A new addition to the calendar,\u00a0the Trin\u201940<\/a>, starting from La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer, marked the first solo Class40 race since last July. While Guillaume Pirouelle (<\/em>Sogestran-Seafrigo) dominated proceedings, Corentin Douguet (<\/em>SNSM – Donate, 2nd), Fabien Delahaye (<\/em>Legallais, 3rd) and Axel Tr\u00e9hin (<\/em>Affaire \u00e0 Faire) kept up the pace and the fleet remained extremely tight. Race director Gilles Bricout, skippers Pauline Courtois and Alexis Loison, along with meteorologist Basile Rochut, break down the results.<\/em><\/p>\n

While the Caribbean 600 in February and Spi Ouest-France BPGO in April had already featured Class40s, the Trin\u201940 was the\u00a0true season opener<\/strong>\u00a0for the 40-foot fleet. It was indeed the most competitive line-up of the early season, with thirty boats on the start line in La Trinit\u00e9-sur-Mer for this first edition,\u00a0organised by the class<\/strong>. Above all, many of the favourites for the Route du Rhum\u2013Destination Guadeloupe were present. It marked the first major solo showdown since the previous solo race last summer (the second leg of Les Sables\u2013Horta).<\/p>\n

The course, which ran along the Brittany coastline from Quiberon Bay before a\u00a0round trip into the Bay of Biscay<\/strong>, was shortened before the start from the originally planned 1,200 miles to 700 miles. \u201cThe forecast light airs could have put the fleet at risk, potentially pushing them with the current into the Ouessant traffic separation scheme among commercial shipping<\/em>,\u201d explains race director Gilles Bricout. \u201cDespite the shortened course, they encountered very light conditions early on, followed by significant instability due to a stationary front in the Bay of Biscay<\/em>,\u201d adds Basile Rochut, race meteorologist for Marine Weather Intelligence.\u00a0\u201cThere was minimal pressure, making it\u00a0difficult to pinpoint wind direction and strength<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0For Pauline Courtois, these conditions pushed skippers \u201cto be extremely precise and fully focused on boat performance<\/em>.\u201d \u201cThe unstable wind gave them no respite<\/em>,\u201d adds Alexis Loison.<\/p>\n

Pirouelle,
\n\u201cfast in all conditions<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The intensity was indeed\u00a0relentless<\/strong>\u00a0throughout the four days of racing. \u201cEven Guillaume Pirouelle told me he sometimes hesitated to go and eat so as not to lose 0.5 to 1 knot of speed<\/em>,\u201d smiles Gilles Bricout. Yet the Norman skipper, aboard his Mach 40.5\u00a0Sogestran-Seafrigo<\/em>, took the lead as early as the upwind leg along the Breton coast and held it throughout the Bay of Biscay loop. In terms of strategy, \u201che never made extreme calls, always opting for compromises and small adjustments. In these conditions, that was the right approach<\/em>,\u201d analyses Basile Rochut. \u201cGuillaume remained conservative in his positioning, without engaging in fleet covering, while capitalising on the key wind shifts<\/em>,\u201d continues Alexis Loison. \u201cHe was fast in all conditions and executed excellent transitions that allowed him to extend his lead. He was\u00a0on the right side of every move<\/strong>!<\/em>\u201d admires Pauline Courtois. \u201cHe\u2019s like a metronome, overlooking no detail; at the finish, his shore team was surprised at how clean the boat still was<\/em>,\u201d adds Gilles Bricout. The winner is riding a\u00a0strong wave of momentum<\/strong>, having already claimed victory in the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or with C\u00e9dric Ch\u00e2teau and the Jules Verne Trophy with the\u00a0Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>\u00a0crew.<\/p>\n

However, Guillaume Pirouelle had to contend with\u00a0strong resistance<\/strong>\u00a0from several competitors, including Corentin Douguet (SNSM \u2013 Donate<\/em>, Lift V3), who crossed the line just one hour later. \u201cCorentin confirms his excellent form after a standout 2025 season<\/em>\u00a0[1st in the Fastnet Race, 2nd in the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or],\u201d recalls Alexis Loison. \u201cHe was only slowed at the start after missing an option in the light airs, but otherwise never let go<\/em>,\u201d adds the race director. Behind him, Fabien Delahaye \u201cmanaged to strike the right balance, like Guillaume Pirouelle<\/em>,\u201d notes Basile Rochut. The\u00a0Legallais<\/em>\u00a0skipper (Lift V2) once again demonstrated his solo prowess, having already won Les Sables\u2013Horta (leg 2 and overall).<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can already feel the boats
\nare fully ready<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Alexis Loison was also impressed by Axel Tr\u00e9hin (Affaire \u00e0 Faire<\/em>), who finished 4th despite launching his Lift V3\u2026 on 9 April, just\u00a0fifteen days before the start<\/strong>\u00a0of the Trin\u201940. \u201cWe knew he would be competitive, but to be so close to the podium was remarkable<\/em>,\u201d he notes. Gilles Bricout also highlights the tenacity of Pierre Leboucher. Having raced the Troph\u00e9e BPGO the previous week (14th with Tiphaine Ragueneau), he lined up aboard\u00a0Penfret<\/em>. \u201cRight from the start, Pierre suffered a complete electronic blackout but held on all the way to the finish<\/em>\u00a0(9th),\u201d says Gilles. Pauline Courtois also points to the performance of Th\u00e9a Khelif (Women of Course<\/em>), who finished 19th in her first solo Class40 race.<\/p>\n

The five-time match racing world champion also emphasises that \u201cthe battle was\u00a0intense at every level<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d with \u201cboats in close contact throughout the fleet<\/em>.\u201d There was little major technical damage and only one retirement, that of Vincent Riou (Pierreval \u2013 Fondation GoodPlanet<\/em>, J1 damage). \u201cOverall, you can feel the boats are already ready and that a huge amount of preparation work has been done<\/em>,\u201d notes Alexis Loison. \u201cWe are already into the fine details\u2014minor settings and adjustments\u2014but it\u2019s clear the skippers\u00a0already know their boats extremely well<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d All, of course, have the Route du Rhum\u2013Destination Guadeloupe firmly in their sights.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s impressive is the overall level across the fleet<\/em>,\u201d enthuses Pauline Courtois.\u00a0\u201cThere is great depth, everyone is training hard, and it promises\u00a0a fantastic battle at the Route du Rhum<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d Preparation will continue over the coming weeks. Most competitors still need to complete their qualification, a 1,200-mile solo passage. A large part of the fleet is now expected in Normandy for the CIC Normandy Channel Race (starting 31 May in Caen) and the Drheam Cup (12 July in Cherbourg).<\/p>\n
