You will have to spend more time at the\u00a0table<\/strong>. This will involve a different management of sleep, boat performance, nutrition… It will be a bit of an unknown for everyone.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Based on the average predictions of our experts, the duo from\u00a0Inter Invest\u00a0<\/em>(Matthieu Perraut\/Jean-Baptiste Gell\u00e9e<\/strong>) wins by a short head.\u00a0“They have a recent and reliable boat that they know well, and they have shown their solidity for two years, whatever the conditions,”<\/em>\u00a0argues Matthieu Souben. He is echoed by L\u00e9onard Legrand:\u00a0“The boat, versatile and complete, won everything in 2024<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0[Route des Terre Neuvas, Med Max, general ranking of the Ocean Fifty Series, Editor’s note], it’s a machine truly suited for this kind of exercise. Whether it starts in light airs or strong winds, it will do well. Starting with a machine like that helps to be calm. If they make the right weather choices, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be in front.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Erwan Le Roux<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Audrey Ogereau<\/strong>\u00a0(Koesio<\/em>) are also placed as very serious candidates for victory.\u00a0“This duo found a good rhythm<\/em>,” notes Quentin Vlamynck.\u00a0“Erwan perfectly masters the platform and he is training Audrey, much like Lalou Roucayrol did with me a few years ago.\u00a0Audrey is very motivated, she brings something else to the performance<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Edenred\u00a0<\/em>too “fresh”?<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

Other podium contenders,\u00a0Thibaut Vauchel-Camus<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Damien Seguin<\/strong>\u00a0aboard\u00a0Solidaires en Peloton<\/em>, the trimaran that won in 2023 with Quentin Vlamynck on board, who confides:\u00a0“Following its dismasting a year ago, the boat has been well optimized, Thibaut has completely overhauled it to redo everything to his liking.”<\/em>\u00a0Matthieu Souben adds:\u00a0“With Damien, they form a very complementary duo<\/strong>\u00a0and have known each other for a very long time. They are two fierce racers who won’t give up until the end.”\u00a0<\/em>At the same level, our experts place the duo\u00a0Baptiste Hulin\/Thomas Rouxel<\/strong>\u00a0(Viabilis Oc\u00e9ans<\/em>), about whom L\u00e9onard Legrand, who sailed two seasons aboard the VPLP design launched in 2017, says:\u00a0“The crew is sharp and while the boat is not the latest generation,\u00a0it allows them to push hard without getting too scared<\/strong>, which is essential on a double-handed transatlantic race. If there is swell and strong wind at the start, they will be able to position themselves well right out of the English Channel.”<\/em><\/p>\n

What about\u00a0Edenred<\/em><\/strong>, the class’s newest boat (Romaric Neyhousser design), which made a strong impact at the end of September by winning its very first race, the 24h Ultim?\u00a0“Basile\u00a0<\/em>(Bourgnon)\u00a0and Emmanuel\u00a0<\/em>(Le Roch)\u00a0only had a few months to prepare, but they have already worked on quite a few details because they were able to sail very quickly after the launch,”<\/em>\u00a0observes Quentin Vlamynck. For Matthieu Souben, the pair will perform well, but the boat’s newness may be a hindrance:\u00a0“In terms of reliability and knowledge of the boat, they are still a bit behind, which is logical<\/strong>. That doesn’t mean they won’t have a superb race but on paper, I put a slight caveat.”<\/em><\/p>\n

L\u00e9onard Legrand has fewer reservations:\u00a0“The Neyhousser designs work well<\/strong>, they are fast in all conditions. If the boat doesn’t have too many technical problems, I’m sure it will be in the lead.”\u00a0<\/em>The same applies to\u00a0Lazare<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Erwan Le Draoulec \/Tanguy Le Turquais): a high-performing Ocean Fifty (ex\u00a0R\u00e9alit\u00e9s<\/em>, VPLP design 2023), a duo accustomed to offshore racing, but still quite novice in multihulls.\u00a0“I’m not sure they will be able to go full throttle all the time, but they will be a force to be reckoned with<\/em>,” warns L\u00e9onard Legrand.<\/p>\n

Class40: Will Douguet and Tr\u00e9hin remain undefeated?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Our Class40 experts are unanimous: it’s difficult to make predictions in this category which gathers the bulk of the fleet,\u00a0with 42 entries<\/a>.\u00a0“This follows a trend we’ve been seeing for a few years: in this class,\u00a015 to 20 boats race very professionally<\/strong>, the level keeps rising, with a super homogeneous field,”<\/em>\u00a0notes Nicolas Andrieu.\u00a0“Every time, we see some serious battles. I still remember two years ago: it was exciting and undecided from start to finish for the victory,”<\/em>\u00a0emphasizes Alexis Loison, who was racing with Nicolas Jossier. For Antoine Carpentier,\u00a0“you will also need to have some luck with\u00a0<\/em>the weather conditions encountered depending on the chosen boat because\u00a0e<\/strong><\/em>ach hull has its strengths and weaknesses<\/strong>\u00a0depending on the point of sail, the state of the sea, or the wind strength.”<\/em>So, it’s hard to commit, but our speakers agree that one duo seems to have a slight advantage to win:\u00a0Corentin Douguet<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Axel Tr\u00e9hin<\/strong>\u00a0(SNSM, faites un don!<\/em>\u00a0[SNSM, make a donation!]). In fact, since the launch of their Lift V3,\u00a0they have won everything<\/strong>, both in crewed races (Spi Ouest-France) and double-handed (CIC Normandy Channel Race and Fastnet).\u00a0“The formats were shorter than the transatlantic race, so it’s difficult to draw conclusions. But still, to win three out of three races straight away,\u00a0you need serious skill<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0analyzes Nicolas Andrieu.<\/p>\n

“They have an excellent boat<\/strong>, the latest version from Lombard, a firm that invests heavily in Class40. I sailed a bit aboard and I found the ergonomics to be extremely well done.\u00a0Axel is now a prominent figure in Class40<\/strong>, as is Corentin who also has a Figarist background, and we know that those people are dangerous!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0smiles Alexis Loison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It’s a tight race for the podium<\/span><\/h2>\n

On the second step of the podium, our experts place the Spanish duo\u00a0Pep Costa<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Pablo Santurde<\/strong>\u00a0aboard\u00a0VSF Sports<\/em>, the former\u00a0Allagrande\u00a0Pirelli<\/em>, winner in 2023 (Musa 40 designed by Gianluca Guelfi).\u00a0“They have made many optimizations which, having discussed it with the architect, are going in the right direction for this type of course<\/em>,” emphasizes Nicolas Andrieu who was aboard in 2023.\u00a0“Pep will be a major contender, especially associated with Pablo who has a magnificent track record in this race in Class40\u00a0<\/em>[winner in 2021, 2nd in 2013, 3rd in 2017 and 2023, Editor’s note].”<\/em>To complete the podium, the votes were close and our specialists bet on\u00a0Guillaume Pirouelle<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0C\u00e9dric Chateau<\/strong>\u00a0(Mach 40.5\u00a0Seafrigo-Sogestran<\/em>) whom Alexis Loison, who knows them very well, sees making a strong move.\u00a0“They have had convincing results this year and they have known each other forever, since C\u00e9dric was Guillaume’s coach. I replaced C\u00e9dric on the first leg of Les Sables-Horta\u00a0and\u00a0I was able to see how well prepared the boat was<\/strong>. Guillaume has invested a lot technically, I feel them to be very motivated and sharp.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Two other favorite duos are mentioned by our specialists:\u00a0Fabien Delahaye\/Pierre Leboucher<\/strong>\u00a0on the Lift V2\u00a0Legallais<\/em>, winner of Les Sables-Horta this year,\u00a0and\u00a0Achille<\/strong>\u00a0Nebout\/Gildas Mah\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0(Amarris<\/em>). Despite a dismasting that disrupted their season, the latter will not be handicapped, according to Antoine Carpentier:\u00a0“I’m not too worried about them because they are psychologically solid and they continued to sail together on other platforms.”<\/em>\u00a0Among the outsiders, several pairs stood out, such as\u00a0Michel Desjoyeaux\/Alexandre Le Gallais<\/strong>, who are debuting the Agit\u00e9 40\u00a0Trimcontrol<\/em>, or the Italians\u00a0Luca Rosetti\/Matteo Sericano<\/strong>\u00a0(Maccaferri Futura<\/em>), winners of the first stage of Les Sables-Horta.<\/p>\n
