If the Mini 6.50 season<\/a>\u00a0kicks off on 6 March in Spain with the\u00a0Mini Petrolera<\/strong>, followed by the Arcipelago 6.50, it is the\u00a0Plastimo Lorient Mini<\/strong>\u00a0that will truly launch the season on 9 April. Between declining memberships and fewer new builds, a new race and changes to the Mini Transat course,\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0takes stock.<\/em><\/p>\n

“527 members in 2023, 576 in 2024, and 474 in 2025, we are in a dip,”<\/em>\u00a0introduces\u00a0Annabelle Moreau<\/strong>, secretary of the Classe Mini since 2001.\u00a0“And we already know that\u00a02026 will see a further slight decline<\/strong><\/em>,” adds\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Villain-Amirat<\/strong>, the new president, who took over from Romain Bigot earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The cause?\u00a0“The economic context, which is a bit delicate,”<\/em>\u00a0replies Villain-Amirat.\u00a0“And there have always been cycles of low and high membership, roughly six years long. When there are many members, qualifying for races becomes harder, boat prices rise, which can discourage some sailors and explain the decline. It takes time to rebound, but\u00a0it should pick up as second-hand boat prices decrease<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Currently, a fully equipped Maxi 6.50 (Plan Raison) costs between\u00a0\u20ac100,000 and \u20ac110,000<\/strong>, while a Pogo 3 costs between \u20ac60,000 and \u20ac80,000.\u00a0“Being less competitive than the scows, the market is tougher for these,”<\/em>\u00a0notes the president.<\/p>\n

A Sluggish Market<\/span><\/h2>\n

While the second-hand market struggles,\u00a0the new-build market is stagnant: only 6 boats were built<\/strong>\u00a0last year\u2014one prototype and five series models\u2014far below the class limit of 20 in 2025. This limit aimed to smooth the previous boom cycle and increase boat longevity.\u00a0“We had almost an entire fleet built in two years, which was inconsistent with the number of existing 6.50s,”<\/em>\u00a0explains\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Villain-Amirat<\/strong>. For boatyards, the impact is harsh.<\/p>\n

“We built three Maxis last year<\/em>\u00a0and currently have\u00a0no orders<\/strong><\/em>,” laments\u00a0Denis Bourbigot<\/strong>, manager of IDB Marine, which has produced 63 Raison design units in total.\u00a0The quotas were an absurd decision<\/strong>\u00a0because it was predictable that construction would naturally slow down, especially given limited race slots. This negatively affected class attendance.\u00a0It’s generally hard to maintain continuity with a board that changes annually<\/strong>. I personally would not invest in tools for building a new boat while rules and measurements keep changing.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Bourbigot is referring to the\u00a0revamp of the series measurement rules<\/strong>, currently underway to allow more durable boats. Meetings with industry professionals are planned to draft a preliminary version by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

New Races on the Calendar<\/span><\/h2>\n

The calendar adds a new race for older-generation boats (pre-2014 series and prototypes first measured before 31 December 2009),\u00a0La Ministorique du Crouesty<\/strong>, starting 4 September. A 2024 trial run by the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des R\u00e9gates de Caen-Ouistreham had only 11 participants out of 65 eligible boats, so it was not repeated.<\/p>\n

Following a new call for bids,\u00a0Yacht-Club du Crouesty Arzon<\/strong>\u00a0was chosen to organise this race in even-numbered years.\u00a0“The project, supported by about ten Mini sailors training here, appeals to us because it offers experienced sailors\u00a0a race on equal footing<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Marc Eymond, YCCA president. The 500-mile solo or double-handed route\u00a0“is not fully defined yet, but\u00a0the Scilly Isles are likely included<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0he adds.<\/p>\n

Another novelty:\u00a0the Calvados Cup becomes a French Championship race<\/strong>\u00a0“to make it more attractive and encourage skippers to race outside the Brittany coast”<\/em>, notes the class president. Additionally,\u00a0the SAS (Les Sables-Les A\u00e7ores-Les Sables) is renamed Mini Atlantique<\/strong>\u00a0“to give it a grander character”<\/em>. Finally, Mini 6.50s are invited to\u00a0Palma Vela<\/a>, a multi-class race in April in Palma de Mallorca.<\/p>\n

Changes for the Mini Transat<\/span><\/h2>\n

The dense calendar partly motivated\u00a0Julien Letissier<\/strong>\u00a0(Fr\u00e9rots Branchet<\/em>) to commit to a sixth season and a fourth Mini Transat in 2027 (4th in 2025, 3rd in 2023 in prototype, 14th in series in 2019).\u00a0“It’s\u00a0one of the circuits offering the most miles in a year<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0notes the Port-la-For\u00eat skipper. Three other factors influenced his decision:\u00a0“My partner wanted to continue, the second-hand market is tough, and I did not want to sell my boat cheaply, but\u00a0the decisive factor was the new Mini Transat course to Brazil<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(2027 and 2029 editions from La Rochelle to Salvador de Bahia,\u00a0see article<\/a>)\u00a0which suits foiling projects we\u2019ve been considering with David Raison for years”<\/em>\u2014the boat will be foiled in January 2027.<\/p>\n

Caroline Boule<\/strong>, returning to the helm of\u00a0Nicomatic Petit Bateau<\/em>\u00a0aiming to win the Mini Atlantique\u2014“neither Beno\u00eet [Marie, her husband, last year\u2019s skipper, NDLR] nor I have yet won THE big race of the season”<\/em>\u2014also finds\u00a0the new route\u00a0“great for foilers”<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em>\u00a0though her participation is not yet confirmed.<\/p>\n

“I want the route to be interesting for skippers and followers alike. My goal is to place\u00a0a minimum number of marks to provide as many options as possible<\/strong>, without spreading the fleet too thin across the Atlantic since I only have seven support boats,”<\/em>\u00a0notes Annabelle Moreau, succeeding the iconic Denis Hugues as race director.<\/p>\n

Every Mile Counts<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Regarding Mini Transat qualification, while the process itself does not change,\u00a0the method for ranking candidates<\/strong>\u00a0when oversubscribed (90 spots)\u00a0evolves<\/strong>. Now, all miles sailed in the past five years, regardless of boat, will count.\u00a0“The goal is to reward experience and help newcomers test a Mini before investing in a boat,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Timoth\u00e9e Villain-Amirat.\u00a0“Another minor drawback of the old system was that if you had an accident with your boat and had to change mid-race, you lost all the miles you had accumulated.”<\/em><\/p>\n

New measures include\u00a0reintroducing a seventh sail<\/strong>. After six sails in 2023, the class now permits a\u00a0heavy spinnaker of max 45 m\u00b2<\/strong>\u00a0“because many skippers removed code 5 sails, widening the performance gap between experienced sailors and scows,”<\/em>\u00a0explains the president. Preference lists for race entry have been removed because they\u00a0“encouraged skippers to register for all races to ensure they sailed enough miles,”<\/em>\u00a0notes Moreau, leading to waitlists that\u00a0“gave false hopes to organizers who scrambled for spots, yet\u00a0no 2025 race\u2014except the Mini Transat\u2014was fully booked<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite the slight slowdown, there are already\u00a067 mixed duos<\/strong>\u2014134 sailors\u2014registered for the season\u2019s first major event, the Plastimo Lorient Mini on 9 April, a figure envied by many organizers.<\/p>\n
