Back on the Figaro Beneteau circuit this year while waiting for the launch of his future Imoca in just over a year\u2019s time, Lo\u00efs Berrehar<\/strong>\u00a0stood out at the\u00a0Solo Guy Cotten<\/strong>, the first race of the season, by winning the 240-mile offshore race on Thursday evening.\u00a0Fifth overall<\/a>\u00a0in an event won by\u00a0Paul Morvan<\/strong>, the Banque Populaire skipper (32) looks back on the race and discusses his Imoca project.<\/em><\/p>\n

Before going into the details of the race, tell us how your return to the Figaro circuit has gone this year, given that you actually only left it for one season, in 2025?<\/strong>
\nWhen we mapped out the roadmap to the Vend\u00e9e Globe with the Banque Populaire team at the beginning of last year, we realised there wasn\u2019t actually much solo racing on the programme, apart from the final year in Imoca\u00a0(2028)<\/em>. So we looked at different options and quickly agreed that\u00a0the Solitaire du Figaro was perfect for solo racing<\/strong>. We therefore chartered a boat\u00a0(Erwan Le Draoulec\u2019s)<\/em>, launched her\u00a0on 15 January, and I took part in all the winter training sessions in Port-la-For\u00eat. The idea was to try to get back as quickly as possible to the level of preparation I had with my previous Figaro\u00a0(Skipper Macif)<\/em>, especially since I knew\u00a0we had to push hard, with the Solitaire just two months away<\/strong>\u00a0(starting on 17 May)<\/em>. Quite quickly,\u00a0I was pleasantly surprised<\/strong>: things came back rather well and I was matching up well with the others in training in Port-la-For\u00eat.<\/p>\n

What was your mindset going into this Solo Guy Cotten?<\/strong>
\nI knew it was the first and last solo race before the Solitaire. So in my head,\u00a0I was telling myself it would be good to be competitive<\/strong>. And from the start of the first coastal race I could see I wasn\u2019t far from the mark \u2013 I got away well and had good speed. It didn\u2019t end very well, but it showed that we had done a relatively good job.<\/p>\n

You finished 27th and 21st in the two coastal races, which probably weren\u2019t the results you expected. How did you react on the evening after the second leg?<\/strong>
\nIn the first one I got caught in a squall, then made some poor choices \u2013 it was a bit of a downward spiral. The next day I made a mistake on another competitor and had to do a 360 penalty, so I wasn\u2019t very good. So\u00a0I was disappointed, but I wasn\u2019t in\u00a0“nothing is working”<\/em>\u00a0mode<\/strong>. It\u2019s pretty much the only year since I\u2019ve been racing Figaro that I\u2019m not targeting the French Offshore Elite Championship, so I wasn\u2019t devastated thinking these results would ruin my season.<\/p>\n

“I think experience made the difference”<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

And how did the big 240-mile leg unfold?<\/strong>
\nI made a decent start, not amazing, but then managed to find good speed and good positioning on the first upwind leg to l\u2019Occidentale. I made a small mistake late in the night that cost me my lead, but I still rounded the Audierne buoy in first place. After that,\u00a0the downwind leg was interesting, with small speed differences<\/strong>\u00a0and some sailors performing well, especially Paul\u00a0(Morvan)<\/em>, who made a profitable gybe inside, slightly further north. Not only was he fast, but he also had a better angle, which allowed him to be almost a mile ahead.<\/p>\n

How did you manage to come back?<\/strong>
\nIt came down to the rounding of Groix;\u00a0I think experience made the difference<\/strong>. The wind angle, the gusts, the sequence of manoeuvres, the fatigue \u2013 those are things I know almost by heart on these legs. So I took the helm, trimmed the boat properly and put Paul in my sights, managing to overtake him two miles from the finish. After that, the leg was tough. I have a certain ability to push myself when needed, but\u00a0that one really hurt<\/strong>, with huge swell and horrible cross seas. I hit myself several times inside the boat \u2013 it was genuinely hard going. That\u2019s why I was so satisfied at the finish: we spent a lot of time working this winter to get back up to speed, me sailing in bad weather, the team tinkering with the boat, and\u00a0I was happy it paid off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your view of the competition after this race?<\/strong>
\nWhile I was sailing Imoca last year, some sailors improved enormously in Figaro.\u00a0The competition is seriously sharp<\/strong>\u00a0and I had to give everything to win that leg. Today there are very young sailors who are impressive \u2013 I\u2019m thinking of\u00a0Tom Goron<\/strong>, he\u2019s barely 20\u00a0(19)<\/em>, we have more than ten years between us, which feels strange!\u00a0Paul Morvan<\/strong>\u00a0as well \u2013 I didn\u2019t know him before, he\u2019s really solid. And among the slightly older sailors who have also progressed a lot, there\u2019s\u00a0Hugo Dhallenne<\/strong>, who is always in the right moves; he\u2019s very strong.<\/p>\n

“A great preview of the baby!”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

And what did you think of those often referred to as the \u201cold guard\u201d (Yoann Richomme, J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou, Nicolas Lunven, Xavier Macaire, Adrien Hardy), who came back to take on the younger sailors and who, for some of them, struggled during this Solo Guy Cotten?<\/strong>
\nIt wasn\u2019t easy for them, but it wasn\u2019t easy for me either! I was talking about the ten-year generation gap between me and the youngsters; here it\u2019s ten years the other way, so twenty years or more.\u00a0I\u2019m really impressed by their approach<\/strong>. It\u2019s very honourable and respectful to the circuit to come back and compete on such a demanding boat \u2013 honestly, the conditions we had during the offshore race were tough! These guys have each won the Solitaire two or three times, achieved loads in Imoca, and yet they have the humility to return to the Figaro exercise. And\u00a0they\u2019re far from being out of their depth<\/strong>, with several around the top 10\u00a0(J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou 10th, Nicolas Lunven 11th, Adrien Hardy 12th)<\/em>. You have to remember that we have a lot of hours on this boat, which they don\u2019t, but I think\u00a0on the Solitaire, after three legs of four days each, they\u2019ll be right there<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Is the Solitaire really a major goal for you?<\/strong>
\nThe main objective is to\u00a0race solo<\/strong>. Returning to the Figaro circuit is an opportunity to try to win it, but that\u2019s not the goal in itself; the project is to build a boat for the Vend\u00e9e Globe, which is the priority. That said, I\u2019ll be on the start line with a top team and a top boat, I\u2019ve never won it yet, so\u00a0yes, I\u2019d really love to<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Speaking of that Imoca project, how is it progressing?<\/strong>
\nEverything is going well: the team is being structured and\u00a0the boat has been under construction for two months<\/strong>. We\u2019ve completed the first curing phase and it\u2019s extremely exciting. Especially since in the shed next door there are\u00a0TRR<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Malizia<\/em>\u00a0(sisterships, the three teams are collaborating,\u00a0see our article<\/a>)<\/em>, which are three or four months away from launching.\u00a0The boats have really taken shape; I\u2019ve been able to step inside them and it gives a great preview of the baby!<\/strong>\u00a0Malizia<\/em>\u00a0will be launched in early July and I can\u2019t wait to sail a few miles on her. On our side we\u2019re still working on elements that haven\u2019t yet gone into production: we haven\u2019t finalised everything regarding the pilots, electronics or sails, and we\u2019re not quite finished designing our future foils\u2026<\/p>\n

You said you were eager to sail on\u00a0Malizia<\/em>. Does that mean you\u2019ll race with them next summer, notably in The Ocean Race Atlantic? And then The Ocean early next year?<\/strong>
\nThe programme isn\u2019t completely finalised yet, but\u00a0I\u2019d like to do as much as possible with them, yes<\/strong>. And the aim is to sail in the Southern Ocean in an Imoca, ideally racing on the sistership of my future boat.<\/p>\n
