SAEM Vend\u00e9e unveiled the notice of race<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a011th edition of the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>\u00a0on Wednesday, which will start on November 12, 2028. No revolution compared to the previous one, but\u00a0an evolution of the qualification and selection system<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0tells you more.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was at the Vend\u00e9e Parnasse, which houses the Parisian offices of the Vend\u00e9e department, opposite the Montparnasse tower and station, that\u00a0Alain Leboeuf<\/strong>, President of SAEM Vend\u00e9e, and\u00a0Nicolas Ch\u00e9n\u00e9chaud<\/strong>, Mayor of Les Sables d’Olonne since September 29, accompanied by the president of the Imoca class,\u00a0Antoine Mermod<\/strong>, invited the press on Wednesday, November 19, to present the notice of race (the document\u00a0is here<\/a>) for the 11th edition of the Vend\u00e9e Globe.<\/p>\n

The event, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary on the occasion, will start\u00a0on November 12, 2028 at 1:02 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0and will be based on a new qualification and selection system, put in place by SAEM and Imoca, which, incidentally, have renewed the agreement linking them until the end of the 2032 edition \u2013 subject to a financial contribution from the former to the latter of 100,000 euros per year.\u00a0“The objective was to\u00a0evolve the system based on what we had observed in the previous cycle<\/strong>\u00a0so that it would be more equitable and agile,”<\/em>\u00a0announced Alain Leboeuf in the preamble.<\/p>\n

Before going into detail, first with\u00a0a changing qualification rule<\/strong>, since, to tick this box, a sailor will have to finish\u00a0one of the five Grade 2 solo races<\/strong>\u00a0listed in the\u00a02025-2028 calendar<\/a>\u00a0on their Vend\u00e9e Globe boat \u2013 in chronological order: Vend\u00e9e Arctique, Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe, Retour \u00e0 La Base, Transat CIC, and New York-Vend\u00e9e \u2013 in a time less than twice that of the winner. Previously, one had to take the start of two solo races (one of which had to be before the end of 2023) and finish one in a time less than one and a half times that of the winner.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0the selection<\/strong>, which will only apply if there are more than 40 entries, where the number of miles covered previously served to decide between candidates, this time it is\u00a0a points system that is being introduced<\/strong>. In the 18 events of the Imoca Globe Series 2025-2028 (including the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2024), classified from Grade 1 to 4, points are awarded on a decreasing basis\u00a0according to the results<\/strong>, which also take into account their format (solo, double-handed, crewed) \u2013 crew members and co-skippers, for example, score 50% of the main skipper’s points.<\/p>\n

In order to\u00a0take into account individual situations<\/strong>\u00a0that posed a problem during the previous cycle \u2013 maternity, illness or injury, foreigners who have more difficulty getting to the start of races \u2013 this system only takes into account\u00a0the 9 best results recorded over the 13 Grade 1 to 3 races<\/strong>, while, according to Alain Leboeuf,\u00a0“half the points of the last finisher will be awarded to those who abandon but complete at least 50% of the race.”<\/em>\u00a0Finally, SAEM Vend\u00e9e reserves the right to award\u00a0three wild cards<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 compared to one in 2024.<\/p>\n

Less pressure on the skippers<\/span><\/h2>\n

Can we therefore speak of a\u00a0less demanding system?<\/strong>\u00a0“I would rather say different,”<\/em>\u00a0replies Antoine Mermod.\u00a0“The 2024 system was based on quantity, so you had to start your project very quickly. The limitation was that it put a lot of pressure on the skippers and there were side effects that jeopardized some projects; it was probably a bit excessive. Here,\u00a0it is more based on quality<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Reached by\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>\u00a0on Thursday,\u00a0Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer<\/strong>, who was directly concerned by the issue of maternity in the previous cycle, believes that these new rules\u00a0“smooth out the problem of having to be fully committed for four years, so the trend is positive, and if you take my case last time,\u00a0I would have been much calmer with this regulation<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0However, she questions why the issue of maternity was not treated as a separate case,\u00a0“when having a child does not have the same consequences for a woman as for a man.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Present at the Parisian press conference on Wednesday,\u00a0S\u00e9bastien Marsset<\/strong>\u00a0expressed his satisfaction:\u00a0“The race for miles clearly put my entire project under pressure and a year after the start, I am still paying for it. This new system will\u00a0take some pressure off the skippers’ shoulders<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0Reached on Thursday while he was delivering his Imoca back from Martinique,\u00a0Louis Duc<\/strong>\u00a0adds:\u00a0“Four years ago, the stress was permanent because we knew there were many projects and that we absolutely had to do all the races. This is less the case today;\u00a0I have counted about twenty truly anchored projects for 2028<\/strong>; there will inevitably be ten more, but I am not sure it will go much beyond that.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Is this new system also motivated by a more complicated economic context?\u00a0“It is not a response to the economic context, but the fact is that\u00a0it allows for a more gradual arrival at the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0indicates Antoine Mermod.\u00a0“Today, we clearly see that projecting three or four years ahead is more difficult for companies, but the Vend\u00e9e Globe remains an XXL event, and I would not be surprised if projects are set up in 2027 and we reach 40 entries.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A system that is too “easy”?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The fact remains that some sailors, and not the least of them, now find themselves left out, a point highlighted by J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou, interviewed with Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re\u00a0by\u00a0Ouest-France<\/em><\/a>\u00a0after his victorious arrival in the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or, suggesting that\u00a0“the selections for the Vend\u00e9e Globe are not tough enough<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0Questioned on the subject on Wednesday, Alain Leboeuf replied:\u00a0“The Vend\u00e9e Globe is a marvelous race because it welcomes great sportsmen, and J\u00e9r\u00e9mie is one of them, but also adventurers, who do not set out to be first but make the public dream.”<\/em>\u00a0Clarisse Cr\u00e9mer agrees:\u00a0“I understand J\u00e9r\u00e9mie and Morgan’s point of view as sportsmen because that is their DNA, but I think\u00a0they are mistaken about what people like to watch in 2025<\/strong>. And you cannot blame less-well-ranked sailors for having more following.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Reached by\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>\u00a0on Thursday while he too was delivering his Imoca back to Brittany, the skipper of\u00a0Charal<\/em>\u00a0wanted to clarify his thinking:\u00a0“The idea is not to criticize certain projects, but just to say that\u00a0the Vend\u00e9e Globe must remain a high-level race<\/strong>. Today, people like Tom Dolan, who wins the Figaro, Morgan Lagravi\u00e8re, three-time winner of the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or, Nico Troussel, or even Franck Cammas cannot find a budget for the Vend\u00e9e. Shouldn’t sponsors rather bet on profiles like that, who will put in a great performance, like Sam<\/em>\u00a0(Godchild)\u00a0or Justine<\/em>\u00a0(Mettraux),\u00a0in the top 10 of the last Vend\u00e9e with a second-hand boat?”<\/em><\/p>\n

And J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou added:\u00a0“What bothers me, and I’m not the only one, is that there is a very large gap between the first ten or fifteen and those behind. And when I see in the new notice of race that you can qualify by doing twice the time of the first finisher on a transatlantic race, I find that enormous. I think that\u00a0even those who have fewer resources and take part to the Vend\u00e9e for the first time, we can ask a little more of them<\/strong>, because with these rules, they can settle for the minimum and secure their thing, which is understandable.”<\/em><\/p>\n

For S\u00e9bastien Marsset, this does not prevent the “small” projects from also aiming for performance:\u00a0“In the last Vend\u00e9e, we also had an incredible competition. We found ourselves ten boats within 100 miles in the Indian Ocean, four finishing on the same day. OK, we didn’t get a podium or a top 10, but\u00a0we were still engaged in a sporting endeavor<\/strong>; that’s why we were welcomed within the Finist\u00e8re offshore racing training center. And today, you have to accept that to be a good sailor, you must certainly train on the water, but not only that. In some ways,\u00a0whether we like it or not, the competition is also played out on other fronts<\/strong>, including communication; we must manage to evolve our benchmarks, which are no longer the same as they were ten or twenty years ago.”<\/em><\/p>\n

What\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>\u00a0also learned from the press conference:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

  • The NY Vend\u00e9e maintained in 2028<\/strong>. Although its holding immediately after The Transat CIC was not guaranteed, the New York-Vend\u00e9e will indeed take place in spring 2028.\u00a0“We had imagined scheduling it a year earlier to have one race per year \u2013 Vend\u00e9e Globe start in 2024, arrivals in 2025, Vend\u00e9e Arctique 2026, New York-Vend\u00e9e 2027, then Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028 \u2013 but we saw\u00a0the difficulty of organizing a race like this in parallel with The Ocean Race<\/strong>. And we clearly felt how much our Vend\u00e9e Globe contenders needed this last training phase a few months before the start,”<\/em>\u00a0said Alain Leboeuf.<\/li>\n
  • Towards energy autonomy?<\/strong>\u00a0While the Imoca class rule has changed little compared to the previous cycle, it contains two main novelties: a new, stronger one-design mast and the objective of energy autonomy for the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2028, which, Alain Leboeuf explained, comes with a penalty system.\u00a0“Sailors will embark 60 liters of diesel which they can use at their discretion and an additional 60 liters sealed, the eventual use of which will be assessed by the jury, which will issue penalties if necessary,”<\/em>\u00a0Antoine Mermod specified.\u00a0“It is\u00a0a significant effort<\/strong>\u00a0because in the last Vend\u00e9e, competitors consumed an average of 240 liters, and it is a real technological challenge.”<\/em><\/li>\n
  • A Race HQ and a Vend\u00e9e Globe gallery<\/strong>. Nicolas Ch\u00e9n\u00e9chaud and Alain Leboeuf announced the future construction of a permanent Race HQ and a Vend\u00e9e Globe gallery, expected for 2028.\u00a0“For the Race HQ, the idea is to\u00a0make savings, rather than setting one up again each time<\/strong>, knowing that since the city organizes other major races, it can have multiple periods of use,”<\/em>\u00a0explained Alain Leboeuf, before clarifying:\u00a0“We are currently working with a local player who can make these premises profitable; the department will not build directly.”<\/em>\u00a0What it will do, however, is for the gallery, intended\u00a0“to keep the Vend\u00e9e Globe alive all year round,”<\/em>\u00a0for which the president of SAEM indicated: “I have set a condition for it to be built, which is that there must be\u00a0no operating costs weighing on the department<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/li>\n
  • An increased prize-money<\/strong>. Alain Leboeuf announced an increase in prize-money of 200,000 euros compared to the previous edition, including 50,000 for the winner, who will receive 250,000 euros.<\/li>\n
  • The Vend\u00e9e Globe TV series not before September<\/strong>. The six-episode series, filmed during the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2024, will not be broadcast on France T\u00e9l\u00e9vision (in prime time) before September 2026, with Red Bull also responsible for its international distribution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
