Overall winner<\/a>\u00a0in January of the\u00a0Rorc Transatlantic Race<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>Palanad 4<\/strong>, a 50-foot scow designed by\u00a0Sam Manuard<\/strong>\u00a0and built at JPS Production, is helping to shift the goalposts in IRC racing. The owner,\u00a0Olivier Magr\u00e9<\/strong>, and the architect\u2014who was part of the crew for the transat\u2014decode the concept of\u00a0a boat looking to confirm her form in the RORC Caribbean 600<\/strong>\u00a0(starting Monday, February 23rd).<\/em><\/p>\n

It took\u00a0Palanad 4<\/em>\u00a0only 8 days, 5 hours, and 55 minutes to complete the 3,000 miles of the RORC Transatlantic Race between Lanzarote and Antigua, at\u00a0a fine average of 15 knots<\/strong>. The only faster competitor was the Maxi\u00a0Raven<\/em>, equipped with AC75-style articulated foils and measuring… 111 feet long!\u00a0Palanad 4<\/em>, however, soundly beat it on corrected time<\/strong>, as it did for the fourteen other IRC entrants, notably\u00a0Ino Noir<\/em>, a renowned Carkeek 45 and a typical expression of Anglo-Saxon IRC prototypes.<\/p>\n

At the finish,\u00a0aerial footage<\/a>\u00a0of the all-white scow surfing with ease at over 20 knots on the blue waters of Antigua went viral.\u00a0“The whole transat was like that!”<\/em>\u00a0exclaims happy owner Olivier Magr\u00e9.\u00a0“We truly had a blast, going fast without getting tired<\/strong>, unlike other boats where the crew is forced to hike out night and day to hold the spinnakers.\u00a0<\/em>Palanad‘s aesthetics might shock some purists, but to try it is to love it!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Having scoured the Class40 circuit<\/strong>\u00a0with his son Antoine\u2014first\u00a0on a pointed bow<\/a>\u00a0and then on\u00a0no. 160<\/a>, a 2020 Mach 40.4 signed by Sam Manuard (winner of this same Transatlantic Race in 2021)\u2014Magr\u00e9 eventually tired of the technicality of Class40s, their cockpits dedicated exclusively to solo or double-handed sailing, and their spartan interiors. This led to his wish for\u00a0“a boat for sailing with friends that allows me, at nearly 60, to sleep in real bunks, not on soaked sails.<\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0He once again turned to Samuel Manuard, who, after this first transat, is also pleased with\u00a0“the\u00a0easy yet fun side<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/em>Palanad\u2014well understood in France, but not necessarily abroad\u2014which was created not to fill a rating gap but to\u00a0provide maximum pleasure.<\/strong>“<\/em><\/p>\n

This isn’t the first time the architect-sailor, who co-signed\u00a0the Pogo RC<\/a>\u00a0with Bernard Nivelt, has designed a boat intended for IRC by drawing on open racing recipes. He previously designed\u00a0the Mach 45\u00a0Cartouche<\/em><\/a>, launched in 2006 in collaboration with Nicolas Groleau (founder of JPS), with which\u00a0Palanad 4<\/em>\u00a0shares a true lineage<\/strong>.\u00a0“<\/em>Cartouche\u00a0was already equipped with a canting keel; it was a very nice boat to sail with good results,”<\/em>\u00a0confirms Sam Manuard.\u00a0“With Nicolas, we said that if we imported everything we’ve learned from the latest generations of Class40 onto a boat of this size, it would be insane!”<\/em><\/p>\n

A UFO in the World of IRC<\/span><\/h2>\n

Canting keel, asymmetric daggerboards, a width of nearly 5 meters running all the way to the transom, an immense cockpit, and double companionways\u2014Palanad 4<\/em>, launched on July 19, 2025, is a UFO in the world of IRC racing<\/strong>, and not just for her\u00a0unapologetic scow hull. To describe his approach, the architect begins by noting that\u00a0the IRC<\/strong>\u00a0“is a rating rule that forbids nothing<\/strong>; it ultimately leaves more freedom than certain box rules,\u00a0with a few blind spots\u2014including hull stability, which is not measured.”<\/em><\/p>\n

From this perspective,\u00a0Palanad 4<\/em>\u00a0is the exact opposite of a TP52<\/strong>, many of which continue to enjoy successful IRC careers after a first life in Grand Prix racing (Audi Med Cup then 52 Super Series). The hull offset when heeled and the canting ballast allow the Manuard design to be\u00a0both more powerful and lighter<\/strong>, thanks to her\u00a0lower ballast mass and reduced crew (7 during the transat), for a rating very close to a TP52 (TCC 1.426, versus a range of 1.360 to 1.400 for TPs). Finally,\u00a0the cant of the keel (the axis is not horizontal) generates lift<\/strong>, making this boat very aerial when downwind in heavy seas.<\/p>\n

“Another major driver of performance in IRC is the waterline length,”<\/em>\u00a0continues Sam Manuard.\u00a0“If you reach planning speed faster than larger boats, you can come out on top.”<\/em>\u00a0The low-slung nose of\u00a0Palanad 4<\/em>\u00a0reduces the static waterline by nearly 3 meters<\/strong>\u00a0and visibly exploits a rating gap\u2014even though the IRC rule already modified its measurement of forward overhangs in 2026. Asked about this,\u00a0Ludovic Abollivier<\/strong>, director of the IRC calculation center for the Yacht Club de France (which holds the rule alongside the RORC), confirms:\u00a0“The inclusion of scow hulls began on January 1, 2026<\/strong>, but the IRC acts in small steps. We don’t bring out the heavy artillery in the first year, and it is very likely that additional taxation will be adopted in 2027.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Will the Concept Set a Trend?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Needless to say,\u00a0Palanad 4<\/em>‘s future performances will be closely watched, starting with the\u00a0RORC Caribbean 600<\/a>, which sets off on Monday, February 23rd.\u00a0Olivier Magr\u00e9 is taking on a crew built for victory<\/strong>, including Spaniard Pablo Santurde and Briton Will Harris, even if the competition promises to be tougher than in the transat, with IRC benchmarks like\u00a0R\u00e1n<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Daguet 5<\/em>.\u00a0“There’s a strong field, and they’ve been warned,”<\/em>\u00a0smiles the owner, for whom this 600-mile race\u2014a giant slalom through the Caribbean islands\u2014is\u00a0“the true test for the boat.<\/strong>“<\/em><\/p>\n

On board during the Transatlantic Race (though he won’t be for the Caribbean 600), Swiss sailor\u00a0Simon Koster<\/strong>, who oversaw the entire build and managed the electrical installation, seems confident:\u00a0“It will be more competitive, but it’s\u00a0a great course for the boat because there is very little VMG sailing<\/strong>. It’s at intermediate angles that\u00a0<\/em>Palanad\u00a0makes the difference. With her asymmetric boards, she can also sail very high, but she needs speed.”<\/em>\u00a0In everyone’s opinion,\u00a0the boat’s weak point is not upwind, but light air and choppy seas<\/strong>, where the wetted surface area is a disadvantage compared to narrower hulls.\u00a0“We are at V1 of the boat, while others are already at V10. We’ll need to keep working on the sails, and we are still far from getting 100% out of the boat,”<\/em>\u00a0tempers Sam Manuard.<\/p>\n

Can the concept gain traction in the very Anglo-Saxon world of yachting? Olivier Magr\u00e9, who invested\u00a02 million euros in this boat\u2014carbon-built down to the shrouds<\/strong>\u2014and who showed her off in Antigua, wants to believe so:\u00a0“People are surprised by her simplicity, her seaworthiness, and how watertight she is<\/strong>\u00a0compared to other models. We might face rating changes, but I believe it’s the direction of history.”<\/em>\u00a0After this Caribbean campaign, the immediate direction of\u00a0Palanad 4<\/em>‘s history will be to head back to Europe for a program including the Spi Ouest-France, the ArMen Race, and the Round Britain and Ireland Race.<\/p>\n
