{"id":71890,"date":"2026-04-07T07:06:33","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T05:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sailorz.com\/?p=71890"},"modified":"2026-04-03T18:58:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T16:58:18","slug":"audrey-ogereau-i-strongly-believe-in-the-stars-aligning-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sailorz.com\/en\/americas-cup-en\/audrey-ogereau-i-strongly-believe-in-the-stars-aligning-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"Audrey Ogereau :\u00a0&#8220;I strongly believe in the stars aligning  \u2014 or not&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Two weeks after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3cc82n9a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcing<\/a>\u00a0that she was\u00a0<strong>withdrawing from the 2026 Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe<\/strong>\u00a0at the helm of the Ocean Fifty\u00a0<\/em>Koesio<em>,\u00a0<strong>Audrey Ogereau<\/strong>\u00a0has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/4rjazv5h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selected<\/a>\u00a0by K-Challenge for the\u00a0<strong>2027 Women\u2019s America\u2019s Cup<\/strong>. More than enough reasons for\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz<em>\u00a0to sit down with the 33-year-old sailor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s start with your decision to withdraw from the Rhum \u2014 can you explain why?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt wasn\u2019t an easy decision to make. As I said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3cc82n9a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my message<\/a>\u00a0on social media,\u00a0<strong>everything initially fell into place for me<\/strong>\u00a0in 2023 and 2024, with great projects, between the Women\u2019s America\u2019s Cup and the Ocean Fifty Koesio<em>\u00a0\u2014<\/em>\u00a0the kind of programme everyone dreams of, especially for someone like me who didn\u2019t come from offshore racing. Erwan (Le Roux) really took me under his wing,\u00a0<strong>everything was set up to progress<\/strong>\u00a0and reach the start of the 2026 Route du Rhum with solid confidence. Then, little by little, difficulties arose and\u00a0<strong>we weren\u2019t able to tick off key milestones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kind of difficulties?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt started with the\u00a0<strong>2023 Transat Jacques Vabre<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 we retired in La Coru\u00f1a, so I didn\u2019t complete my first transatlantic race. Then in 2024, mainly due to scheduling \u2014 the Cup took up a lot of time \u2014\u00a0<strong>I didn\u2019t race the Route des Terre-Neuvas<\/strong>, so that was another missed offshore opportunity. Moving into 2025, largely due to budget constraints, I couldn\u2019t take part in certain training sessions or weather courses. I also wanted to do the full Figaro season to build my solo experience, but that wasn\u2019t possible, even though I did race the Transat Paprec with Quentin Vlamynck, which was a great experience. And\u00a0<strong>the year ended with the capsize<\/strong>\u00a0during the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or, meaning I once again missed the chance to complete a transatlantic in an Ocean Fifty. With all these setbacks adding up,\u00a0<strong>I started to feel that something wasn\u2019t quite right<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>&#8220;Perseverance is important,<br \/>\nbut it has its limits&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Was the capsize traumatic for you?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo, not really. I wasn\u2019t afraid because we were inside, and we reacted straight away, almost instinctively, following the safety procedures. I think it really hit me when I was winched off the boat and saw it upside down \u2014 but more in a way of: &#8220;<strong>Wow, we\u2019ve just wrecked our 2026 season!<\/strong>&#8221; Very quickly, I told myself: &#8220;Right, it\u2019s like cycling \u2014 when you fall, you have to get back on quickly&#8221;, and I was lucky enough to do the delivery back on\u00a0<em>Le Rire M\u00e9decin<\/em>. Day by day, I regained confidence on what was also a very reliable boat, but just after the Azores, through a bit of bad luck,\u00a0<strong>something fairly minor happened that made me reflect again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong><br \/>\nIn a wave, I was hit in the face by a winch handle and\u00a0<strong>broke both my front teeth<\/strong>. I used the kit to clean the wound and apply a dressing to prevent infection, but during that time I started overthinking a bit, realising that things can still go wrong.\u00a0<strong>I pictured myself making a mistake during the Rhum<\/strong>, being relatively inexperienced \u2014 because the better prepared you are, the better you handle these situations. All of this gradually sank in, and at the start of 2026, I saw that we were still looking for funding to run the season. The refit was running late, we didn\u2019t know how many training days I\u2019d get, bearing in mind I\u2019d never sailed the boat solo, and as time went on, I realised that\u00a0<strong>I couldn\u2019t go into it having done just five or six days of solo sailing<\/strong>. I really believe in things either aligning or not, and there had been a series of signals \u2014 more or less significant \u2014 that ultimately led me to this decision. Perseverance is important, but it has its limits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When did you tell Erwan and Koesio? And how did they react?<\/strong><br \/>\nI made the decision about a month before posting on social media\u00a0<em>(on 20 March)<\/em>. It wasn\u2019t easy to announce, because there\u2019s always\u00a0<strong>that fear of letting people down<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Erwan, the sponsor, the team, everyone around me. Erwan and I are very close, we talk a lot, so\u00a0<strong>I think he almost knew before I did<\/strong>, which is what he told me \u2014 and he completely understood. Throughout the project, he always reassured me so that I wouldn\u2019t feel that pressure, saying that if I didn\u2019t feel ready, even at the last minute, he would find a solution. It was the same with Koesio \u2014 I get on extremely well with Pierric Brenier, the president, and when I told him, he said: &#8220;It\u2019s your call,\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t worry about the image you might project<\/strong>, no one really cares \u2014 it\u2019ll be forgotten quickly and you\u2019ll move on to other projects.&#8221; Honestly, I\u2019m very lucky they were so supportive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will you still be sailing with Koesio?<\/strong><br \/>\nI won\u2019t speak on behalf of Erwan, but there\u2019s a good chance the boat will be back at the end of April for the Mediterranean Grands Prix and targeting the Rhum \u2014 that\u2019s the objective. Personally,\u00a0<strong>I still want to sail on the boat<\/strong>\u00a0both inshore and offshore with a reduced crew \u2014 I feel very comfortable within this team.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>&#8220;I can\u2019t wait to take the helm<br \/>\nagain at 40 knots!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>In the meantime, things seem to be aligning again, as you were selected on Thursday by K-Challenge for the Women\u2019s America\u2019s Cup \u2014 can you tell us how that came about?<\/strong><br \/>\nI responded to the call for applications and was shortlisted for the selection process. There were 18 of us rotating on the simulator, the AC Sailing video game, along with physical, technical and flight knowledge tests, as well as interviews \u2014 it was intense but very interesting. And\u00a0<strong>I found out on Wednesday that I\u2019d been selected<\/strong>. I\u2019m really happy because I loved sailing that boat in 2024, and honestly, I can\u2019t wait to get back at the helm at 40 knots!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ultimately, is this a project that suits you better?<\/strong><br \/>\nLet\u2019s say it\u2019s\u00a0<strong>a project where I already have stronger foundations<\/strong>, because I grew up in inshore racing and close-contact regattas, whereas offshore was completely new to me before 2023. I also love the high-tech aspect, given my background as a mechanical engineer. In 2024, I really enjoyed going back over hydraulic schematics, cylinders, getting hands-on\u2026 That said,\u00a0<strong>it doesn\u2019t mean I won\u2019t return to offshore racing<\/strong>, but likely after 2027, because I hope this project will last as long as possible.
