It is the Solo Guy Cotten<\/a>\u00a0that, from March 6 to 14, will kick off\u00a0the new season of the Figaro Beneteau circuit<\/strong>, marked by a reshuffled calendar,\u00a0with a springtime Solitaire,<\/strong>\u00a0but also\u00a0the return of former heavyweights of the circuit<\/strong>, coming back to test themselves against the younger generation.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

In this winter marked by a succession of storms, it is fair to say that the sailors of the Figaro Beneteau class have spent plenty of time on the water pushing hard! And for good reason: with\u00a0a Solitaire du Figaro Paprec brought forward to May<\/strong>\u00a0(May 17\u2013June 7), everyone has been diligent in training, especially as\u00a0the announced return of several big names in the discipline<\/strong>\u00a0has added \u201ca good extra dose of spice<\/strong>\u00a0to an already very competitive fleet<\/em>,\u201d rejoices\u00a0\u00c9l\u00e9onore de Grissac<\/strong>, the class\u2019s general secretary. She reports \u201ca stable number of memberships<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0around forty expressions of interest<\/strong>\u00a0for the four races of the\u00a0French Elite Offshore Racing Championship<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among them, therefore, are illustrious returnees, from\u00a0Yoann Richomme<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Nicolas Lunven<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Xavier Macaire<\/strong>, as well as, for part of the season,\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou, Nicolas Troussel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Adrien Hardy<\/strong>, while\u00a0Lo\u00efs Berrehar<\/strong>, younger than his elders (32), returns under Banque Populaire colors.\u00a0\u201cWe didn\u2019t coordinate, but I know why so many of us are going back: it\u2019s where we grew up and we know that\u00a0we\u2019ll find the same thing again\u2014close racing, challenge, rigor and difficulty<\/strong>. The true strength of the Figaro class is that it guarantees all that. Everyone is on equal terms; once you\u2019ve re-learned the ropes, it\u2019s the sailor who makes the difference,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Yoann Richomme.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know any former Figaro sailor who would say \u2018never again\u2019; there\u2019s a form of addiction<\/strong>. We enjoy it just as much every time, and the level is extremely high,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Xavier Macaire, who returns under Snef colors to celebrate ten years of partnership and will contest his 12th Solitaire du Figaro. Another returnee, Nicolas Lunven (PRB),\u00a0told us<\/a>\u00a0three weeks ago:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a class I\u2019ve remained very attached to<\/strong>. I had many great moments there, as well as setbacks and failures, but they helped me grow, because Figaro is solo and one-design racing, which means that when it doesn\u2019t work, it\u2019s because you weren\u2019t good enough, and that pushes you to improve. This time, I felt that\u00a0it was the right moment to come back, without being too old<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBringing the Solitaire forward
\nchanges the dynamic\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

And in what state have these veterans found the circuit after a few years away?\u00a0\u201cI truly feel like I\u2019ve found\u00a0the same collective intelligence and the same profiles<\/strong>\u00a0as before,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Yoann Richomme, double Solitaire winner in 2016 and 2019, the year of his last participation (and the first for the Figaro 3).\u00a0\u201cTalented youngsters just starting out, others entering the \u2018money time\u2019 of their third or fourth season, returnees\u2026\u00a0They\u2019re going to make life difficult for us<\/strong>, for sure\u2014we hope to give them a hard time as well.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The only regret for the skipper of\u00a0Paprec<\/em>, whose new Imoca is currently under construction, is having lacked time to train.\u00a0\u201cBringing the Solitaire forward to May<\/em>\u00a0inevitably changes the dynamic, but if you don\u2019t want challenges, you don\u2019t do Figaro. So I\u2019ve put my foot back in the door; I don\u2019t have all the pieces yet, but\u00a0I hope to jump on the competition train with the Solo Guy Cotten<\/strong>\u00a0so as to be fully ready in three months,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0smiles the runner-up of the 2024 Vend\u00e9e Globe.<\/p>\n

This calendar change\u00a0also makes life harder for newcomers<\/strong>\u00a0to the circuit, such as Fran\u00e7ois Jambou, Pierrick Letouz\u00e9, former Croatian skier Ivica Kostelic or\u00a0Quentin Mocudet<\/strong>, fresh from the Mini circuit (runner-up in the 2025 Mini Transat series), who will have to get up to speed quickly.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s true that we were behind before even starting,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he smiles.\u00a0\u201cI could have skipped the Solitaire this year, but I figured it\u2019s always better to race it than to watch the others!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSailors are struggling
\nto secure budgets\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Why has the Solitaire start been moved from September to mid-May?\u00a0\u201cIt was a request from the organizer, OC Sport, who hopes that\u00a0this slot will make it easier to secure host cities<\/strong>, partner participation and overall visibility,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0replies\u00a0Jean-Bernard Le Boucher<\/strong>, the class president.\u00a0\u201cThe economic climate is difficult; we know we need to try things, so we\u2019re proactive in moving forward together.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0He adds that in 2027,\u00a0\u201cit is very likely that the Solitaire will once again take place in the autumn, with the Transat Paprec at the start of the season.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Beyond the economic context, the upcoming municipal elections are not helping matters, to the point that\u00a0the finish city of the Solitaire has still not been finalized<\/strong>, nor has the route of the Tour Voile, raced since 2023 in Figaro boats and now a springboard for many young sailors. \u201cOverall, the Figaro class is doing relatively well; the launch of the Academy has paid off and allowed us to have\u00a0a pool of young sailors eager to continue on the circuit<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0believes \u00c9l\u00e9onore de Grissac, who nevertheless adds:\u00a0\u201cBut we know we must remain vigilant and that\u00a0this is a pivotal moment for the entire ecosystem<\/strong>. Organizers are facing difficulties, sailors are struggling to secure budgets, and we need to support them all the more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Facing these challenges,\u00a0Arno Biston<\/strong>, third in the last Solitaire du Figaro Paprec aboard\u00a0Article 1,\u00a0<\/em>confides:\u00a0\u201cI had hoped to secure a full budget after my good results last year, but that hasn\u2019t happened.\u00a0Trying to do everything on a small budget, even with the best will in the world, just doesn\u2019t work<\/strong>, so I had to make strategic choices: I will only race the solo events on my boat and will team up with another skipper on his boat for the double-handed races. It also helps preserve my sails for the Solitaire while still scoring championship points. It\u2019s a shame because it means fewer boats on the starting lines, but that\u2019s today\u2019s reality! We already have the advantage of being\u00a0a relatively low-cost class compared to its importance<\/strong>\u00a0in the French offshore racing landscape.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnother ten years
\nwith the Figaro 3\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cOur way of supporting sailors is also to guarantee a durable boat so that budgets don\u2019t spiral. We\u2019re approaching ten years of the Figaro 3, and\u00a0our goal is to do another ten years with it<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Jean-Bernard Le Boucher.\u00a0\u201cTo achieve that, we\u2019re going to launch a major project to reinforce the one-design concept and upgrade areas of the boat that need to evolve.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

At the same time, the class wants to explore new territories and formats, such as\u00a0the new double-handed race<\/strong>\u00a0added to the calendar at the end of the season (August 24\u2013September 7), between Vend\u00e9e and Portugal.\u00a0\u201cIt will start from Port Bourgenay and head to Lagos via Madeira. The second leg will finish on the island of Yeu, so in total we\u2019re looking at at least 13 days at sea, including 8\u20139 on the first 1,600-mile leg. It will be\u00a0true offshore racing<\/strong>; we really wanted to bring a bit of travel and adventure back into the program,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains the organizer,\u00a0Estelle Graveleau<\/strong>, former class general secretary and initiator of the Sardinha Cup (three editions in 2019, 2021 and 2022).<\/p>\n

She adds:\u00a0\u201cThe race will count for the French championship, with a coefficient of 3, so it will ensure\u00a0suspense right to the end of the season<\/strong>. The project is ambitious, but we\u2019re seeing interest everywhere we go, and we already have\u00a022 declarations of intent<\/strong>. Nothing is guaranteed yet, but the bet is on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
