The\u00a0DMG Mori Sailing Team<\/strong>\u00a0announced this week\u00a0the arrival<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Sam Davies<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Nicolas Lunven<\/strong>\u00a0alongside\u00a0Kojiro Shiraishi<\/strong>, with The Ocean Race Atlantic next summer and The Ocean Race in January 2027 in their sights. This is an opportunity for\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0to learn more about the Japanese Imoca project.<\/em><\/p>\n

After three consecutive Vend\u00e9e Globes, the last two under DMG Mori colors (retirement in 2016-17, 16th in 2020-21, 24th in 2024-25), Kojiro Shiraishi and his partner barely waited for the finish of the 2024-2025 edition to look ahead and\u00a0launch a more ambitious 2025-2028 campaign<\/strong>.\u00a0“When I finished the Vend\u00e9e Globe a year ago, we said with DMG Mori that we wanted to launch\u00a0a new project, but a different one<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0the 58-year-old skipper, newly arrived in Lorient from Japan, told\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>\u00a0this Friday morning.\u00a0“The Whitbread, which became the Volvo and then The Ocean Race, has always interested me, so we agreed to\u00a0enter this race and build a new boat<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The Japanese skipper, who launched a VPLP design for the 2020 Vend\u00e9e Globe (still for sale), then set out to find an architect and, after consulting several, chose\u00a0Guillaume Verdier<\/strong>.\u00a0“Our first meeting was before the start of the 2024 Vend\u00e9e Globe; he came to our office without a notebook or presentation, we just had a friendly discussion.\u00a0I didn’t think he would accept our project<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0he says.\u00a0“Since he had designed boats that had won a lot, I asked him if it bothered him if I didn’t necessarily fit into that category. He replied that\u00a0what he liked about our project was having the freedom to express himself<\/strong>; it was a nice surprise for me.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Built, like the previous one, at Multiplast, this new\u00a0DMG Mori<\/em>, surrounded by the utmost secrecy, will arrive at the team’s hangar in Lorient on March 9, with\u00a0the launch scheduled for June<\/strong>.\u00a0“Since DMG Mori is a technology company, we set ourselves the challenge of innovating and\u00a0building a technological boat that might serve the evolution of the Imoca class<\/strong>. I can’t wait to see how she works,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Kojiro Shiraishi.<\/p>\n

Jacques Cara\u00ebs was convinced to join<\/span><\/h2>\n

To help him manage this new machine, whose hull design is highly anticipated, Shiraishi chose to surround himself with experience, first by entrusting the project’s reins to the seasoned\u00a0Jacques Cara\u00ebs<\/strong>,\u00a0appointed team manager<\/a>\u00a0to replace Charles Euverte, who left at the end of the previous campaign.\u00a0“Between the new boat, The Ocean Race, and the 2028 Vend\u00e9e Globe, we’ve set the bar very high. I knew that on my own, I couldn’t get the best out of this boat. So\u00a0I told myself we had to build a strong team<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0says the skipper.\u00a0“The team manager position is the most important. I had thought about it before the Vend\u00e9e Globe start and, as soon as I finished, I contacted Jacques, whom I’ve known since my first race in 2016 when he was race director.\u00a0I did everything to try and convince him<\/strong>; I don’t know how many times I followed up!”<\/em><\/p>\n

The Japanese skipper’s persistence eventually convinced “Jaco,” 66, to take on a role that was new to him.\u00a0“It’s true that Kojiro sought me out a lot, knowing I had decided to stop race directing,”<\/em>\u00a0Cara\u00ebs comments.\u00a0“At one point, I thought\u00a0it was hard to turn down this new challenge<\/strong>, with a new boat, an ambitious project focused on a crew, and an important human element.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Appointed last summer, the former Vend\u00e9e Globe race director immediately set to work\u00a0“restructuring the team,”<\/em>\u00a0specifying:\u00a0“Since there had been departures, they had left a big gap in management;\u00a0consequently, we redefined the organizational chart<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0This began with the technical team, recruiting experienced members alongside\u00a0L\u00e9o Gonin<\/strong>\u00a0(head of composites and shipyard monitoring at Multiplast):\u00a0Stan Delbarre<\/strong>\u00a0(boat captain) and\u00a0Yvan Joucla<\/strong>\u00a0(rigging), both of whom previously worked for Yannick Bestaven.<\/p>\n

Next was the sailing team, with the goal of\u00a0forming a crew<\/strong>\u00a0for The Ocean Race Atlantic in summer 2026 (starting September 2 from New York for a European port yet to be announced), and then for The Ocean Race itself. This led to this week’s announcement of\u00a0new arrivals<\/a>\u00a0within the DMG Mori Sailing Team:\u00a0Nicolas Lunven<\/strong>,\u00a0“in charge of sporting and technical optimization,”<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Sam Davies<\/strong>.\u00a0“I contacted Nico quite early because he now has a lot of experience on foiling Imocas and is a very calm person,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Jacques Cara\u00ebs.\u00a0“Given the language barrier, which remains an issue for our crew\u00a0<\/em>[Kojiro Shiraishi speaks very little English, Ed.],\u00a0I knew his temperament could match Kojiro’s<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Contacted by\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>, the 43-year-old sailor,\u00a0whom we interviewed<\/a>\u00a0two weeks ago about his Figaro project with PRB, explains:\u00a0“Contacts with Jacques go back to last summer. I then met Kojiro in the autumn to finalize things, and I’ve been collaborating with the team since Christmas. What won me over? The idea of continuing to sail in Imoca and racing The Ocean Race,\u00a0a boat that promises to be quite innovative, but also working with Jacques<\/strong>, whom I like and respect very much.”<\/em><\/p>\n

As for Sam Davies, her arrival on the team was finalized in late 2025.\u00a0“Last year, I really focused on the Initiatives C\u0153ur project and the handover to Violette\u00a0<\/em>(Dorange), even if I had the idea of continuing to race in a crewed competition in the back of my mind,”<\/em>\u00a0she says.\u00a0“It was eventually during the return delivery of the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or that I told myself I would really like to do The Ocean Race Atlantic this year.\u00a0I then sent my CV to several teams; Jaco called me immediately<\/strong>\u00a0and also mentioned The Ocean Race, and the day after I returned, I went to see him.”<\/em>\u00a0For Cara\u00ebs,\u00a0“Sam’s kindness and competence meant the choice was made quite naturally. Like Nico, she combines\u00a0experience, performance, but also a capacity for exchange and a talent for teaching<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“My fourth and
\nfinal Vend\u00e9e Globe”<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The British skipper (51)\u00a0is delighted to sail again with Nicolas Lunven<\/strong>, who raced with her in the Jacques Vabre in 2021\u2014“Our duo worked well,”<\/em>\u00a0she notes. In 2026, she will juggle supporting Violette Dorange, until June before the launch of\u00a0DMG Mori<\/em>, then from the return from The Ocean Race Atlantic into the Route du Rhum, and the Japanese project, driven by\u00a0“the dream of sailing on a new boat that pushes design and performance further<\/strong>; it’s an incredible opportunity.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The rest of the future crew?\u00a0“Internally, we will have\u00a0Alexandre Demange<\/strong>, who was on the podium of the last Mini Transat with the DMG Mori Sailing Academy\u00a0<\/em>(3rd in proto),”<\/em>\u00a0answers Jacques Cara\u00ebs.\u00a0“This year, we will test a young Japanese woman,\u00a0Arisa Moriya<\/strong>, who did a tour of Japan with Kojiro and has amazing motivation. If it goes well, she could do a few legs of The Ocean Race. And\u00a0we still have two young people to recruit<\/strong>, a boy and a girl who have already sailed in Imoca; we will finalize the choice very soon with Kojiro.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Asked about the team’s objectives for The Ocean Race\u2014which currently has only two teams officially confirmed, DMG Mori Sailing Team and Malizia\u2014the Japanese skipper replies:\u00a0“Dr. Mori\u00a0<\/em>(head of DMG Mori)\u00a0told us\u00a0it would be good to get podium finishes on every leg<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0And he concludes, when asked about the rest of the program, namely the 2028 Vend\u00e9e Globe:\u00a0“It will be my fourth and last; I will be 61, so it will be a big challenge<\/strong>, but the experience on The Ocean Race with Nico and Sam will allow me to learn a lot.”<\/em><\/p>\n
