Banque Populaire<\/strong>\u00a0announced on Monday\u00a0the launch of a new Ultim<\/a>\u00a0for 2029, designed by Antoine Koch’s\u00a0AKO<\/strong>\u00a0and built at\u00a0CDK<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0tells you more about the decision made by the sponsor and the future trimaran for\u00a0Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

A year after launching\u00a0a new Imoca for Lo\u00efs Berrehar<\/a>\u00a0with a view to the 2028 Vend\u00e9e Globe, Banque Populaire formalized on Monday\u00a0the construction of the future\u00a0Maxi Banque Populaire 15<\/em><\/strong>, the result, according to Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h, of a long-term reflection:\u00a0“With the leaders of Banque Populaire, we often have the opportunity to discuss the long term. At a certain point,\u00a0the question arose about the future of our Ultim<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>Banque Populaire XI (VPLP design, launched in April 2021); we wondered at what point it might become less competitive compared to the competition, the perspective was around 2030, 2032 or 2034.”<\/em><\/p>\n

One element then accelerated the reflection: the announcement of the launch of\u00a0Gitana 18<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by the Gitana Team.\u00a0“In any case, it allowed us to have\u00a0a slightly clearer timing<\/strong>, in the sense that we told ourselves that if we wanted to be present on the 2030 Route du Rhum with a boat capable of competing with<\/em>\u00a0Gitana 18, we probably had to go with a new boat,”<\/em>\u00a0the skipper continues.\u00a0“We know that\u00a0<\/em>BP XI\u00a0will still be very high-performing in the next two to three years, but\u00a0we also know that we are reaching a bit of a glass ceiling<\/strong>: if we want to optimize her significantly, we have to make very major structural modifications.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Director of Team Banque Populaire,\u00a0Erwan Steff<\/strong>\u00a0adds:\u00a0“We risked finding ourselves at the load limit everywhere, on the platform, the beams, the floats, so it would have been a long, costly, and uncertain shipyard project. We were all a bit marked by the evolutions on certain boats that were more or less successful.\u00a0We therefore preferred to start again from a blank page<\/strong>\u00a0with today’s state of the art.”<\/em>\u00a0For Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h,\u00a0“this isn’t a whim of the type<\/em>\u00a0‘the others have a new boat, we want one too,’ it’s in the DNA of the Banque Populaire project to be\u00a0at the start of the major races with, always, boats capable of winning<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A unanimous decision<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Concretely, Team Banque Populaire began working on the subject in the summer of 2025, with the objective, according to the skipper, of\u00a0“building a case so that the sponsor has all the elements<\/strong>: cost, timing, stakes, race program.”<\/em>\u00a0Erwan Steff adds: “We then began to discuss more officially with the different levels of decision-making at Banque Populaire: the sports commission, the finance commission, then the board of directors of the Bateau Banque Populaire company, to whom we presented the project upon the arrival of the Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or in Martinique. They gave a favorable opinion, subject to an agreement from the two Banque Populaire colleges, the general managers and the presidents, who gave\u00a0their unanimous go on December 18<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“The decision was unanimous at our governance level,”<\/em>\u00a0confirms\u00a0Pierre-Laurent Berne<\/strong>, development director of the Banques Populaires.\u00a0“I have a fairly simple phrase to summarize our commitment:\u00a0shipowner, competitor, winner<\/strong>. Given what we see from the competition, we want to continue to have a high-performance boat because we have a team and skippers who are as well; it seems essential to us to have all the ingredients to aim for victory.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Will this new Ultim require an additional budgetary effort from the sponsor?\u00a0“No. When we commit to the long term as we do\u2014the launch of\u00a0<\/em>Banque Populaire 15\u00a0will coincide with the 40th anniversary of our involvement in sailing\u2014the notion of a short-term budget makes little sense. Our annual budget, which includes sailing and surfing, is around\u00a08 million euros per year<\/strong>; it allows us to approach the construction of an Imoca and an Ultim calmly, without having to increase it.\u00a0We also hope to sell our current boat well<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0At what price?\u00a0“It won’t be much more expensive than a new last-generation Imoca\u00a0<\/em>[between 8 and 10 million euros, Editor’s note]\u00a0for a high-performance Ultim available turnkey after the Arkea Ultim Challenge<\/em>\u00a0(first quarter of 2028),”<\/em>\u00a0answers Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h.<\/p>\n

A complete design team<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Team Banque Populaire isn’t there yet, having already started working on its future Ultim last summer, consulting\u00a0three architectural firms<\/strong>: Guillaume Verdier, a solution quickly ruled out by the latter, designer of\u00a0Gitana 18<\/em>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0“he told us it was going to be complicated to meet our request,”<\/em>\u00a0indicates Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h \u2013, AKO (Antoine Koch Oc\u00e9an), and VPLP. These last two were tasked with presenting\u00a0a preliminary project<\/strong>\u00a0to a commission composed of the skipper, Erwan Steff, S\u00e9bastien Josse (sports director), Pierre-Emmanuel H\u00e9riss\u00e9 (technical director), Ma\u00ebl Devoldere and Cl\u00e9ment Durrafourg (design office), which was done in December.<\/p>\n

“After reviewing them each once,\u00a0we confirmed the choice of AKO in January<\/strong>; it was one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make in the last two or three years, because both projects were extremely well put together,”<\/em>\u00a0comments Erwan Steff. What made the difference in favor of Antoine Koch’s design team?\u00a0“Partly\u00a0the fact that they rely on a team of specialists from different worlds<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>responds Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h. Also Antoine’s sailor side, who doesn’t necessarily have as much Ultim experience as VPLP\u2014even if he participated in the entire design of\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 17\u2014but has sailed a lot.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Antoine Koch, naturally satisfied to have been chosen\u2014“An Ultim is truly the project of a lifetime in terms of naval architecture”<\/em>\u2014will be surrounded within AKO by\u00a0Armand de Jacquelot<\/strong>\u00a0(project management and 3D design) and\u00a0Thomas Dalmas<\/strong>\u00a0(appendage design and VPP), the trio being accompanied by\u00a0“our two guest stars,”<\/em>\u00a0Bobby Kleinschmidt<\/strong>\u00a0(Team New Zealand), who will focus on hulls and aero concepts, and\u00a0Gu\u00e9nol\u00e9 Bernard<\/strong>\u00a0(ex-Luna Rossa),\u00a0“an experienced designer highly sought after for the Cup, who will notably handle all the boat’s adjustment systems.”<\/em>\u00a0This design team will likely be completed by\u00a0F\u00e9lix de Navacelle<\/strong>, a regular AKO collaborator, while Antoine Koch adds: “We are also continuing our collaboration on structure with\u00a0GSea Design<\/strong>, but also with\u00a0Finot-Conq<\/strong>\u00a0for CFD calculations;\u00a0David de Pr\u00e9morel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(CEO of Finot-Conq)\u00a0will also personally have a major role in the 3D design with Armand.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A global approach<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The design work truly began in January, notably with\u00a0a return delivery trip of\u00a0Banque Populaire XI<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from Guadeloupe for the architect. In what directions does he plan to go to design this future\u00a0BP 15<\/em>?\u00a0“It’s really a global approach,”\u00a0<\/em>he explains.\u00a0“To address the major issue with these boats, which fail to realize their full potential downwind in heavy seas, we need to achieve\u00a0better integration between the hydro, the platform, and the rig<\/strong>; the goal is for everything to work better together. Traditionally, we only optimized the structure to try to make it as light as possible, and on top of that, we put appendages and a mast. Here, we’re going to\u00a0focus more on the interactions between appendages\/platform and platform\/rig<\/strong>, which should produce significant gains.\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 18\u00a0is a good example of global integration of the boat; that’s likely where it has progressed the most compared to\u00a0<\/em>G17.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The priority for the AKO team today is to work on\u00a0the platform, for which the final plans will be delivered at the end of the year<\/strong>, for a scheduled start of laminating in January 2027 and a build that will last two years at\u00a0CDK<\/strong>, in Lorient.\u00a0“We consulted other shipyards,”\u00a0<\/em>confides Erwan Steff, “we chose CDK for proximity, the autoclave, and our history: we’ve been building our boats with them for years; we have a real ease of dialogue. And since they built\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 18, they clearly see all the stakes of a latest-generation Ultim.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h will take possession of\u00a0BP 15<\/em>\u00a0in the\u00a0spring of 2029<\/strong>\u2014he will then be 52 years old\u2014with notably the 2030 Route du Rhum and the 2032 Ark\u00e9a Ultim Challenge in his sights.\u00a0“When I see Thomas<\/em>\u00a0(Coville)\u00a0who just did a Jules Verne at 57 and is going again for the Rhum, or Charles who won the Arkea at 50, I tell myself that 52 isn’t that old. And you need enormous experience to handle these boats,”<\/em>\u00a0he smiles.<\/p>\n
