After a winter marked by round-the-world records, the Ultim fleet is now looking ahead to the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe<\/strong>, which, for the first time in the class\u2019s history, could bring together\u00a0up to eight trimarans<\/strong>. Between the launch of\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 18\u00a0and the announcement of two new builds, the class is experiencing an unprecedented period, despite a reduced 2026 programme following the postponement of the Odyss\u00e9e Ultim.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The 2026 season was shaping up to be promising for the Ultim class, with plans to explore the Mediterranean in the spring and a sold-out Route du Rhum. However, it got off to a difficult start with the announcement, on 19 February, of the\u00a0postponement of the Odyss\u00e9e Ultim<\/a>, a new crewed race initially scheduled from 29 April to 10 May 2026, starting from Antibes.<\/p>\n

“We faced\u00a0both a budget issue and a lack of entries<\/strong>,<\/em>\u00a0explains Patrick Gilliot, General Secretary of CapMed, the event organiser.\u00a0We had been working on an ambitious event requiring significant funding, particularly due to the very high port costs in the Mediterranean.\u00a0We had secured 80% of the budget<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0[which he prefers not to disclose, Ed.],\u00a0but that was not enough to proceed.”\u00a0<\/em>In addition, on the sporting side,\u00a0Gitana 18<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>\u00a0were not ready to take part,\u00a0reducing the fleet to just three boats<\/strong>,\u00a0SVR Lazartigue<\/em>,\u00a0Banque Populaire XI\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Actual Ultim 4<\/em>, an insufficient number given the organisers\u2019 investment, who are now targeting a new window in October 2028.<\/p>\n

For Samuel Tual, head of Actual and President of the Ultim class, this postponement is\u00a0“a major disappointment”<\/em>\u00a0and highlights\u00a0the need to build a solid racing programme<\/strong>, something the class regularly emphasises but has yet to achieve over time.\u00a0“It is essential to have flagship events such as the Route du Rhum, the Arkea Ultim Challenge or the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or, but also complementary races, particularly in the Mediterranean.\u00a0We are working hard to establish a structured four-year calendar<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Three Ultims in the Mediterranean\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The three teams initially entered in the Odyss\u00e9e Ultim will nevertheless head to the Mediterranean over the same period, each maintaining their planned hospitality operations.\u00a0A joint gathering is even scheduled in La Seyne-sur-Mer<\/strong>\u00a0from 6 to 9 May.\u00a0“It will serve both as an exhibition and a shared training session. It will help fill the gap,”<\/em>\u00a0says Yves Le Blevec, director of Team Actual.<\/p>\n

For\u00a0SVR Lazartigue<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Banque Populaire XI<\/em>, the\u00a0“friendly match”<\/em>\u00a0will begin as early as the delivery trip between Brittany and the Mediterranean, which the two teams plan to sail together.\u00a0“We are effectively relaunching a new version of our Ultim<\/strong>, with a new set of foils and new rudders. This delivery alongside a serious competitor will give us an early indication of our performance,”<\/em>\u00a0notes Antoine Gautier, in charge of the SVR Lazartigue project at MerConcept.<\/p>\n

The first event bringing Ultims together in 2026 will be\u00a0the Drheam-Cup in July<\/strong>, with\u00a0SVR Lazartigue<\/em>,\u00a0Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Actual Ultim 4<\/em>\u00a0expected to compete, while\u00a0Banque Populaire XI<\/em>\u00a0will not attend due to summer refit works. In September, a training camp is scheduled at the Finist\u00e8re offshore centre in Port-la-For\u00eat, ahead of the 24H Ultim in Lorient (single-handed), the final rehearsal before the Rhum.<\/p>\n

Eight on the Rhum start line?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Route du Rhum is shaping up to be exceptional for the class.\u00a0Five skippers are, barring unforeseen circumstances, certain to line up<\/strong>: Charles Caudrelier (Gitana 18<\/em>), Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h (Banque Populaire XI<\/em>), Tom Laperche (SVR Lazartigue<\/em>), Thomas Coville (Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>) and Anthony Marchand (Actual Ultim 4<\/em>).\u00a0Three more could join them<\/strong>, including one making his Ultim debut from the Imoca class and close to acquiring\u00a0Actual Ultim 3<\/em>\u00a0(ex\u00a0Macif<\/em>, VPLP design launched in 2015).\u00a0“Things are progressing well, discussions are positive,<\/em>\u00a0says Yves Le Blevec.\u00a0If everything goes as planned,\u00a0the boat should be sailing under her new colours in June<\/strong>.”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Guirec Soud\u00e9e<\/strong>, who recently set a westabout round-the-world record, has also expressed, as soon as he returned to Brest,\u00a0his intention to compete in the Route du Rhum<\/a>\u00a0and later in the Arkea Ultim Challenge.\u00a0But\u00a0he must first secure a new sponsor<\/strong>, as his contract with MACSF ended alongside his circumnavigation.<\/p>\n

What about\u00a0Idec Sport<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Alexia Barrier<\/strong>?\u00a0“The boat was due to be handed over to another skipper, but that is no longer the case,<\/em>\u00a0explains the sailor, who completed the Jules Verne Trophy with her all-female crew at the end of January.\u00a0I would like to be on the start line in Saint-Malo, but I don\u2019t yet know if that will be possible<\/em><\/strong>. CIC, Sopra Steria and Richard Mille continue to support me, and I am waiting for feedback from other partners, particularly Idec. I\u2019m not putting pressure on myself,\u00a0I\u2019ve just come out of a major project,\u00a0if I race the Route du Rhum, great \u2014 if not, it\u2019s not a drama<\/strong>. We should know more in the coming days.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Gitana 18, \u201cthe great unknown\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Whatever happens, the battle for victory looks set to be tight.\u00a0“We are doing everything we can to be part of it,<\/em>\u00a0says Greg Evrard, team manager of Sodebo.\u00a0Hence the upgrades made after the Jules Verne Trophy, including\u00a0a new set of foils and probably a new daggerboard<\/strong>. Our competitors will be operating at a very high level. The big unknown is\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 18. We trust that they have done an excellent job in the design and build phases. The boat has huge potential, but she still needs to be fully exploited. Now,\u00a0their challenge lies in the development timeline<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Antoine Gautier adds:\u00a0“<\/em>Gitana 18\u00a0will be something of a wildcard<\/em><\/strong>. There are so many uncertainties around this boat that it\u2019s difficult to position ourselves against it. As a result, our priority is to make sure we are ahead of\u00a0<\/em>Sodebo,\u00a0<\/em>Actual\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0Banque Populaire.”\u00a0<\/em>When will the first real confrontation with the Verdier design\u2014sailing off Lorient since early March\u2014take place?\u00a0“We are currently\u00a0in a development phase that will take us through to the end of the summer<\/strong>, with our first competitive benchmark being the 24H Ultim,”<\/em>\u00a0the Gitana Team told us, adding that the boat\u2019s foils are expected\u00a0“in the coming weeks”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Antoine Gautier is in any case highly enthusiastic about the level now reached by the class:\u00a0“I\u2019ve been involved in offshore racing and the Ultim class for a long time, and\u00a0I\u2019ve never seen such a level of boat development and team commitment<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0This momentum shows no sign of slowing.\u00a0Banque Populaire has indeed announced the construction of a new Ultim<\/strong>\u00a0(see our article<\/em><\/a>)\u2014could others follow?\u00a0“It naturally attracts attention, but for now nothing has been decided on Sodebo\u2019s side,<\/em>\u00a0replies Greg Evrard.\u00a0There will very likely be an Ultim in Sodebo colours on the start line of the 2030 Route du Rhum.\u00a0The current one or a new build?<\/strong>\u00a0We don\u2019t know yet. It\u2019s not a decision to be taken lightly.”<\/em><\/p>\n

For Antoine Gautier, the outlook is clear:\u00a0“By 2030, we won\u2019t be competitive with the current boat.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>Gitana 18\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0Banque Populaire 19\u00a0mark a step change and usher in a new generation of flying boats. It gives us ideas, but for now,\u00a0<\/em>the absolute priority is to renew our partnership\u00a0<\/em>[which expires at the end of 2026, Ed.]\u00a0so that Tom Laperche can line up for the Arkea Ultim Challenge<\/em>\u00a02028.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Argo<\/em>, it\u2019s on!<\/span><\/h2>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0another trimaran has just been announced, for American owner Jason Carroll<\/strong>, who has been sailing for years on\u00a0the MOD70\u00a0Argo<\/em><\/a>. It will be a VPLP design, built by Multiplast, which received the green light on Tuesday evening.\u00a0“The aim is to launch the construction phase by the end of the year; it should last around two years, leading to\u00a0a launch in early 2029<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0project manager Chad Corning told\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>.\u00a0The boat will initially be\u00a0dedicated to crewed record attempts<\/strong>:\u00a0“We have several major targets: the North Atlantic, the 24-hour record and the Route de la D\u00e9couverte,<\/em>\u00a0he continues.\u00a0Then, as the boat matures and proves her reliability,\u00a0we will consider a Jules Verne Trophy attempt<\/strong>, probably two to three years after launch.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Could this VPLP design one day join the Ultim class?\u00a0“That is not the objective at this stage,<\/em>\u00a0replies the project manager.\u00a0She<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will not compete directly against the other Ultims<\/em><\/strong>, except perhaps in certain races such as the Fastnet Race. However, as the trimaran is designed with potential class compliance in mind,\u00a0it remains an option for the future.<\/strong>“<\/em><\/p>\n

For Quentin Lucet, partner naval architect at VPLP,\u00a0“designing from the outset an Ultim-sized boat optimised for crewed records\u00a0opens up exciting design perspectives<\/strong>. This project is also part of what promises to be a rich collaboration between Anglo-Saxon and French cultures. It will allow us to push the development\u00a0<\/em>of the platform<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>and therefore the associated performance,<\/em>\u00a0to a level beyond what we currently see in the Ultim class. It\u2019s a very positive dynamic.”<\/em><\/p>\n
