A crossing of the English Channel in an Optimist at 12, an European 29er title at 16, a debut in the Figaro class at 17<\/strong>\u00a0and a first circuit victory to mark his 18th birthday,\u00a0Tom Goron<\/a>\u00a0is proving to be\u00a0a phenomenon of precocity<\/strong>\u00a0in the world of competitive sailing. Between the Spi Ouest-France, which he won aboard\u00a0<\/em>PRB, and the\u00a0Troph\u00e9e BPGO<\/a>\u00a0he will race again with Nicolas Lunven (start on 18 April),\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0took a closer look at his profile.<\/em><\/p>\n

Are we looking at Tom Goron\u00a0a future Fran\u00e7ois Gabart or Tom Laperche<\/strong>, other examples of early talent who have passed through the Figaro circuit over the past 20 years? The young sailor avoids the comparison, but admits he has been inspired by the former.\u00a0“He\u2019s\u00a0the sailor I\u2019ve always followed<\/strong>, he made me dream when I was a child”<\/em>, he says.<\/p>\n

The comparison doesn\u2019t stop there, since, like the Vend\u00e9e Globe 2012 winner,\u00a0the man who will turn 20 on 10 May\u00a0\u201cgrew up in it\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, to use the words of\u00a0Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire<\/strong>, director of the Finist\u00e8re training centre in Port-la-For\u00eat, which welcomed the prodigy before he was even of age. Between competing from the age of seven in Optimists and family cruises every summer on a Muscadet and the Kelt 29 owned by his father Nicolas, a former match racing specialist, Tom Goron quickly made the sea his playground \u2013 “Fran\u00e7ois Gabart sailed across the Atlantic on a Kelt 39<\/em>“, he jokes, closing the comparison.<\/p>\n

“Tom even started at the age of two<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0We had a large garden with a pond near Dinan, where he sailed an Optimist”<\/em>, says his father, an electro-technical teacher, who never prevented his youngest child (he has an older sister) from pursuing his passion\u2014in fact quite the opposite. Proof?\u00a0“One day at home, he came down from his room and said: \u2018Dad, I saw a video of a girl who crossed the Channel in an Optimist, do you think I could do the same?\u2019<\/em>\u00a0We looked into it and organised the crossing.”<\/em>\u00a0The girl in question was none other than Violette Dorange, another precocious talent \u2013\u00a0“the only one with Tom we\u2019ve welcomed at the centre while still a minor”<\/em>, notes Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire \u2013 who completed the crossing in 2016 at the age of 15. Tom Goron was\u2026 12.<\/p>\n

“Everything he has done,
\nhe decided himself”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Two years later, he independently chose to join a sports-study programme at the Youth La Baule training centre for three years.\u00a0“Everything he has done, he decided himself,”<\/em>\u00a0his father confirms.\u00a0“I remember him at the Saint-Suliac sailing club near Saint-Malo, wondering which class he would choose for his sports-study programme. We visited several centres together during open days, but in the end,\u00a0he chose La Baule, for the 29er and the coaching structure<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

He left three years later with a European title and his high school diploma, and with\u00a0a clear ambition to move offshore<\/strong>\u00a0rather than continue along the Olympic pathway.\u00a0“I asked him why he didn\u2019t continue in Olympic sailing, as he had excelled in the 29er,”<\/em>\u00a0says Nicolas Lunven, who this year brought Goron into his Figaro campaign.\u00a0“His answer was very pragmatic and logical: he felt he didn\u2019t have the physical build for the 49er or other Olympic classes he enjoyed, and above all, he didn\u2019t see himself investing so much time with no guarantee of reaching the Olympics.\u00a0He felt offshore racing would give him more room to express himself<\/strong>. At 17, he showed real clarity\u2014that\u2019s a sign of maturity.”<\/em><\/p>\n

By chance, Navaleo-Les Recycleurs Bretons, who have supported him since 2017 and have already sponsored Figaro sailors (including Simon Tro\u00ebl), agreed to back him on the circuit.\u00a0He then knocked on the door of the Finist\u00e8re training centre<\/strong>. Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire recalls:\u00a0“Thomas Coville was there that day. He told me he had picked up a young guy on a scooter on the road because he thought it was dangerous, and when he asked where he was going, he said: \u2018To the centre.\u2019<\/em>\u00a0That was Tom!”<\/em>\u00a0What convinced the centre to accept him at just 17?\u00a0“His CV, his motivation because he came on his own, and recommendations<\/strong>. A year or two earlier, Matthieu Richard<\/em>\u00a0[former match racer, FFVoile technical advisor, Ed.]\u00a0had called me saying: \u2018I\u2019ve got a young sailor coming into offshore racing\u2014you\u2019ll be hearing about him.\u2019 But after that, it might have gone differently.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Winning the Solitaire as an objective<\/span><\/h2>\n

Yet from his very first season in 2024, Goron stood out.\u00a0“We quickly saw in training that he had full control of the boat,”<\/em>\u00a0confirms the centre director. Although he took\u00a0“a few hits”<\/em>\u00a0in his early races (his own words), the young Breton quickly felt at home on the circuit, particularly in the Solitaire, which he finished 14th (3rd rookie).\u00a0“It\u2019s\u00a0the race where I had the most fun\u2014I discovered myself<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0he says. 2025 marked his breakthrough, with second place in the Solo Guy Cotten, a win in the Solo Ma\u00eetre CoQ\u2014which he celebrated on his 18th birthday\u2014and\u00a07th place in the Solitaire<\/strong>\u00a0(including a second place in the final leg).<\/p>\n

How can such rapid progress be explained?\u00a0“I don\u2019t really have an explanation,”<\/em>\u00a0says his father,\u00a0“other than that in every sport he has tried\u2014cycling, skateboarding\u2014he has always shown huge determination<\/strong>, able to spend hours and hours repeating things and falling countless times until he succeeded.”<\/em>\u00a0Goron himself has his own view:\u00a0“I think I learn quickly and\u00a0I rarely make the same mistake twice. And above all, I\u2019m very well surrounded<\/strong>. When you train every day at the centre with the best sailors like Basile<\/em>\u00a0(Bourgnon), Lo\u00efs<\/em>\u00a0(Berrehar)\u00a0and others, you watch them, you copy a bit, and it helps you progress quickly.”<\/em><\/p>\n

This year, he continues his development alongside Nicolas Lunven.\u00a0“When I was planning the season last winter, I asked several people to suggest names for double-handed sailing.\u00a0His name came up almost every time<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0says the PRB skipper. He adds, after a partnership already validated (2nd in the Troph\u00e9e Laura Vergne, victory in the Spi Ouest-France):\u00a0“I was looking for someone who knows the Figaro 3 well.\u00a0Tom has a dinghy mindset, very focused on sensations<\/strong>, reading the race in the moment, picking up small gains. He\u2019s also very easy to work with\u2014exactly what I needed.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The duo will take on the\u00a0Troph\u00e9e Banque Populaire Grand Ouest<\/strong>\u00a0(800 miles double-handed, start 18 April from Concarneau), before meeting again in May in competition at the Solitaire du Figaro Paprec. In his third participation, can Goron aim for a podium?\u00a0“Last year he didn\u2019t fully deliver because he switched off at the end of the first two legs, but\u00a0I feel he\u2019s extremely well prepared for it<\/strong>, especially sailing with Nico,”<\/em>\u00a0says Jeanne Gr\u00e9goire.\u00a0“The only downside is that he\u2019s still chasing budget.”<\/em>\u00a0The sailor confirms:\u00a0“I still don\u2019t have a sponsor, so\u00a0I may have to start in a very downgraded setup<\/strong>, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ll be able to buy new sails.”<\/em>\u00a0A paradox for a sailor who is widely praised and already looking further ahead:\u00a0“My big dream is to win the Solitaire<\/strong>, then there\u2019s the Vend\u00e9e Globe\u2014I hope it will become a goal, maybe in 2032?”<\/em><\/p>\n
