Long, mentally draining and intensely tactical, the second stage of the\u00a0Solitaire du Figaro Paprec<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>was won<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by rookie sailor\u00a0Paul Loiseau<\/strong>, just ahead of Nicolas Lunven. After a fierce battle, Alexis Thomas took third place. In the overall standings, Tom Dolan, 5th in Pornichet, retains the lead. Analysis of this\u00a0<\/em>\u201cinfernal stage\u201d\u00a0with three Figaro experts: skippers\u00a0Yoann Richomme<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jules Ducelier<\/strong>, alongside weather router\u00a0Dominic Vittet<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s no exaggeration to say that arrival in Pornichet felt like a relief for the 36 sailors competing in the 2026 Solitaire du Figaro Paprec. After a first stage\u00a0that was relatively straightforward, fast and committed<\/a>, this second leg plunged the fleet into a completely different exercise:\u00a0\u201cOne of the most complex and slowest stages I\u2019ve ever seen!<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Yoann Richomme, an eight-time competitor and two-time winner (2016 and 2019).\u00a0\u201cEven from shore it was exhausting to follow, you felt for them,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0continues the Paprec skipper, who was forced at the last minute to hand over the helm of his Figaro to Martin Le Pape due to rib injury.<\/p>\n

Indeed, this stage from Vigo was all about endurance, with very light winds, thunderstorms and a highly unpredictable overall situation.\u00a0\u201cIt was extremely difficult to define a strategy, nobody really had the solution,\u00a0it\u2019s the kind of stage where nothing is set in advance<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0confirms Dominic Vittet.\u00a0\u201cLow-pressure systems were shifting randomly across the Bay of Biscay.\u00a0We saw an incredible number of leaders<\/strong>, more than ten different names at the front \u2014 that never happens!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In such light conditions, gaps were created less by strategic decisions than by\u00a0the ability to make the most of every micro shift<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cI think it mainly came down to consistency in boat speed and the ability to always be at the front of your group on every small gain, to\u00a0come out ahead at each regrouping<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Normandy sailor Jules Ducelier (two participations, 4th in 2025).<\/p>\n

Yoann Richomme shares the same view:\u00a0\u201cThose at the front at the finish are\u00a0those who sailed the least distance<\/strong>. Staying fast, keeping composure and having the right energy at the right moment sounds simple, but it isn\u2019t!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0In this context, the slightest mistake or hesitation proved costly.\u00a0\u201cMost sailors lost out when they started tacking at 90 degrees,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0notes Vittet.\u00a0\u201cFaced with uncertainty, you had to stay calm and avoid going off on your own.\u00a0There were more ways to get eliminated than strategies to win.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHolding Nico Lunven
\nlike that is impressive!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

In the middle of this tactical chaos, rookie\u00a0Paul Loiseau, 22<\/strong>, stole the spotlight by winning this highly demanding stage. Already 7th in stage one and now 4th overall, the skipper of\u00a0R\u00e9gion Bretagne CMB Espoir<\/em>\u00a0\u201cis one of those talented young sailors capable of big breakthroughs,\u201d says Richomme.\u00a0\u201cHe managed to stay clear-headed right to the end<\/em><\/strong>, it was very, very clean!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Already impressive early in the season with a strong 2nd place in the Troph\u00e9e Laura Vergne, Loiseau is proving he has what it takes to compete at the front consistently, notes Vittet:\u00a0\u201cIn this constant light-air scenario, he managed to maintain enough speed over four days, which is extremely mentally demanding.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Ducelier adds:\u00a0\u201cEven in straight-line sailing, he always managed to come out on top within his group. And above all, he never gave up. In such mentally exhausting conditions, holding\u00a0Nico Lunven<\/strong>\u00a0like that is impressive!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The other standout performer was the PRB skipper, double Solitaire winner (2009 and 2017), who had already animated stage one (5th in Vigo).\u00a0\u201cHis trajectory is extremely precise, straight and surgical<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Ducelier.\u00a0\u201cHis positioning within the group was always perfect. He rests at the right time and stays fully in control.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a joy to watch him in full control,<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Richomme.\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s not the kind to make spectacular moves, but he is always fast. He masters the weather, the stakes, and his boat. For me,\u00a0he is in a strong position ahead of stage three<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Dolan\u2013Lunven,
\na clash of styles<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the overall standings, Irish sailor\u00a0Tom Dolan<\/strong>, 5th in Pornichet, remains leader but now holds just 3 minutes and 38 seconds over the 44-year-old veteran.\u00a0\u201cThe duel will be fascinating,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Vittet.\u00a0\u201cTom also showed strong form, fighting like a lion on this stage.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0I don\u2019t see him giving up under pressure. He can seize opportunities, whereas Nico will be more conservative \u2014 two very different styles.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Alexis Thomas<\/strong>\u00a0(Wings of The Ocean<\/em>) also remains firmly in contention after finishing 3rd on the stage.\u00a0\u201cHis last twelve hours were incredible \u2014 he went from 10th to 3rd,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0notes Richomme. For Vittet, the La Rochelle sailor, now 25 minutes behind Dolan, is a serious contender:\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s fast, makes few mistakes and always comes back.\u00a0He has everything it takes to become a great Solitaire winner<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Ducelier adds:\u00a0\u201cAlexis has always been fast, but now he can maintain that level throughout the race.\u00a0He has clearly taken a mental step up<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In ambush, 1h05 and 1h33 behind the leader respectively,\u00a0Paul Morvan<\/strong>\u00a0(Foricher-French Touch<\/em>) and\u00a0Martin Le Pape<\/strong>\u00a0(Paprec<\/em>), 6th and 7th on the stage, will also have\u00a0\u201ca real card to play\u201d<\/em>\u00a0according to Richomme.\u00a0\u201cThey are both solid and consistent. Martin lost a lot in the final miles of this stage \u2014 it was harsh on him \u2014 but nothing is decided yet.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

A brutal conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n

However, this second stage proved costly for several favourites, including Lo\u00efs Berrehar (Banque Populaire<\/em>), 2nd in stage one and 9th in Pornichet, hampered by the loss of his instruments during thunderstorms.\u00a0\u201cHe is the big loser of the stage,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0says Vittet.\u00a0\u201cI always tell sailors that when you\u2019re not sure where to go, you go slower \u2014 and I think that\u2019s what happened to him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Arno Biston (Article.1<\/em>) and Tom Goron (Xplorassur<\/em>), 17th and 28th respectively, also failed to make an impact. Forced to retire after a grounding at the entrance to the Ria de Muros, Paul Cousin (R\u00e9gion Normandie<\/em>) will also have regrets.\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019ll probably want to perform well in the final stage, which passes close to home,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Ducelier, himself a former R\u00e9gion Normandie skipper.\u00a0\u201cHe may be slightly fresher than the others \u2014 that could be an advantage.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

After such a long and mentally exhausting stage, recovery will be crucial, especially as the start of the final leg between Pornichet and Le Havre has been postponed from Saturday to Sunday. Conditions are also expected to change dramatically.\u00a0\u201cOn Wednesday they\u2019ll face heavy downwind conditions in the Channel \u2014 it\u2019s going to be tough,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0warns Vittet.\u00a0\u201cThis time,\u00a0it will be pure Figaro sailing: breeze, rocks and strong currents<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Ducelier, while Richomme concludes:\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve seen stages like this before that really hurt the fleet. When fatigue builds up, the ability to attack at night becomes decisive.\u00a0We\u2019ll see who still has something left in the tank.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
