Launched in 2017, the\u00a0ETF26 Series<\/a>, which will feature five events in 2026, the first from March 11 to 14 in Mar Menor (Spain), are reaching\u00a0a new milestone<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0a boat that now also flies upwind<\/strong>. An opportunity for\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0to take stock of the circuit and the class with its promoters and several skippers.<\/em><\/p>\n

Five months after the previous season ended in Mar Menor (Spain),\u00a0which crowned<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Entreprises du Morbihan team led by Matthieu Salomon<\/strong>\u00a0for the third consecutive year, the 9th season of the ETF26 Series, a circuit launched in 2017 by Jean-Pierre Dick and acquired five years later by\u00a0Pierre Picot\u00a0<\/strong>through his company Anemo Sailing, gets underway at the same venue, near Murcia, from March 11 to 14. The major new feature this season is that the foiling catamarans will now\u00a0fly not only downwind, but also upwind<\/strong>, thanks to the combination of rudder winglets, new foils and a new set of sails.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is\u00a0the culmination of several years of development<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0comments Pierre Picot.\u00a0\u201cWe had already modified the rudders last year by adding winglets and a differential adjustment, while the new foils<\/em>\u00a0[designed by Guillaume Verdier and built by Avel Robotics]\u00a0were tested at the final Grand Prix of the season, with a longer tip, reduced chord and a more aerodynamic and more cambered section providing\u00a0greater lift<\/strong>. As for the sails, designed by Mathieu Guillaud of North Sails, they help reduce aerodynamic drag.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

As a result, the ETF26 will now\u00a0fly all the time and earlier<\/strong>, from 7 knots of wind downwind and around 10 knots upwind, explains the man who says he has\u00a0invested 150,000 euros in technical development<\/strong>\u00a0of the catamarans since 2022.\u00a0\u201cThe goal was to give the boat a second life to\u00a0start a new multi-year cycle<\/strong>\u00a0and continue attracting teams aiming for the highest level,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Pierre Picot, with eight teams entered this season.<\/p>\n

Attracting the \u201cOlympians\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n

What do the sailors think?\u00a0\u201cThe new version of the boat played a major role in my renewed commitment<\/strong>\u00a0this year,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0replies Matthieu Salomon, who is embarking on his fifth consecutive season.\u00a0\u201cIt will significantly change the nature of the racing, particularly tactically, with a more demanding platform as we will reach higher speeds upwind. And\u00a0from a sporting perspective, everyone is starting somewhat from scratch<\/strong>, it\u2019s going to be very open.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

For\u00a0L\u00e9o Chapalain<\/strong>, who runs the ETF26 program within the\u00a0K-Challenge Academy<\/a>\u00a0(two boats entered, as last year), moving to full foiling meets the expectations of a team competing on the circuit this year\u00a0with a view to the Youth and Women\u2019s America\u2019s Cup<\/strong>\u00a0(spring 2027 in Naples). The youth and women\u2019s crews are currently being selected, with the announcement due in late March\/early April, so K-Challenge will not be present in Mar Menor.\u00a0\u201cThe ETF26 in its new version is a great platform for crewed sailing on a high-speed foiling boat,\u00a0it is getting even closer to the AC40<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he comments.<\/p>\n

Attracting America\u2019s Cup teams is indeed one of the ambitions of Pierre Picot and\u00a0Maxime Grimard<\/strong>, the class manager, who are also targeting SailGP teams as well as Olympic sailing,\u00a0particularly sailors competing in the 49er and Nacra 17<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cWe will take advantage of the\u00a0World Championship in May in Quiberon<\/a>\u00a0to offer teams the chance to try the boat. We clearly position ourselves as a bridge between Olympic sailing and professional sailing; the circuit is perfectly suited,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0confirms Pierre Picot.<\/p>\n

Budgets of 100,000
\nto 200,000 euros<\/span><\/h2>\n

And indeed, the circuit is attracting \u201cOlympians,\u201d with Nacra specialists this season including\u00a0Tim Mourniac<\/strong>, back with his father Jean-Christophe and Team Pro (they were absent in 2025), and the British pair\u00a0John Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Anna Burnet<\/strong>, reigning world champions \u2013 as well as 49er sailors\u00a0Cl\u00e9ment P\u00e9quin<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Erwan Fischer<\/strong>, 2024 world champions, who join the circuit with\u00a0Team Sport Bams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBams, who support us in the 49er, wanted us to run another project that would allow us to make a living from our sport while keeping the ultimate goal of Olympic gold in Los Angeles,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Erwan Fischer.\u00a0\u201cOften, dual projects help improve performance, but also allow us to race more, as\u00a0there are fewer and fewer regattas in the 49er. Since we had the opportunity to discover the ETF26 circuit by doing two Grands Prix with Tim<\/em>\u00a0(Mourniac)\u00a0after the Paris Games and we loved the boat,\u00a0we approached the class to see how to align the calendars<\/strong>\u00a0and enable us to compete in the full season.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Team Sport Bams has therefore purchased a second-hand ETF26 \u2013 150,000 euros with the new foils (55,000 for annual charter, sails included) \u2013 for a total budget,\u00a0\u201cincluding the boat and payroll, of around 400,000 euros,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0according to Erwan Fischer. Average operating budgets range, depending on the team,\u00a0between 100,000 and 200,000 euros<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cThe boat and the circuit are really great for a reasonable amount; my partners are extremely satisfied with the sailing\/visibility mix we offer them,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0comments\u00a0Charles Dorange<\/strong>. At the helm of Blueshift Sailing Team, he has assembled a European crew this year, with Belgium\u2019s Henri Demesmaeker and Sweden\u2019s Rasmus Rosengren, on a 100,000-euro budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d like 10\u201312 teams\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

For Matthieu Salomon, who continues this year with the same crew (Franck Cammas, Solune Robert, Valentin Bellet) and is targeting a total budget of 200,000 euros, the ETF26 allows partners to\u00a0\u201cget hands-on experience of a boat otherwise out of reach for most people<\/strong>, knowing that on corporate days, we take around a dozen people sailing each day. It\u2019s a very strong team-building platform, and during regattas they are truly immersed, often in great locations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s venues are Mar Menor to open the season,\u00a0Lake Garda<\/strong>\u00a0in June and July,\u00a0Lorient<\/strong>\u00a0in mid-August and\u00a0Quiberon<\/strong>\u00a0in October, five events organized by the class with a total budget of 100,000 euros and self-funded through entry fees (11,000 euros per team).\u00a0\u201cThe main new venue this season is Lorient<\/strong>, where we\u2019ve wanted to go for several years and which has a somewhat historic significance for us, because the boat was born there,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Maxime Grimard.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re finally going there on a high-attendance weekend<\/em>\u00a0(August 12\u201315), and we hope it will\u00a0boost the circuit\u2019s visibility among the general public and partners<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The class\u2019s objective is to\u00a0secure a title sponsor<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 around 100,000 euros \u2013\u00a0\u201cto grow the events, improve communication and provide more services to the teams,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Pierre Picot, but also to attract more teams, particularly international ones.\u00a0\u201cFour boats are still available; we would like 10\u201312 teams in the near future,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he adds.<\/p>\n
